Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
"In today’s Gospel Reading from St. Matthew, a lawyer among the Pharisees again tries to entrap Jesus by asking Him the question, “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the great-est.” Jesus’ response appears multiple times in Holy Scripture, as He says, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.” The Lord then adds another that He cites as almost equally important, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Much has been written and conjectured about both of these, and often the focus is on who our neighbor is. However, there is another element of the second Great Commandment that is worthy of note, and that is loving the neighbor “as yourself.” Too often people conclude that this means that you have to love yourself first. Most of us grasp what it means to the love the Lord with all we are, although it is nearly unattainable to accomplish. However, that second Great Commandment does not mean that it is necessary for us to love ourselves before we can love anyone else. It means, quite simply, that most of us are concerned with our own interests and our own personal situations. Jesus is telling us that just as we often think of ourselves, we need to take care and have concern for the interests of others as well. In the familiar Prayer of St. Francis known to many Catholics, we sum up what this kind of love to which we are called really is, when we pray, “Lord, grant that I might not so much seek to be loved, as to love.”

ALL SOULS DAY NOVENA CARDS – Your intentions may be included in a special All Souls Day Novena of Masses. Nine consecutive Masses will be celebrated for the intentions of those participating in the Novena. This Novena of Masses will be celebrated beginning All Souls Day, November 2nd thru November 10th. All Souls Day which we celebrate immediately after remembering all the saints in heaven on All Saints Day, provides us with an opportunity to pray for our beloved dead. “Our prayers for them rob death of its sting, assuage the bitterness of our sorrow, reconcile us to their loss, keep us in touch with our absent ones who are living in another and better world, and preserve their memories fresh and green in our heart.” Cardinal Gibbons All Souls Day Mass offering envelopes are located in the Narthex of the Church. Please fill out the offering envelope, insert your offering and place the envelope in the collection basket. Please return envelopes by noon Monday October 30, 2017. The list of names will be put in a basket and placed near the altar. CCF#603 - The Prophets: Message for Today. The prophets of the Old Testament were special messengers who received a call from God and changed their former way of life to follow it. Through the prophets, God spoke condemning rulers’ oppressive behavior, idolatry and lack of faith, advocating for the less fortunate. As social revolutionaries, the prophet’s message represented God’s continual involvement in man’s history and His option for the poor. You can ask “How does this apply today?” Come find out…

“Cultura de la Vida” El termino “cultura” de la muerte se refiere a una mentalidad, a una manera de ver al ser humano y al mundo, que fomenta la destrucción de la vida humana mas débil e inocente por parte de los mas fuertes, los que tienen poder pero el corazón
endurecido. ¿Eres tu esa voz que se escucha para defender al mas pequeño?
