CIO East Africa has produced a wide range of events designed to create an ongoing dialogue about the executive use of information and communication technology in modern day businesses, the latest trends and key issues, and the changing economic, social, and regulatory environments affecting both the sale and use of ICT.

In organizing our CIO100 Symposium and Awards event, we notably noticed that there was low participation by women in the industry and even those that we found, felt challenged in coming out to be given a speaking platform.

Across all industries globally just 22% of senior roles are held by women, compared with 19% in 2004. Almost a third of businesses have no women in their senior leadership teams, although this number has fallen by 6% over the past three years.

The tech sector is where the facts are alarming: just 17% of Google’s workforce are women and the story is no better at younger start-ups such as Airbnb where it’s 13% or Pinterest at 14% or even Dropbox where it shrinks to just 6.3% of the population.

Why is this case? Do men and women have equal opportunities at the workplace? Why do we find more men in leading positions than women? Why is it harder to find women taking up senior roles in the ICT sector?

These are the insights we are seeking, identify the issues and explore possible interventions that will bring change to this imbalance.

Shetech is an educational initiative aimed at highlighting equal op-

portunity challenges and trends at the workplace with a bias on

Women in IT leadership. The event will celebrate the women in

Tech, at the same time encouraging and inspiring young women to

join the industry. This event is to also showcase successful women

in tech. A panel of inspiring women in technology will share their

experiences and insights.
