My dear family of St. Andrew the Apostle!

The BIRTH OF A CHILD! And what a child, the Only-Begotten Son of God! Of course the angels are going to sing GLORY TO GOD IN THE HIGHEST, wishing PEACE upon all people of good will in the whole world and for all time — down through all the generations that have passed and that are yet to come in God’s plan! Jesus entered so humbly into our human relationships and family, why? Because we need a Savior, we need healing. Our human relationships, especially between male and female, need healing, God’s healing — and this is true today just as much as it was in generations past, even all the way back to Adam and Eve. Heartache, longing, uniting, and GLORY TO GOD are still sung today — and you know, it would be inconceivable if God had not given us a way of healing.

The original sin of Adam and Eve seems constantly to be repeated. After Moses, the Israelites continue being unfaithful to God and to one another, the kingship established by God in King David is contaminated by David’s adultery with Bathsheba and subsequent murder of her husband. In the genealogy of Jesus presented in the Gospel of Matthew, God is pointing a way towards healing. Particularly, the genealogy of Jesus mentions four faithful women. Tamar is first, who conceived Perez by her father-in-law Judah because he refused to give her one of his sons after the death of her husband. Rahab, the prostitute who protected Israel’s spies in Jericho before its destruction is the second mentioned in Jesus’ genealogy. Then Ruth, who was not Jewish but a foreigner Moabitess who chose to return to Israel with her mother-in-law Naomi and married Boaz, meeting him in the fields of Bethlehem, where Jesus was later to be born. Finally, Bathsheba is referred to (without mentioning her name) — she was the one who gave birth to Solomon after King David had committed adultery with her and murdered her husband Uriah. The Books of Judith and Esther present heroines who were instrumental in saving Israel, as well as the mother of the seven sons in the book of Maccabees who urged her sons to accept death rather than abandon the law of God (2 Macc 7). These women remained true to Yahweh despite their trials and corrupted ancestry, and they became sources of blessing for all. All these stories in God’s plan led up to Mary, Jesus’ mother, the faithful youthful woman who surrendered herself completely to God’s full plan for His Presence among us in the flesh of Jesus. No matter what our situation, faith in Yahweh heals!

After the Exile of the Jewish people from their homeland, a major shift took place in Israel’s view of women, especially in its view of marriage and divorce, monogamy and celibacy. Initially in early Jewish history, marriage was looked at from the man’s point of view. A woman took her man as her “Lord” (think pagan god Baal). She belonged to him, though she could not be sold as other property. Adultery was seen as against the husband’s rights, and was punishable by death. The husband could divorce his wife (Dt 24,1) for adultery and misconduct according to the strict Shammai school, or even for any reason according to the liberal Hillel school. Now after the Exile, there is a strong trend opposing divorce and a focus on fidelity to one’s wife. Yahweh says in Malachi, “I hate divorce” (Mal 2,14-16). This position is later reinforced by Jesus, who spoke out clearly against divorce as against God’s will “in the beginning” (Mt 19, 3-9). Jesus said divorce was allowed “because of the hardness of your hearts,” but this hardness (these stony hearts), as the prophet Ezekiel foresaw, would be removed by God’s Spirit. NOT mere mortal effort but God’s Spirit heals male-female alienation. Jesus also interiorizes the law against adultery (Mt 5,27ff.), indicating that the basis of faithfulness in marriage is a heart that is pure and centered on God.

Previously to the Exile, possession of two wives by one husband was normal (Dt 21,15), and with the emphasis on offspring, plural marriages were common. Kings and rich men could afford more wives. Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines (1 Kg 11,3)! Now after the Exile, monogamy is considered more perfect — see, for example, Tobit (Tob 8, 6-8) who explains the words of Genesis (2,24) as recommending monogamous marriage. Yahweh’s relation to Israel is more and more portrayed in a monogamous way. By the time of Jesus, monogamy was common practice. And interestingly enough, Jesus never addresses the question of polygamy!

Ultimately, it was Jesus’ death/resurrection and sending his Spirit into their hearts that brought about the restoration of God’s original intent for male-female relationships. At the cross, Mary is named by Jesus as “woman” and is given as “mother” to the beloved disciple. In his dying, Jesus hands over his Spirit, and out of his pierced side, as Eve from Adam’s side in the garden, comes forth blood and water as source of sacramental life. Mary and the church are the “New Eve” who with the “New Adam” give birth to many beloved disciples. And in the garden, Mary Magdalene is told not to cling to Jesus — as the first woman would do after the Fall — for Jesus had not yet risen. She was to go to his disciples, to find Jesus in his followers. Through his death Jesus makes real God’s unconditional, intimate and fruitful love which restores male-female relationships to permanent commitment and to being a bridge to intimacy with God and a blessing to offspring. Our restoration requires that we participate in this dying and rising process. Let us open our hearts to the light of Jesus’ new life, for God does not wish anyone to walk, or live, in darkness! Lord Jesus, send us your good and generous Holy Spirit and come, heal us this Christmas and always!

Jesus was born into a really broken, violent world. It was a dark place that needed a Savior. He wasn’t born into a perfect world, a picturesque setting

— not at all. The truth is that He brought light into the darkness. He

brought hope into turmoil. And He is still doing the same. If you feel like

our world is hopeless, like the violence is too much, the darkness too overbear-ing — then the Church’s ancient Advent prayer of “Come Lord Jesus” is what

you need on your lips. The tension of Advent is between the joy of a Savior and the constant reality of our broken world in which sin and sin’s effects remain. What can we do? We can pray more fervently every day, “come Lord Jesus.”

And we can pray for the grace to believe that He will come every day to transform our hearts into ones of love and mercy and kindness so that with His

grace we can make a difference in our world. He is still bringing light to the darkness, and He needs our hands and feet to help.

Advent Family Prayer During Advent, we not only prepare ourselves to celebrate the birth of Jesus, but we also check in to see if we are doing all the things that will keep us ready to receive Jesus when he comes again. Talk to your family about how you are doing in attending to your spiritual life as a family. Recommit yourselves to praying daily, reading Scripture, and staying faithful to God’s commandments. Pray together that through this Advent season your family will be more prepared to receive Jesus when he comes again.

God of Love, Your son, Jesus, is your greatest gift to us.

He is a sign of your love. Help us walk in that love during the weeks of Advent,

As we wait and prepare for his coming. We pray in the name of Jesus, our Savior.

Hospital Visitation of Parishioners Please remember that if you or any family members find yourselves in a hospital, be sure to let them know you are a parishioner at St. Andrew’s — it doesn’t hurt to say it a few times, either! Whenever we priests, deacons or Eucharistic Ministers come to visit, we check the hospital list of parishioners printed under “St. Andrew.” But if you’re not listed as a parishioner of St. Andrew, we won’t know you’re even there! A COMMUNITY OF WORD AND SACRAMENT SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION

CATECHUMENATE The Catechumenate is a community which gathers those adults who have not been baptized, and seek deeper insight into the Christian faith.

BAPTISM OF CHILDREN

We joyfully celebrate the baptism of children of Christian households which are joined to our weekly worship, and have active registration in our parish community for at least 3 months. After registration in the parish, please attend an Evening of Awareness, if you have not attended a class in the past two years, to register for Baptism and select a date. Classes are presented on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Baptism is celebrated on the third Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m.

EUCHARIST AND CONFIRMATION

Formation for those coming first to the table of the Lord as children is infused into the efforts of our school and Faith Formation Office. Confirmation formation is a two year process completed in eighth grade. Please call the Faith Formation Office for more information.

SACRAMENTS OF COMMITMENT

MARRIAGE

Marriage preparation is a six month process of prayer, reflection and study. Couples work with both the presider and a sponsor couple through this process. Please note that this six month period of preparation is essential.

ORDERS

Those seeking assistance in discerning a call to ordained ministry are encouraged to call the parish offices.

SACRAMENTS OF HEALING

RECONCILIATION Reconciliation is available each Saturday afternoon, 3:00pm, Wednesday evening, 5:45-6:45pm, through seasonal communal services, and by appointment.

ANOINTING

Anointing of the Sick is offered through seasonal services, and always by request. If hospitalized, please immediately seek anointing from the Catholic chaplain. I would like to have my house blessed.

St. Andrew the Apostle We Care Food Pantry

The St. Andrew We Care Food Pantry is open every Wednesday from 10:00 am. until 12:30 p.m. for any eligible family in Romeoville in need of food assistance.

The requirements to receive food commodities from the Pantry is that a valid State of Illinois Driver's License or State of Illinois ID and a current utility bill with your Romeoville address must be presented at the time of sign-in. Due to the poor economy, loss of employment or housing, and if you are currently residing with a Romeoville family, you may bring your valid Illinois Driver’s License or State ID AND a current utility bill from the Romeoville residents you are living with. Some proof of residency must be established. This must be brought to the Pantry each time you come for food assistance.
