MILAGRO SEMANAL Esta semana señala el comienzo de una especie de “desvío litúrgico”. Hemos estado escuchando el Evangelio según san Marcos durante este año litúrgico (Ciclo B). Hoy comenzamos a escuchar una larga sección del Evangelio según san Juan que empieza con el milagro de la multipli-cación de los panes y peces. Este milagro es un preludio de las declaraciones del Señor, que comenzaremos a escuchar en algunas semanas, en las que Jesús se llama a sí mismo el “Pan de Vida”. Cada semana somos testigos de un milagro en la Misa. No vemos la multiplicación de panes. Lo que vemos con los ojos de la fe es el milagro de la transforma-ción de elementos comunes, pan y vino, en el Cuerpo y la Sangre del Señor. Una vez que hemos recibido al Señor, comienza la multiplicación, porque en la Eucaristía se nos fortalece para multiplicar nuestros esfuerzos por alimentar a los pobres, darles refugio a los que no tienen hogar y brin-darles consuelo a los afligidos.

WEEKLY MIRACLE

This week marks the beginning of a kind of “liturgical detour.” We have been listening to Saint Mark’s Gospel during this liturgical year (Year B). Today we begin to hear a long section from John’s Gospel, starting with the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. This miracle story is a prelude to the Lord’s statements that we will be-gin hearing in a few weeks, in which Jesus refers to himself as the “bread of life.” Each week we witness a miracle at Mass. We do not see a multiplication of loaves before us. What our eyes of faith allow us to see is the miracle of the transformation of common elements—bread and wine—into the Lord’s Body and Blood. Once we have received the Lord, the multiplication begins, for in the Eucharist we are strengthened to multiply our efforts to feed the poor, shelter the homeless, and bring comfort to the despairing.

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — When they had eaten, there was some left over, as the LORD had said (2 Kings 4:42-44). Psalm — The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs (Psalm 145). Second Reading — Strive to preserve the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace (Ephesians 4:1-6). TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE El día 2 de agosto es la fiesta de Santa María de los Ángeles, patrona de Costa Rica y de los franciscanos. En 1635 la mestiza Juana Pereira descubrió una pequeña imagen de María con el Niño Dios. Varias veces la ima-gen se le perdió y regresaba al sitio donde la había encon-trado el día 2 de agosto. Por esta razón el lugar a donde regresaba se convirtió en su santuario y se le dio el título de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles en honor de la capilla dedicada a Santa María de los Ángeles afuera del pueblito de Asís en Italia. Esta capillita reconocida como la Porciúncula (pedacito de tierra) fue restaurada por san Francisco. Allí nació la familia franciscana y Francisco insistió que los frailes nunca abandonaran ese lugar porque era consagra-do a Dios. Allí María y los ángeles alababan a Dios cuan-do los seres humanos habían dejado de hacerlo. Según parece, la imagen costarricense también insis-tió en quedarse en un pedacito de tierra consagrado a Dios donde sus hijos e hijas pueden recurrir a ella y adorar al Dios eterno.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Last Wednesday, the greatest pilgrimage in our tradi-tion ended with the feast of Saint James at his shrine in Compostela, Spain. Every year, as many as a hundred thousand persons walk a portion of the medieval way of the pilgrim, earning the right to wear the scallop shell symbol of this journey of faith. In legend, this city on the northern coast of Spain is the final resting place of the apostle, and the full name of the cathedral is “Saint James of the Field of Stars.” There is a tradition that Saint James the Great preached there. In the Roman Catholic tradition, the pilgrimage, like any procession, is a symbol, life’s journey distilled, a pow-erful sign of our journey toward a certain goal. The perils of the road, the support of companions, the contemplative slower pace of life, have the potential to transform and re-new the pilgrims in ways that last a lifetime. Along the way, the distinctions between rich and poor fall away, and everyone shares humble rustic food and stops for the night in hostels or under the stars. After a long walk, the experi-ence of entering through the great doors into the vast cathe-dral filled with incense, light, and song is a foretaste of heaven. The pilgrims often say that their whole lives are redirected toward that moment of entry into the heavenly Jerusalem. The most memorable feature of the cathedral is called the botofumeiro, an incense burner on pulleys and chains that sweeps through the cathedral in immense cir-cles, swirling clouds of sweet-smelling incense around the vast nave.

children to learn more about the Mass and to assist the priest and deacon help the faithful in the pews become more

PASTOR’S DESK—ESCRITORIO DEL PASTOR

Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

It’s no coincidence that the first reading shows the prophet Elisha feeding a crowd of people like Jesus in the gospel. If you want to compare miracles, Elisha did his first, but Jesus did it better. Elisha had a hundred people to feed with twenty barley loaves and a handful of fresh grain. Jesus had five thousand people and only five loaves and a couple fish. So was Jesus trying to show up Elisha?

Neither Jesus nor Elisha ever did a miracle for their own benefit. The very next story in 2 Kings about Elisha is the one where he cured Naaman, the king’s servant, of leprosy. (2 Kgs 5:1:19) When Naaman realized he was cured, he came back to Elisha and offered him a gift in thanksgiving. Elisha refused the gift, because it would imply that Elisha did the miracle, while the prophet knew that God had cured him. Jesus also refused to benefit from feeding the crowds. They came to take him away and make him king, but he went up to his place of prayer on the mountain.

Jesus’ miracle of feeding the five thousand was not done just for the crowd. He was using it to teach the disciples some-thing important. He knew there would be times when they felt they were not holy enough or good enough preachers, to spread the gospel over the world. So he showed them what God can do with our meager abilities.

There are millions of people hungry for the good news that Jesus brings to the world. Remember the miracle of the loaves when you only have a few dollars to give to the mis-sions, when you’re not sure you know enough to teach someone about Jesus, when you don’t know how to invite someone to come back to church. And remember that you do those things, not to make you look holy, but to let God show his loving power.

Decimoséptimo domingo del tiempo ordinario

No es coincidencia que la primera lectura muestra al profeta Eliseo alimentando a una multitud de personas como Jesús en el evangelio. Si quiere comparar milagros, Eliseo hizo lo primero, pero Jesús lo hizo mejor. Eliseo tenía cien personas para alimentar con veinte panes de cebada y un puñado de grano fresco. Jesús tenía cinco mil personas y solo cinco panes y un par de peces. Entonces, ¿estaba Jesús tratando de aparecer a Eliseo? Ni Jesús ni Eliseo alguna vez hicieron un milagro para su propio beneficio. La siguiente historia en 2 Reyes acerca de Eliseo es la que sanó a Naamán, el siervo del rey, de la lepra. (2 Reyes 5: 1: 19) Cuando Naamán se dio cuenta de que es-taba curado, regresó con Eliseo y le ofreció un regalo en acción de gracias. Eliseo rechazó el regalo, porque implicar-ía que Eliseo hizo el milagro, mientras que el profeta sabía que Dios lo había curado. Jesús también se negó a benefi-ciarse de alimentar a la multitud. Vinieron para llevárselo y hacerle rey, pero él fue a su lugar de oración en la montaña. El milagro de Jesús de alimentar a los cinco mil no se hizo solo para la multitud. Lo estaba usando para enseñar a los discípulos algo importante. Sabía que habría momentos en que sentirían que no eran lo suficientemente sagrados o pre-dicadores lo suficientemente buenos como para difundir el evangelio por el mundo. Entonces él les mostró lo que Dios puede hacer con nuestras escasas habilidades. Hay millones de personas hambrientas de las buenas nuevas que Jesús trae al mundo. Recuerde el milagro de los panes cuando solo tiene unos pocos dólares para donar a las misio-nes, cuando no está seguro de saber lo suficiente como para enseñarle a alguien acerca de Jesús, cuando no sabe cómo invitar a alguien a regresar a la iglesia. Y recuerda que haces esas cosas, no para hacerte parecer santo, sino para dejar que Dios muestre su amoroso poder.
