More than one hundred area children will head outside in the cold winter with newouterwear this year, thanks to the generosity of employees at Nicor Services, NicorAdvanced Energy and IBT Solutions.
Partnering with the Urban Youth Ministry division of Wayside Cross Ministries ofAurora, the three affiliates of Nicor Inc. offered theiremployees the opportunity to purchase a coat for needychildren. The project was coordinated by Penny Falcónof Aurora.
This is the fourth year that the three Nicor affiliateshave participated in the “Coats for Kids” project. Inaddition, the proceeds of a holiday food drive orga-nized by the companies will benefit the Wauconda-Is-land Lake Food Pantry, Worth Township Hall in Alsip,the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry, and the NorthernIllinois Food Bank in St. Charles.
Wayside Cross Ministries will work with a networkof churches and social service agencies to distributethe coats to needy families in the Greater Kane Countyand parts of DuPage and Kendall counties.
Wayside Cross provides shelter and rehabilitativeservices for men, single women, single-parent familiesand at-risk children. Its primary goal is to assist peoplein changing their lives through enrollment in long-termrehabilitation programs.
The Urban Youth Ministry division collaborates witharea churches and businesses to coordinate after-schoolprograms, offer a teen mentoring program, and provide a baseball league. It also reachesout to refugee youth through World Relief.
Nicor Services offers a variety of maintenance and repair warranties to protect resi-dential and commercial customers across the United States. CHICAGO – Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich was arrested Dec. 9 on charges he brazenlyconspired to sell or trade President-elect Barack Obama’s vacant Senate seat to the highestbidder as part of what federal prosecutors called a “political corruption crime spree.”
U.S. Attorney’s office spokesman Randall Samborn said both Blagojevich and his chief ofstaff, John Harris, were taken into custody. Afterwards, a federal judge ordered the gover-nor released on a signature bond.
Prosecutors did not accuse Obama himself of any wrongdoing.Blagojevich also was charged with illegally threatening to withhold state assistance to
Tribune Co., the owner of the Chicago Tribune, in an attempt to strong-arm the newspaperinto firing editorial writers who had criticized him.
The 51-year-old Democrat was also accused of engaging in pay-to-play politics – that is,doling out jobs, contracts and appointments in return for campaign contributions.
“We were in the middle of a corruption crime spree, and we wanted to stop it,” U.S.Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald said, calling the charges against Blagojevich “a truly new low.”He added: “The conduct would make Lincoln roll over in his grave.”
The scandal leaves the Senate seat in limbo. In Washington, Democratic Sen. Dick Durbinof Illinois said the state should hold a special election to fill the seat instead of lettingBlagojevich pick someone. “No appointment by this governor, under these circumstances,could produce a credible replacement,” Durbin said.

AURORA – For several months now,people who walk in the downtown area
have been warned that they can be finedif they cross the street when the light
says ‘don’t walk’, or in the middle ofthe block, instead of at the corner.
This issue was brought up againlast week, when a Waubonsee Com-
munity College student was stoppedfor crossing the street when he wasn’t
supposed to.Different versions circulated about the
incident, including that the student hadto pay $75 on the spot and didn’t get areceipt from the officer. It turns out that a
language barrier had contributed to the confusion and the studentwas let go with a warning. The officer didn’t speak Spanish, thestudent in question didn’t understand much English and a by-stander volunteered to interpret for the officer.
Waubonsee officials followed up with the police department toclear up the incident with officer Ron Hinterlong, who is in chargeof the downtown police beat and has the following words of ad-vice: “Without a doubt, never give an officer money without sign-ing or getting a ticket.”
Rules of the road for pedestrians– When you are crossing at an intersection, wait for the “walk”
sign. If the “don’t walk” signal is blinking is fine to start crossingthe street. Don’t start crossing if the “don’t cross” signal is solid.
– Cross only at the crosswalks and from corner to corner.If you don’t obey these rules, you can be stopped by a police
officer for two offenses, improper walking on roadway or disobey-ing a pedestrian traffic control device.
Usually first time offenders walk away with a warning, but offic-ers have the authority to issue a fine any time a violation is wit-nessed. Fines are generally $75 and you get a ticket. When a ticketis issued there is a bond that has to be paid. A drivers license canbe used as bond up to $200. Infractors can also pay $75 in lieu ofbond to the officer and that amount is written on the ticket. Thisbond will be applied towards the fine once the infractor goes tocourt to clear the ticket.
If person being fined doesn’t have the money on hand or isunable to produce a driver’s license in lieu of bond, they need toprovide a proof of identity (State ID, legit Mexican Consular IDs areaccepted) and sign the ticket stating they will take care of the fine.If this requirement is not fulfilled, the officer will take the person tothe city jail for fingerprints and mug shot, at which time the infrac-tor can post bond.

AURORA– Por varios meses las personas que caminan con frecuencia por elcentro de la ciudad han escuchado advertencias de que pueden ser multados siatraviesan la calle cuando el letrero de advertencia del semáforo dice ‘no camine’,o si lo hace en medio de la cuadra en vez de hacerlo en la esquina.
Este tema salió a relucir la semana pasada, cuando un estudiante del ColegioComunitario Waubonsee fue detenido por cruzar la calle cuando no debía hacerlo.
Se esparcieron diferentes versiones de este incidente, incluyendo que elestudiante había tenido que pagar 75 dólares en ese momento y que no habíarecibido ningún comprobante del oficial de policía. Lo que en realidad sucedióes que el estudiante pudo continuar su camino después de haber recibido unaadvertencia del oficial, pero la barrera del idioma complicó un poco las cosas. Eloficial no hablaba español, el estudiante entendía poco inglés y un peatón seofreció a servir de intérprete entre el policía y el estudiante.
Oficiales de seguridad de Waubonsee contactaron al Departamento de Policíade Aurora y hablaron con el oficial Ron Hinterlong, quien está a cargo del área delcentro y quien tiene el siguiente consejo: ‘Sin lugar a dudas, nunca den dinero aun oficial de policía sin obtener a cambio un comprobante o una multa’.

The four assailants were stillbeing sought.
Before they were attacked, thebrothers had attended a churchparty, and later stopped at a bar.
The district attorney, electedofficials and members of the His-panic and gay communitieshave expressed outrage over theattack.

AURORA – A report by aWaubonsee Valley High School studentabout two other students carrying what was thought to be a hand gunturned out to be a false alarm.
At approximately 7:30 a.m. Dec. 10, a student notified school offi-cials that he had seen two unkown students in possesssion of what hethought was a hand gun.
School officials notified the Aurora Police Department who, with theassistance of units from other jurisdictions, sealed off the campus andbegan a methodical search of the school, located on the far east sideof the city. After several hours, two 15 year-old sophomore studentswere identified as having been in possession of the item, which turnedout to be a BB gun.
The item was confiscated, and the two students were taken to theDepartment for further questioning. They were charged with disor-derly conduct, a misdemeanor. There is no indication that there wasever any intent to cause injury or property damage. After the emer-gency procedures were lifted by the school, students were allowed tobe released to their parents, or remain at school.

Big win for Pacquiao,bigger loss forDe La Hoya

LAS VEGAS – For Manny Pacquiao there was a call from his presidentand the overwhelming gratitude of a country that finally has somethingto celebrate.
For Oscar De La Hoya there was a trip to the hospital and the grimreality that all fighters must eventually face.
One fighter is on the verge of becoming boxing's next superstar. Theother will have to be content with the fact that his bank account is fateven if his reputation is permanently soiled.
Pacquiao likely will go on to even greater things, with big fights andeven bigger money still to come. Assuming he has any brain cells leftafter the beating he took Saturday night, De La Hoya will go on to a lifeas a businessman and forget any thoughts of returning to the ring.
“His close friends and family should tell him it's over,” trainer FreddieRoach said. “I don't want him to end up with some disease like Parkinson's.He's very clear minded right now, but that could change.”
Fighters seldom listen to such talk. They always think they have onefight left in them, and they almost always fight one fight too many.
Unfortunately, those final fights can be costly to their health, as Roachknows only too well.
Roach trained De La Hoya for his loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr., wherehe saw for the first time that De La Hoya couldn't throw punches whenhe spotted an opening. In the opposite corner this time, he watched hisfighter give De La Hoya such a beating that he quit after eight rounds ofgetting punched in the face.
More significantly, Roach has Parkinson's himself.“I hope Oscar has enough sense to call it a day,” he said. “I know he
doesn't want to go out like this but if he doesn't go out, he might go outreally, really hurt.”
De La Hoya was noncommittal in the ring right after the fight, sayinghe wanted to continue fighting but is worried that the reflexes may not bethere anymore.
“My heart still wants to fight, that's for sure,” De La Hoya said. “Butwhen your physical doesn't respond, what can you do? I have to besmart and make sure I think about my future plans.”

Volverá Navaira al quirófanoEl cantante de música texana Emilio Navaira se recupera de la

Arambula confirms baby’sarrival by year’s end
Aracely Arambula confirmed rumors that her baby will be born inlate December or early January, and that she is excited by the arrival ofthe new family member, but that she doesn’t know her baby’s sex yet.

Navaira to have surgery againTejano music singer Emilio Navaira is recovering from surgery he
had Dec. 5, after a skull bone became infected. He is scheduled to goback for more surgery in a month.
Even though the Latin Grammy winner seemed to be in the path torecovery, he went back to the hospital after his face became swollenand his reflexes were slow.
While the singer was already able to play the guitar and run, aninfection in his skull sent him back to the hospital, where the infectedpart was removed.
Once Navaira recovers from this surgery, he will undergo a newprocedure to implant a protesis. Navaira has been surrounded by hisfamily and was transferred from San Antonio, where he lives, to Hous-ton to receive medical treatment.
