SR In Multi-Nationals in Nigeria This is evident in form of philanthropy or Legacy development: purchase of tricycle for the deformed,

purchase of Braille books for the blind, building of palace for kings, building of clinics, award ofscholarships, purchase of generating sets for communities, community construction feeder roads, sponsorship to international intellectual fora like ISO 26000, building skill acquisition centres etc.

The SMEs and NGOs Sensitisation of communities on health matters, environmental awareness activities, provision of basic

employment in rural areas, development of primary productive workforce in Farms, fisheries, papermills, fruit juice production, and drawing of government attention to issues of SR interests by NGOs.

    The Government Angle on SR.

In Nigeria the basic duty of government is done in some cases on philanthropy or SR basis. Butgenerally, in the area of education, the government in Nigeria is making efforts. Again, there is beforethe National Assembly a draft bill on SR to which the National Mirror Committee has madecontributions to avoid making purely SR matter a national law which could impede the spirit of SR andISO 26000.

    The Way Forward/Future Plans

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria and the Consumer Protection Councilwill drive the usage in Nigeria with many NGOs

Since the CSR of many corporations are in tune with the ISO 26000 the useof the standard is not likely to face much challenges.

NMC is planning a regional conference for further enlightenment after theCopenhagen conference.

The government is thinking about legal backing on SR, which requires NMCeffective moderation to avoid wrong use of the document. Already the legal

professionals in NMC are working in this direction and contacts have been

made and discussions going on with the National Assembly.

The Oil Producing Regions in Nigeria are happy with this document and wehope that the communities in those areas may use it for knowing the rightthings to do on ethics of work, environment and relationships for

sustainability of developments in such areas.NMC Nigeria

Constraints Educational Level of the majority of the Nigerian Populace and ability

    to read and write.

Financial level of most Micro firms and SMEs in Nigeria that formmore than 97 % of the population. For now, they are just working

based on survival instincts with little or no development thinking orsustainability ideologies.

Some companies may be exposed to some attacks if they do notconform to the proposals in the ISO 26000 documents in some volatileareas of their operation.

Government giving the ISO 26000 a legal teeth could becounterproductive in free business environment.

The boundary between the ISO 26000 and some other Internationaldocuments could be an issue in the future about the usage.

INTEGRATING SR INTO SMEsUSE CHEAP AND COST EFFECTIVE APPROACH

SMEs are more innovative and flexible due to size. Practical demonstration

of SR could start with very little finances, without complex planning.

DONT WAIT START SOMETHING ON SR TODAY Most SMEs, have direct local contact with communities. Some of the

owners, shareholders and workers are leaders and have influence in the

community. Gauge some need in the community and solve them.

MONITORING AND FOLLOW_UP ACTIONS: The SMEs management process being flexible should always monitor the

impacts of the organisations activities on society and environment and make

actions to control and remedy any negative impacts. (training, Supplychain,)

contacts are made in some cases on daily bases, in community

meetings, parties. Use this method of engagement and internalmanagement process when it is possible.

USAGE OF THE ISO 26000 CORE SUBJECTS Not all the outcome issues from the 7 core subjects may be

addressed immediately by an SME. Concentrate first on areasof greatest significance to sustainable development, put a planforward on how to handle the other identified issues latter. E.g.on environment, plan what aspects to do first.

SEEK ASSISTANCE AND COLLABORATE WITH OTHERS Assistance from government in areas of interest on SR,

collaborate with other SMEs, (ROAD Maintenance). Generalcleaning process (Gutters), handling of Toxic waste. ElectricitySupply to community, School Building and with the standardbody SON for guidance. Act collectively with peers to save

    resources.
