INTRODUCTION

• Brazil has full participation in the ISO 26000 process at the

WG and at national level (MC with more than 250 participants)

• However…

• Awareness of users and general public still low

• Process still involving mainly “standards usual audience” 

• Risks of misuse and/or misinterpretation are relevant

• To address those concerns, an innovative discussion andcooperation process was started in early 2010

• This presentation highlights the main aspects of such initiative

GENERAL OBJECTIVE

To establish a multipartite joint process to maximize

the positive impacts of the imminent publication of ISO 26000 in Brazil, so as to foster the integration of 

the various subjects under the SR umbrella in the

agendas and actions of the affected sectors and

organizations.

To raise awareness about ISO 26000 by using it as a

basis to describe and analyze real life experiences

WHAT HAPPENED SO FAR

• A multistakeholder steering committee is established

• Basic rules for the projects operation were agreed

• A coordination team and supporting staff is at work

• Web platform in final phase of production

• Communication materials are being produced

• Meetings with key organizations of variousstakeholder groups

• Schedule is set for 2010

PROPOSAL TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC - OUTLINE

• Open process to identify, record, document and share SR relatedexperiences through a web platform

• Experiences reported based on ISO 26000

• Submissions by multistakeholder groups

• Training activities for stakeholder groups less familiar to SR/ISO 26000

• Motivation factors

• desire to share knowledge

• visibility and recognition to experiences

• Ten experiences selected will be presented at a seminar and in a

printed publication

• All inputs will remain available on line for consultation and debate

• Multistakeholder steering committee cooperates with the NSB

• First edition will run from June to December 2010

Specific objectives

a) To raise awareness among Brazilian civil society

organizations regarding ISO 26000b) To provide an open platform for discussion of experiences

related to SR (positive and negative)

c) Avoid misuse and misinterpretation of ISO 26000

d) To develop the ability to improve the contribution of 

organizations to sustainable development, strengthen

democratic participation, fight poverty, inequality, and

corruption.

e) To leverage civil society organizations agendas, by

connecting them to SR framework

f) To contribute to similar initiative at global level (currently

being prepared by NGOs)

Criteria connecting experiences to ISO 26000

Examples of criteria proposed to structure experiences submitted

Participation of Society: active and autonomous participation of organizations of the six stakeholder groups

Connection to a Sustainable Development and Social Justice

agenda: related to at least one out of the 36 “SR issues” 

Respect for principles: experiences related to the SR principles

according to ISO 26000

Participatory and transparent practices: experiences shall

promote/observe participatory practices and dialogue

Critical evaluation: experiences submitted shall also discuss positive

and negative aspects
