Seré para ti
tan transitoria
como lo es para todos
la existencia
I will be so transitory to you
as existence is for everyone
4
….When I go to this encounter
the passing birds stand still
and appeased the other women that live in me
5
Corceles De Piedra
Cómo pudo extraviarse
esa niña sedienta que fui
— que a veces soy —
en un óleo cualquiera.
Cómo pudo tu azul reconocerla
al borde de una noche de dunas
y corceles de piedra
6
STONE STEEDS
How could that thirsty girl that I was
—sometimes I am—
get lost in any picture
How could your blue color recognize her
on a night´s border of dunes and stone steeds
7
INVOCACION
Al girasol pediré que te retenga
a la rosa
que te traiga anhelante
al clavel
que me sueñes
A la incauta astromelia
que te deje a mi lado
Todas las flores
me entregarán sus pétalos
y con brillo de estrellas distraídas
me colmaré de ti
8
INVOCATION
I will ask the sunflower to retain you
The rose to wantingly bring you
The carnation
That you may dream me…
The innocent astromelia
to leave you by my side
All flowers will give me petals
and with the glimpse of careless stars
I will overflow with you
9
DESDE SIEMPRE
Tu paso
— de una sílaba —
por mi fila
de palabras vacías
estaba anunciado desde siempre
Tu paso de ecos
como la lluvia
de tu tierra amada
era realidad antes de verte
Tus pasos
de cascabel y gaita
era lo que en mi alma acontecía
cuando la visitaban de niña los presagios
10
EVER SINCE
Your step
—of one syllable—
through my line of empty words
had been announced forever
Your step of echoes
like rain drops
of your beloved land
was true before seeing you
Your steps
of bagpipes and jingle bells
was to my very soul
as when I had it’s premonitions as a child
11
ENREDADO EN UN SUEÑO
¿De qué deseo olvidado
renaciste para estrechar nostalgias
y verdear palabras?
¿De qué beso retornaste
que reconozco cada uno de sus fuegos?
¿En qué sueño te viniste enredado
a recordarme que todavía es abril?
12
UNTANGLED IN A DREAM
From what forgotten desire did you spring
to gather nostalgias with young words?
From what far gone kiss did you return
that I recognize each of its fires?
From what dream did you escape
to remind me that it is still April?
13
TROVADOR
La guitarra y el canto
aceptan su destino
Tu sangre
galopa por el tiempo
en busca de mi vientre
Tu palabra
se a l e j a
14
TROUBADOUR
The guitar and the songs
accept their destiny
Your seed
gallops through time
in search of my womb
Your word
Vanishes
into the d i s t a n c e
15
16
WHAT DO YOU FEAR?
My hidden tenderness of wandering song?
The green of my tropic like clean water that springs from my inner self?
Is not your fear the reflection of that failing fire that pursues you?
17
PROMESA
Como el agua
colmaré tus rincones
compensaré el olvido
y el aprendizaje
de las cicatrices
18
PROMISE
Like falling water
I will fill your voids
undoing forgetfulness
and all the learning
of so many scars
19
PROFECIA
Ojos que no saben de soles
y se niegan a beber
— aunque sedientos —
no podrás abandonarla
20
PROPHESY
Eyes that do not know of sunshines
refusing to drink
—although thirsty—
my pure water
offering herself transparent and clear
Your ice will break
with my hidden sun
My moss
of locust
and palm tree caresses
will ignite the snows of your soul
After venturing in my forest
you will not be able to leave
21
HOMBRE
Hombre cábala misterio
hombre ternura
hombre mago palpitante y desnudo
hombre alegría
hombre ojos profundos
compañía
Hombre olor y tacto
hombre murmullo
hombre azul de mar
color de trópico
Hombre que indaga al infinito
pero ignora la respuesta
labrada en la palma de su mano
22
MAN
Enigma cabalistic man
Man of tenderness
magician and naked
joyful man
Profound eyes
companion
Tact and scent of man
Murmuring Sea
blue man color of the tropics
Man that quests the infinite
but knows not the answer
carved in the palm of his hand
23
¡Mi corazón
amo de naufragios
no sabe cómo sobrevivir a la esperanza!
My heart
— master of shipwreck's—
does not know how to survive hope!
24
Hermann Hesse
No sé de qué manera
entras
al territorio secreto
que me habita
Mientras caminas
—Como reconociéndome —
destellos de junio pueblan mi mirada
Te dejo recorrerme
Te cuento mis secretos
Te envuelvo con mi risa
Sé que vas de paso
No te detendré
25
YOU
“Each one gave me only what each one could give. And I gave to each one only what they could take from me”
Hermann Hesse
I wonder how you enter
the secret territory
that resides in me
As you walk
—as recognizing me—
sparks of June dwell my look
I let you go through me
I leave you my secrets
I wrap you with my laughter
I know you are passing by
I will not detain you
26
DESEO
Te percibo latente y me desbordo
Recrear tu esencia.
27
DESIRE
As I perceive you latently
I overflow
I want to find us beyond ourselves
To arrive in your arms
To the shore of your departure
And re-new your essence
28
PRESAGIO
sauce
cactus y sirena
y ahora garza peregrina
29
PRESAGE
That far away girl in the picture
already knew you
That girl that I saw
in the worn-out paper
had your blue on her honey eyes
It is the same sad girl that smiles
when rests from love over your chest
It is that girlish voice
that in dreams repeats
that she was a lotus
a sleeping willow
was cactus and a mermaid
and now a traveling heron
30
SIEMPRE
Siempre tu cuerpo igual
como esperando que lo reconozca
y lo apacigüe…
Siempre la eternidad en tu regreso,
que interroga y que calla.
31
ALWAYS THE SAME
Your embrace on a desolate night is always the same
As the same your loving and giving hands
Your glance that recovers the moments away from you
that escaped through the meek hollow of the past
That thirst always in you always in us
that eagerness that turns an instant
into centuries
Your body always the same
as if waiting to my soothing touch
Your return with a sense of eternity
Intriguing and quiet
32
33
FOR YOU
I know which of my caresses
makes the soul leave your body
I know how to capture your essence with poems
and gently prepare myself
for the sacred moment of surrender
For you I learn to become
silence
to be amphora
and to be water
and fire
After the dance
I am like a wave that flows and that goes away…
34
QUEDATE EN MI
No luches contigo
guerrero trashumante
Quédate en mí
Escucha la canción
que susurran mis manos
Aprisiona la ternura
apacigua mi arena
ansiosa de mar
35
STAY WITH ME
Do not fight yourself
passing warrior
Stay within me
Listen to the song
that my hands whisper
Imprison your tenderness
calm my sand
eager of sea
36
CONTRATO
La confesión secreta de dos seres
Y la esperanza
celebran un contrato
sin testigos
sin fechas
sin cláusulas
ni olvidos
37
THE SOLEMN VOW
The secret confession of two
And the wishful hope
Celebrated a solemn vow
without witnesses
dates
clauses
or forgetfulness
38
RENUNCIA
Tras la entrega, la renuncia
Y esa mansa paz
de poema adormecido
Entre las ramas
palabras abiertas como heridas
39
RENUNCIATION
Following surrender, the renunciation
And that gentle peace
Of sleeping poem
Amid the tweaks
Words open as wounds
40
INADVERTIDA
Esa gaviota cauta que compartió
la última mañana
sabía nuestro secreto
raíz de alga y arena
Ella solitaria
Vio esa ternura extraña
que se posó en la arena
41
UNNOTICED
That timid sea-gull
that shared our last morning
root of seaweed and sand
That lone sea-gull
Looked upon that strange gentleness
that settled in the sand
42
SECRETO
Ese nombre
que no pronunciarás
cuando cruces el mar
será tu silencio
será tu despedida
Ese nombre prohibido
preñado de vocales
ejercerá su oficio de campana
será pan
será aire
será tierra
¡Será el único nombre
que recuerdes
cuando te acerques
al fin de la jornada!
43
SECRET
That name
that you will not name
when you cross the ocean
will rest in silence…
in your good-bye
That forbidden name
full of vowels
will perfom its task of bell
it will be bread
it will be air
it will be earth
It will be the only name
that you shall remember
when you come close
at the end of your journey!
44
CUANDO TE ALEJES
Cuando te alejes
esa niña que fui
retozará contigo
en el lugar sin tiempo
que otros llaman paraíso
45
WHEN YOU GO AWAY
The girl in me
will play with you
in a timeless place
that others name paradise
46
AMANECERES
Me quedaré contigo
Aprenderás a verme
en los amaneceres
cuando tus ojos abarquen
la inmensidad del mar
47
DAWNS
I will stay with you
at dawn
when your eyes embrace
the vastness of the sea
48
A veces sólo contamos
con media hora de esperanza
que no alcanza a remendar el alma
Sometimes we can only rely
On half an hour of hope
never enough to mend the longing soul
49
DESAMOR
Tu olor a huésped voluptuoso
50
LOST LOVE
The scent you left me as a voluptuous guest
Became entangled with the rain and went away
51
EN LA ESTACION DE UN SUEÑO
“Hemos olvidado nuestros nombres
y nuestros pronombres se confunden
y se enlazan..."
Octavio Paz
En la estación de un sueño
Tu llovizna y mi niebla
Tu júbilo y mis ojos
Tus ojos y mi vientre
Mis manos y tu cuerpo
En la estación de un solo sueño
52
IN A SEASON OF DREAMS
We have forgotten our names
and our pronouns are confused and binded…
Octavio Paz
Your drizzle and my fog
Your jubilation and my eyes
Your eyes and my womb
My hands and your body
In a season of one dream only
53
SI ACASO
Si acaso regresas de tu viaje
y decides venir a visitarme
tráeme una palabra
la precisa
Para sembrarla
a la orilla de un enero
y a su sombra levantar mi única morada
y si no tienes palabras caminante
acércate
y estrecha mi nostalgia
54
IF BY CHANCE
If you return from your trip
And decide to visit
Bring me a word
The precise one
To plant it
By the banks of some January
to build under its shadow my only refuge
If you have no words traveler
Come near
and embrace my memories
55
PACTO
Si llovizna por tu calle
y quieres secarte
56
PACT
If by chance it drizzles on your street
and you wish to dry your body
within my arms
If silence overcomes
and you remember that strange language
learnt by my side
If you return
to dampen with moons the memories
If the tropic impatiently claims you
within its verdour
Or if by chance it is night in your dwelling
I shall leave the door open
57
VOZ
Cómo puede una voz
—que no es voz —
sino aire clandestino
anudar el embrujo
que lastima y apresa
y aferrarme a la vida
58
VOICE
How can a voice
—that is not a voice—
but a clandestine air
Tie the spell
that hurts and captures
and hold me to life
59
¿CÓMO LLEGASTE AQUI?
¿Cómo tu voz en mi ánfora secreta?
¿Cómo tu blanca vela por mi puerto?
¿Cómo arribó tu quilla a mi muelle solitario?
¿Cómo resucitaste y desde cuándo
fantasma que atormenta mis paisajes?
¿Cómo alcanzó tu rostro esa línea de mis lluvias de abril?
60
HOW DID YOU REACH ME?
How your voice in my secret amphora?
How your withe sail on my port?
How did your keel arrive at my solitary pier?
How did your resuscitate and since when
spirit that torments my landscapes?
How did your face achieve my April rains?
61
SUEÑO CON VER EL MAR
Sueño con ver el mar
el mar me acerca a ti
A medida que borra
las huellas en la arena
consigue nuevamente
62
I DREAM OF SEEING THE SEA
I dream of seeing the sea
The sea brings me closer to you
As it undoes
The marks in the sand
Once again in a mysterious manner
rubs your wings against mine
63
ENCUENTRO
Si la vida
nos regala otro encuentro
te dejaré ser tú
seré
sencillamente yo
Escucharé
cuando se unan
la melodía
de tu música
y la mía
64
ENCOUNTER
If life
grants us another moment
I will let you be yourself
I will
simply be myself
I will listen
when the melody
of your music
and mine
melt
65
...¡ Pero aún te amo
como a un paisaje inexistente!
….But I still love you
Like an inexistent landscape
66
BÚSQUEDA
¿Hasta cuándo la luz en la ventana
y el corazón bebiéndosela a sorbos?
¿Hasta cuándo
la cacería de sueños
sin destino?
67
QUEST
Until when the sun ray in the window pane
and the heart sipping it away?
Until when
this dream quest
without a north star?
68
sutiles y doradas
de esa antigua esperanza
Esos sueños inadvertidos y callados
han contagiado su color
a nuestra propia esencia
Si parten
— dicen los sabios —
dan cabida al olvido en nuestra senda
¿Qué dirían si supieran
que en esta noche gris
estoy dispuesto a abandonar la vida
antes aún de la esperanza?
69
SO SAY THE SAGES
So say the sages
—To whom I resort at the violet hour —
when love is lost
It is difficult to cut the binds
Subtle and golden
Of that old hope
If they go leave
—say the sages —
They allow space for oblivion in our path
What would they say if
on this gray night
I am willing to abandon life
Even before I abandon hope?
70
71
TO NAME THIS ABSENCE
With absences that we learn to name
such as childhood
or the smell of fresh baked bread
Spelling names of far away friends
and those roads once walked together
To name this absence
woven on rainy afternoons with Grandfather’s tales
Absences that stamps existence
—since ever—
like a deceased father
braided with the years
to be recalled any day
with tenderness of a silent sea
But how to name his absence
When he dwells my universe
If still unnamed?
and even if I never name him
the word absence shall reside secretly
when called upon to name us
72
DISTANCIA
Mi nombre
el que marcaste con tu acento
se fuga algunas veces de mi lado
y busca tus lugares
Recorre
el cordón plateado que nos une
y vuelve a recordarme
mi destierro
73
DISTANCE
My name
The one you marked with your accent
sometimes flees from my side
and searches your whereabouts
Walks
the silver cord that joins us
and returns
to remind me of our distance
74
75
IN THE MORNINGS
Mostly in the mornings
When the gleam of dreams
Persists in memory
It’s easy to forget the absence
You feel the obscure solitude of the afternoon
And night leads us yet again
To the question that the rain repeats
With no hope and returns
76
LAS OTRAS
Hay épocas del año
cuando las heridas
cobran vida
Esta tarde de viernes melancólico
despertaron las cicatrices de mi cuerpo
mis dedos las palpan temerosos
Es entonces
cuando duelen más
las otras
las del alma
77
THOSE FROM THE SOUL
There are times during the year
When wounds
Awaken
Like in this melancholic Friday afternoon
My fingers touch them with fear
It is then
When Those of the soul
Hurt me more
78
SOLEDAD
Hoy
cuando por fin consigo
derrotar al silencio
Sonríe al recordarme
cuánto le pertenezco
79
SOLITUDE
Today
When at last I am able
to defeat silence
The same solitude smiles when it reminds me
How much I belong to it
80
UNCION
La cicatriz
y ese dolor antiguo
— casi tormenta —
se refugia azorado
en el olvido
81
THE SCAR
And that old hurt
—almost storm—
Seeks flustered shelter in oblivion
82
Aquel que intentaste atrapar con metáforas
no fue tampoco él
Nor was he the one you tried to capture
with metaphors
83
OLVIDO
Cruce ese umbral
Donde confluyen miradas y cenizas
Pero ya fue imposible
recobrar su sonrisa
84
OBLIVION
I crossed the threshold of
looks and ashes
Yet it was impossible
To recover his smile
85
86
SHELF OF MEMORIES
Tired of mornings, this afternoon
Has swept away
The full moon of your love in my life
First will go the touch of your restless hands
And then
The hidden tenderness with which you sometimes loved me
Will have to come apart on the pillow
From the shelf your words
will fly until they lose
The track of the road that led us to our encounter
The past will hide in my poems
and the dreams we shared
Will love each other in the moon of the mirror
Spreading forgetfulness in my dwelling
87
TAPIZ
Descoso cada día
los hilos del apego
Desprendo de mi falda
tus nostalgias
tus miedos
tus culpas y las mías
En una tierra nueva
mis raíces se hunden
Se apaciguan tormentas interiores
purifico mi cántaro secreto
88
TAPESTRY
Every day I undo
The threads of detachment
I remove from my skirt
Your nostalgia
Your fears
Your guilt and mine
In a new land
My roots sink
My inner storms calm down
I purify my secret crucible
89
he regresado
no espero nada a cambio
el camino me ha enseñado
que cuando doy
recibo en abundancia
90
I COME FROM THE ABSENCE
I come from the absence
the journey has been long
I present myself denuded of hope
With depurated certainty
And an excess of truth in my baggage
To alleviate your pain
I do not know for how long I will remain
I have returned
I expect nothing in return
The road has shown me
That when I give
I receive abundantly
91
PIEL DE CIUDAD
En esta tarde húmeda
el olvido pobló
esta piel de mi ciudad dormida
tanto tiempo devastada por tu ausencia
y el l a r g o silencio sembrado
con el punto final de tu partida
92
CITY SKIN
On that humid afternoon
Oblivion inhabited
This skin of my sleeping city
So long devastated by your absence
And the long silence planted
With the full end of your departure
93
mientras nosotros
vulnerables
vemos florecer viejas heridas
94
SOMETIMES NOSTALGIA
On silent Sunday afternoons nostalgia betrays us
and an illicit memory slips into the even hours
Memory and oblivion confront each other in battle
While we
Vulnerable
Watch our old wounds blossom again
The impassive passing of the days
Gives us back colored and gray memories
And steals the slowly woven peace
thread of that inner light that sustains us
95
96
TURNING THE PAGE
Again I have turned the page
and my days become inhabited by vowels
That dance in consonant of my desires
my daily habits
my solitude
I expeled your name from my limits
and it no longer visits me at night
Today I would like to speak to you
the oblivion of that love
You are
incapable of giving
97
98
INVITATION
Today I invite the future to sit at my table
to taste with me each dream I have
I will come close to my own self
with love and reverence
so as to summon up slowly by their names
all women who are inside me and inhabit my every self
to each I will listen silently
to learn from them.
Conjuring my past I will invoke the mystery
and in the twisted plot of the Cosmos clasping me,
I will wholly fulfill the closures that I owe myself
as farewell to all my memories.
Once I complete the inventory
the distant word will nest in me anew
at the undiscovered boundary of my soul
with its burden of unwilling love,
will shelter me invariably on its breast
toward the original dimension
where memory has rested for millennia.
99
dando otra luz a mi camino
100
...And at last the moment came
I quietly flow as water that returns
and you who were the wind
will no longer whisper secrets to my ear
To new land my soul will travel
Learning the magic of the corn and the weeping willow
As the mystery of fire arrives once more
To give another splendor to my path
101
Cada recuerdo tuyo
que inesperado arribe a mi memoria
repetirá callado todo aquello de mi
que comprendí a tu lado
Each memory that
Unexpectantly reaches me
Will silently repeat all that of
myself
I discovered with you
