Activities Carried Out During The Year
Science For Kids
We´ll invite children from elementary and secondary school to visit our campus
(CIACyT, UASLP). We have different workshops for the kids, where they learn basic
principles of optics, photonics and math.
The names of the workshops are: "microscopic world, playing with light, the
essential is invisible to eyes, optics & the brain, and polarizers".
At the end of the event, all the kids were happy for the things that they learned,
and for the diploma that they received. You can find all the photos and videos in our
Facebook Page “SPIE Student Chapter UASLP”
https://www.facebook.com/SPIEstudentchapterSLP/
Each kid had his diploma for the participation at the final of the activity, and our
advisor help us to give to each child a kit with a t-shirt and a bag with a notebook, a
pen, a pencil and a bottle of water.
Microscopic World:
Observation of different objects and living beings with a Scanning Electron Microscope
Playing With Light:
Analysis of optical phenomena caused by the interaction of the light with different materials
The Essential Is Invisible To Eyes:
The infrared radiation and the way of detected it are explained here, one activity of this
workshop is take a photo of each attendant that can have it printed when the event was
finished
Optics & the Brain
The attendants learn about the generation of 3D images and light diffraction, they used
stereoscopic lenses for watch 3D images in the different screens as well as the diffraction
lenses for look the diffraction patterns with different light colors
Polarizers:
Kids learned about the concept of polarization of the light and how the polarized light is around
of all us in our life
Conclusion and Diplomas
The kids commented about the different workshops and their favorite part of each
Lunch With Experts
We participate organizing the event that is part of the “3rd Mexican Meeting of
Terahertz Science and Technology” where in the final event, in base with the
experience of the Optics + Photonics we decided to organized a “Lunch with the
Experts” where the attendees to the meeting had the chance to be a little more close
with the professors in an informal environment eating tacos and talking about their
topics and have fun.
In the “3rd Mexican Meeting of Terahertz Science and Technology” we had the
honor to have the visit of PhD. Saiful Khondaker and PhD. Robert Peale, both of
them give us some topics and share some counsels for the life after the graduation
as PhD.
Coffee Science
The main idea of this activity it’s invite research that can talk with students and
the public in general, to share their experiences in science, study and personal life
while everybody drinks a cup of coffee.
It’s an outdoor activity for students that is recorded, and the video is uploaded
to YouTube where, in collaboration with the OSA’s Chapter, and the Student Chapter
of the Materials Mexican Society, we’ve a play list of the events that we do in the
UASLP and is part of a project of Mexican SPIE chapters.
International Day of the Woman and Girls in the Science
We were invited to participated in the International Day of the Woman and girl
in the science in the museum of the train in the State, so we invited three woman
that were involved in science to do this activity.
Three researchers that are in different stage of expertise in the life, a
consolidated research, PhD. Isabel Sada, a research that is in ascends with a lot of
new work, the PhD. Luisa Eugenia Del Socorro Hernández Arteaga, a new
graduated research, PhD Guadalupe García Valdivieso, were the woman that
collaborate in this activity with a public to motivated to get involve of science.
The program was also conduced for a student who invite to all the presents to
make question and that did that the researchers share some experiences in their
professional life.
For special occasion, the video was in a Facebook Live transmission in our
page, the link can be find it in:

Solar Eclipse
The past august 21, we invited a group of high school for the special event to
see the solar eclipse, in total it was 120 persons that take part of this were we
organized other workshops to understand the importance of this. Local press assists
also to make notes of this activity.
Tale Contest
We organized a contest for middle school students where they can create a
tale in two different categories: Mexican in the science and science fiction, we had
two winners in each category winning tablets, cups, pencils, pens and chocolates.
The best 10 stories of all the contest are in process to be published in a book
with an ISBN register. The contest was promoted in four different middle schools of
the city, receiving 66 stories in total.
There were 4 different stages to evaluate each tale, first it was checked that it
had the format that was solicited for the contest, in the second stage the plagiarism
was checked before to be revised three times for different evaluators and that the 5-
best tales of each category pass to the final round with different evaluators to choose
the winners.
We invite to the Conseil of Science and Technology of the State (COPOCYT)
and with the Student Chapter of the Materials Mexican Society that help us to give
the prizes. At the final of the award event we invite to the winners and the teachers
to the lunch with experts of the 4th Meeting of Material’s Science.
All the participants had the diploma for the participations and it was delivered
in their schools in front of all their classmates having a good response of the
authorities of the school.
Fridays at COPOCYT
We organized different activities in the last Fridays of the 5 last months in
collaboration with the Conseil of Science and Technology of the State (COPOCYT)
where we did some experiments with kids of different elementary schools with the
objective to cultivate the interest in science in the new generations. In each day we
had approximately 30 participants in each day.
The Science Street
We decided to make the science close to the persons that don’t have an easy
access to this opportunity, this is why we organized an event similar to the Science
for kids but in a poor neighborhood, one of the persons lend us some rooms of the
house and for other activities we close a street for make the experiments.
At the final, all the habitants of the street was very happy because it was the
first time that they had an opportunity to be close with a group of the university and
motivate the students to keep in the school, even though this is not very common in
their ambiance.
International Museum’s Day
We participate in the international museum’s day in one interactive museum of
the city where we collaborated with one event. The event has a lot of impact because
the average of visitants in the museum is of a 500 visitants in this special events.
Astronomic Night
We’d a participation in the astronomic night in a museum of the city with almost
120 participants, with experiments of polarized light and with 3D images explained
what this is and how it works.
Science And Technology Week
There is an entire week that is dedicated to the science and technology in the
university, students of different elementary, middle and high schools visit the
laboratories and we participate explained some experiments and optical effects.
There were almost 80 participants in total that we attend in the event.
Science in the Kindergarten
We went to the kindergarten "Cedie number 4" where we worked with children
of aged 4-5 years where we wanted to give to know in simple and didactic way some
physical phenomena such as electrostatics, physical pressure and non-Newtonian
fluid.
At the end all the kids understood that there is science behind these physical
phenomena, and it’s not something of “magic” what happens with this.
Meeting with Other Science Outreach Groups
We started to collaborate with other science outreach groups in the state, this
as very helpful for us for make good relationships and work together for organize
activities that has more impact.
The Conseil of Science and Technology of the State (COPOCYT) helped a lot
for make this possible and one of the best things is that now this chapter is part of
the Divulgation Network for Science and Technology (REDICITI) in the state of San
Luis Potosí.
Science Christmas Inns
In México there is tradition that, days before of Christmas to have a little party
between the neighborhoods, coworkers and family, with this idea we organize the
Science Christmas Inns in a rural community with some scientific experiments and
at the final share a happy moment with them. For make this activity, we collaborate
with the Student Chapter of the Materials Mexican Society.
National Tournament open tunas 2018
Participated in the first rubik national tournament as part of the staff, where it
was a success. The place of the event took place in the Plaza Tangamanga in San
Luis Potosí.
The tournament consisted in assembling rubik cubes in their different
modalities; 3X3, 4X4, 3X3 with feet, etc. This event was the first to be held in the city
and thanks to the results obtained, the state can be the official venue for an
international event.
Our advisors helped in the organization part of the event with the intention of
promoting our chapter and participating in events of this kind.

Recruitment And Social Meetings
The student chapter will have a designated space to display our activities. We
display the projects that have been developed, which are in development as well as
future projects.
Also we´ll give some conversations on the school activities, social activities and
leisure activities that we perform as chapter. In addition, we´ll hand out flyers and
advertising our chapter.
In addition of this, we made some meetings where we try to have a space to
be create a good relationship between the members and be clear that we can have
great moments in company of all of us.
Some people can think that this moments are not so much important for the
work of the Chapter, but for us it’s the best way to remember that if we stay together
we can do amazing things like a team and that each member of the Chapter has an
important job to do for us, not only because of the work he does day by day, but
because of the importance for a team to stay together and work for a better society.
Social Meetings
Assistance to Optics + Photonics 2017
We had the opportunity to assist to the Optics+Photonics 2017 in San Diego,
California, USA, where we could go to the leadership workshop that was so much
helpful to know about different topics that we put in action even though the activities
of the Chapter, and in daily work.
Additionally, we could show our activities in the poster session and establish
networks with other students of other part of the world where we started to
collaborate in some chapter activities, one of this is the Tale Contest that was
something that it was very interest for the other chapters. Also, two of the guys of
the chapter presented some advances in their doctoral works.
Planned Activities For The Future
