HIGH SPEED RAILS
Rails are steel products that must fulfil a multitude oftechnological requirements. High-speed railways, withspeeds over 350 km/h, are one of the most demandingapplications, a market segment only accessible to thosecompanies equipped with the most advanced resources.
The following six features summarise the objetives thathigh speed rails must meet:
- Safety
- Comfort
- Durability and cost efficiency
- Minimum acoustic impact
- Service
- Environmentally-friendly
In ArcelorMittal each of these aspects is given carefulconsideration, from the design stage of the manufacturingand control processes. In order to achieve theseobjectives, the production process of high speed rails isdesigned to satisfy the following requirements:
- Fracture mechanics
- Chemical, mechanical and structural homogeneity

CARRIL DE CARGAS PESADAS
1. CARRIL MICROALEADOPROPIEDADES TECNOLОGICAS

HEAVY HAUL RAILS
1. MICROALLOYED RAILSTECHNOLOGICAL PROPERTIES
The poor performance results of carbon-manganese steelrails at the points in rail tracks characterised by extremelyharsh service conditions –low radius curves, axle loads ofover 30 tonnes, etc.– have led to the development ofnew rails with improved mechanical properties.
Traditionally, alloyed steels, with Brinell hardness values ofover 320 HBW and a tensile strength of around 1,100 MPa,were used for this purpose. These properties were achievedby using high levels of manganese, chromium andmolybdenum, alloys that reduce the pearlite interlamellarspacing.
Although reasonably suitable for severe service conditions, the ralis manufactured with these higher-cost steelsusually have high residual stresses and present some riskof containing brittle bainitic and martensitic structures, whose wear resistance is lower than that of pearlite.Furthermore, the welds in these rails show a markedtendency to suffer the “quenching effect”, which producesthe same brittle and low wear resistance microstructures.
ArcelorMittal has developed a fully pearlitic microalloyedsteel rail, manufactured in the as-rolled condition, withmechanical properties –tensile strength, yield strength, hardness, wear resistance and fatigue resistance–
considerably better than those of the carbon-manganesesteel rails. Its hardness value, over 320 HBW (typically335 HBW), is not obtained through the intensive use ofalloying elements, but by the use of small quantities ofmicroalloys (niobium and vanadium) and a low chromiumcontent (0.300% maximum).
The levels of carbon, manganese and chromium in thissteel guarantee a very fine pearlitic microstructure, without any dangerous brittle structures in the rail or itswelds.
The use of niobium and vanadium leads to an improvementin the mechanical properties through grain size refining andprecipitation. The way these properties are obtained isclearly more advantageous and safer compared to theconventional alloy route, in which the high contents ofsilicon, manganese, chromium and molybdenum increasethe risk of dangerous brittle bainitic and martensiticstructures forming in the rail –particularly in the welds.
Thanks to these properties, microalloyed steel rails can bean excellent choice for severe traffic conditions. Withequivalent properties but lower costs for the railwaycompanies, they constitute a very attractive alternative tohead-hardened rails for heavy transport.

2. CABEZA ENDURECIDA

2. HEAD HARDENED RAILS
ArcelorMittal is the only producer in North America(Steelton) and after 3rd Quarter 2011 in Europa (Gijón),that has integrated in the rolling mill a head hardeningsystem (HH), based on controlled cooling by water jets.More than one million tonnes of top-quality head-hardened rails have already been produced using thisadvanced technology.
Constructed originally in 1994, the present rail head-hardening system is a result of technological evolution. This cooling method, based on a meticulous design thathas been verified mathematically and subjected toindustrial tests in real production conditions, is anefficiency-proven application and is a clear example of thequality that ArcelorMittal brings to the steel industry.
There are some differences between the present systemand its predecessors, both as regards its dimensions andthe operating and control philosophy. This system usescontrolled water jets to dissipate the heat in the steel insuccessive stages in order to obtain a fully pearliticstructure, perfectly suited to the metallurgical propertiesof the rail. The entry and exit temperatures determine theoptimum range to ensure a fully pearlitic structure overthe entire length of the rail.
Moreover, the latent heat generated during rollingallows reducing the energy consumed in the process. As
it is integrated in the production line, the rail head-hardening system involves minimum handlingrequirements. It also brings about greater flexibility forfuture modifications to the production process, such asthe production of longer rails.
ArcelorMittal has based on the experience producing1.500.000 tons of HH rails in Steelton to design thenew HH line in Gijón, for rails up to 72 metres in anystandard (Euronorm, Arema, UIC, ect.).
To sum up, the investment made by ArcelorMittal in thishead-hardening process based on water-jet cooling anddesigned to optimise the properties of the rails, hasresulted in an overall improvement in productperformance, allowing the company to respond to thepresent and future challenges of the railway industry. The ability to efficiently obtain a deep hardened layer ineach rail produced is a crucial factor when consideringpossible future increases in axle loads and in the tonnestransported on railway infrastructures, as it allowshardness values of over 380 on the Brinell scale to beachieved. Whether the rails are used for passenger orgoods transport, safety is at all times ArcelorMittal’s toppriority, in addition to the manufacture of products ofthe highest quality with the longest possible service life.
13
MEDIO AMBIENTE

ENVIRONMENT
In the manufacturing process:
Approximately 25% of the steel used for rail productioncomes from recycled steel scrap, which leads to aconsiderable reduction in the consumption of rawmaterials and energy.
Since 2002, a certified Environmental ManagementSystem as per ISO 14001 has been implemented in theproduction process.
In line with a production waste management optimisiationpolicy, which has become a key issue, selective collectionof waste products allows recycling those which can befurther exploited.
During the life of the rail:
A double-track railway line can transport the same numberof passengers per hour as a six-lane motorway, but with aconsiderably lower environmental impact.
The use of rail transport results in a substantial reductionin fossil fuel consumption compared to other means oftransport, such as road transport. The associated CO2emissions are much lower and consequently, so is thegreenhouse effect.
At the end of the rail lifecycle:
When their lifecycle has finished, the rails are again fullyrecycled as scrap without affecting any of their propertiesand returned to their origin as they are integrated in theproduction stage, thus reducing the consumption ofnatural resources.

This market is expanding rapidly throughout the world, dueto urban growth and the saturation that it originates, inorder to provide transport services for the populationliving in the outskirts and peripheral towns.
Urban systems have a high service frequency and face adifficult topography, with sharp curves and steepgradients, as well as short braking and accelerationdistances.
ArcelorMittal supplies rails for underground systems andintercity railways of cities such as Madrid, Barcelona,Bilbao, Seville, Paris, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro,Fortaleza, Brasilia, Caracas, Medellin, etc.
RAIL MARKET
17
18
HEAVY HAUL LINES
These lines carry great quantities of ores, containers andother products. The traffic is usually characterised bytrains with a high number of wagons and high load peraxle.
Rails with high wear resistance and high fatigue failureresistance are required for these tracks. They are made ofvery hard and very clean microalloyed steels or are headhardened.
TRADITIONAL MIXED-TRAFFIC SYSTEMS
The operation of these systems involves a great variety oftraffic conditions, different topographies and climates, frequently, in one-way routes and in a wide variety ofdensities.
LIGHT RAILWAY LINES
They are usually installed as temporary lines and designed forreallocation depending on the service requirements.
SWITCHES AND CROSSOVERS
ArcelorMittal has joined the group of world-classmanufacturers of rails for switches through theproduction of switch bars of up to 90 m from specialasymmetric rails.
