I I I NTRO DUC TI ON NTRO DUC TI O N NTRO DUC TI ON NTRO DUC TI O N NTRO DUC TI O N The Pierina Au-Ag deposit (Fig.1) is in the Cordillera Negra of nor th-central Perú at latitude 9°26 .5’S, l ongitude 7 7°35 ’W . Pieri na is a high-sulfidation (acid-sulfate) epithermal deposit hosted by pyroclastic volcanics of the Tertiary Cal ipuy Grou p. In December 19 96 , proven and probable reserves at Pierina were 67.7 Mt grad ing 2.98 g/t Au and 22 g/t Ag, giving a total of 201,900 kg Au and 1,490 tonnes Ag (6.49 and 47.9 million oz, respectively). R R R R R EG I O NAL EG I O NAL EGI O NAL EGIO NAL EGIO NAL  G G EO LOG I C EO LOG I C EOLOG I C EO LOG I C EO LOG I C  S S S ET TING ET TING ET TING ET TING ET TING The Cordillera Negra consists of a thick sequence of Jurassic to Cretaceous marls, shales, limestones, and continental clastic rocks unconformably overlain by andesites, dacites, and rhyodacites of the late Eocene to lower Miocene Calipuy Group (52.5 – 14.6 Ma; Wilson et al  .199 5) . The Cordill era Blanca is the late Ter tiary (16 .0 – 2.7 Ma ) gran odiorite batholith that i ntru ded late Cretaceous sediments and is flanked by Miocene ignimbrites. The main structural episodes in the region have been Early – to Mid-T ertiary com pression, foldi ng, and overthr usting of the Mesozo ic strata, followed by an extensional period associated with the extrusion of the Cal ipuy volcanics, emplacement of the Cordillera Blanca batholit, and formation of the Cal lej on d e Huaylas graben (Rio Santa valley). The Pliocene-Pleistocene orogenic uplift of the Andean zone was the last structural episode. Main structural trends are NW (Rio S anta grabe n and gen eral accretionary structures associated with subd uction processes), and NE and EW second ary crossfaults. The Cordillera Negra hosts structurally controlled, Pb, Zn, Cu, Ag, and Au minera li zation, ma inly in the Calipuy volcanics. The p rin- cipal producers in the Cordill era Negra were the Alianza (Pb-Zn- Ag) and Santo Toribio (Pb-Zn-Ag) mines. A 70- km-long belt of hydro therm al alteration is associated with the dep osits and directly correlates with the NW-trending Rio Santa grabe n and asso ciated bounding faults. Intersecting NE-and EW-trending structures, along with ci rcular features possibily related to e rup tive centers, localize mineralization in vein and replacemen t depo sits. Along the western flank of the Cordillera Blanca, Pb-Zn- Ag is predo minant and is largely contro ll ed by the deep seated, NW-trending contact between the gran odiorite batholith and sedimentary rocks. The contact is at l east in part a m ountain-fro nt fault. Curr ent Au pro duction from de Cordill era Blanca is related to the aforemen tioned high-angle structural conta ct at the Nu eva California mine. The Pierina Au de posit is anomalous in th e area in that it has a typical hi gh-su lfi dation epitherm al character, a deposit type wich was previously unreco gnized in the region.
