House Democratic Leader Steny Hoyer acknowledged that an immi-gration reform is not part of the 2009 priorities, even though President-Elect Barack Obama offered to approve it during his first year on the job.
At a press conference Nov. 18 following the announcement of theDemocratic priorities for 2009, Hoyer mentioned as priorities an eco-nomic stimulus, national security, energy reform, global warming, healthcare, fiscal responsibility and social security reform as priorities, but theimmigration issue was absent.
Asked by Mexican news agency Notimex about this omission, Hoyersaid “although I didn’t mention in my speech, will certainly be an item onthe agenda, but it will not be the first item on the agenda. The economywill be the first item on the agenda.”
Hoyer also mentioned the meeting between Obama and McCain thattook place Nov. 17 saying that, even though he didn’t know the contentof the conversation, for him it was clear that immigration was not a keycampaign issue because both candidates had very similar points of viewabout immigration reform.
Hoyer mentioned that this issue encompasses two very important pre-mises. The first and most important is national security and border secu-rity. “Our nation must be secure, our borders must be secure, and thosewho come into the United States need to be those that we know arecoming into the United States and are authorized to come into the UnitedStates,” he said.
The second premise is the number of people who are working in theshadows, something that according to Hoyer is not good for the economyand is not good for them. He also said that a massive deportation of theestimated 12 million undocumented workers who are in the US doesn’tmake sense.
“It’s not realistic, we think, to take effort to kick all of them out. That’snot possible, nor is it advisable.”
According to Notimex, House President Nancy Pelosi recently saidthat an immigration reform will require a joint effort between Democratsand Republicans to pass.

Agentes de la Patrulla Fronteriza detuvieron en el oeste de Texas a unsospechoso de un asesinato en Aurora, junto con otros dos hombres. Elarresto se hizo el 16 de noviembre cerca de un bar en la población fronterizade Presidio, Texas.
El sospechoso, Bernardo Beltrán, está acusado de asesinar en 1996 asu hija de cinco meses, Yasmín Beltrán. El acusado llevó a la niña alhospital el 28 de agosto de 1996, diciendo que su hija se había caído dela cama. La niña murió a la mañana siguiente y Beltrán fue acusado deviolencia agravada contra un niño. Sin embargo, huyó antes de serarrestado.

Beltran took the girlto the hospital on Aug. 28, 1996saying his daugher had fallen fromher bed. She died the followingmorning and Beltran was chargedwith aggravated battery of a child,however, he fled before he couldbe arrested.
According to a press release is-sued by the US Customs and Bor-der Protection, Border Patrolagents followed the tracks of threepeople who entered the UnitedStates illegally and were arrestedshortly after, when they wereboarding a taxi cab near a bar.
After transporting the detainees
to the Presidio station, the agentsentered their information in theagency’s IAFIS system, a databaseof fingerprints and criminal histo-ries submitted by federal, state andlocal authorities. After entering asearch in the system, results areavailable within minutes.
IAFIS reported that Beltranwas wanted for murder in Au-rora. He is currently at thePresidio County jail pendingextradition. The other two ar-rested are facing charges of en-tering the country illegally.

Public transportationgets expensive
Local fare to go up to $1.75
Fares on Pace buses will go up Jan. 1, following approval of theproposed 2009 budget by the agency’s Board of Directors.
The general fare increase takes effect Jan. 1 and raises adult fareson fixed route service by $0.50. This change affects the Local FareZones found in Aurora, Elgin, Joliet and Waukegan. Also on that date,Pace will stop accepting the CTA 7-Day, Visitor/Fun Passes and U-Pass.
The last fare increase on Pace fixed route service was implementedin April, 2001.

El reconocimiento Ciudadano del Año Roscoe Ebey será entregadopor el alguacil del Condado de Kane, Pat Pérez en una ceremonia enlas oficinas del Departamento del Alguacil en Geneva.
El reconocimiento Roscoe Ebey se da a ciudadanos que impulsan laactividad y hacen la diferencia en su comunidad.
El padre David fue nominado por Manny Maysonet de Aurora. Deacuerdo a un comunicado de prensa difundido por la oficina delalguacil, Maysonet nominó al padre David por “su compromisoincansable hacia la comunidad de Aurora ... y por proveer un liderazgoexcepcional en las áreas de desarrollo comunitario y derechos de losinmigrantes”.

AURORA – Father David Engbarth, a familiar figure in the commu-nity who for several years was in charge of St. Nicholas Church andnow is the pastor at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, will be hon-ored Nov. 21 with the Citizen of the Year Award.
The Roscoe Ebey Citizen of the Year Award will be presented tofather David by Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez at a ceremony in thesheriff’s office in Geneva.
Father David was nominated by Manny Maysonet of Aurora.Maysonet wrote in his nomination letter that he was nominating fa-ther David because of “a tireless commitment to the Aurora commu-nity... and providing outstanding leadership in the areas of commu-nity development and immigrant rights,” according to a press releaseissued by the sheriff’s office.
The award, created in 2007 in honor of Aurora Township residentRoscoe Ebey who was murdered in his home, recognizes citizens whoare proactive and are making a difference in their community.
An alert neighbor, Leslie Fleming, noticed that something was “notright” at Ebey’s home and went to check on him. Fleming caught theoffender climbing out a window of Ebey’s home. With complete disre-gard for his own safety Mr. Fleming put himself in harm’s way to helphis neighbor. Fleming was the first recipient of this award.
Citizens Police Academy introductionIn keeping with the them of creating partnerships between the citi-
zens and the police, Sheriff Perez will be introducing the Kane CountyCitizen Police Academy after the awards presentation.
The academy will give community members and inside look at locallaw enforcement, and will allow participants to experience conditionssimilar to the training that officers receive, exposing them to the dailyduties of police officers.

Advantages: Easy to start, partners share inthe cost of starting a business, form 1065 nottaxed by IRS, Asset Protection for Limited Part-ners, etc.
Disadvantages: No asset protection for gen-eral partners, high taxes possible, conflicts be-tween partners may arise, etc.

Crime down again in Illinois,drops in every category

SPRINGFIELD – Crime in Illinois fell by more than 3 percent last year,continuing a 13-year slide that resulted in 210,000 fewer crimes than in1994, according to data released Nov. 19 by the Illinois State Police.
Each type of offense, from murder to theft, dropped in 2007, a trendthat experts attributed partly to tougher drug laws and dispersal of dense,high-poverty neighborhoods.
Police agencies around Illinois reported 456,000 serious crimes in 2007,a 3.1 percent drop from the year before, the data showed. That's nearly 32percent fewer crimes than the 666,500 reported in 1994, the last time thenumber increased.
After a one-year uptick, murders fell 4.3 percent to 752 last year, andlaw enforcement reported drops in every other category of serious crime:rape, robbery, battery, burglary, larceny, auto theft and arson.
“Law enforcement cannot get complacent as a result of this overalldecrease,” state police director Larry G. Trent said in a prepared state-ment. “We must ensure that resources and manpower are utilized effec-tively to maintain this trend.”

races for U.S. Senate and gover-nor in 2010. He added the candi-date has to be somebody whocan win more than a Republicanprimary.
Edgar was Illinois’ governorfor eight years in the 1990s. Hewas among panelists analyzingthe Nov. 4 election at an eventsponsored by the Institute of
Government & Public Affairs atthe University of Illinois.
Edgar said he is most con-cerned as a Republican by howstrongly Hispanics voted forDemocrat ic President-electBarack Obama. He said if the GOPlose the Hispanic vote like it hasthe African-American vote it willbe a minority party forever.

LOS ANGELES – A group of college students who lit a ridge-topbonfire is being blamed for accidentally sparking one of three fero-cious wildfires that collectively destroyed about 1,000 homes andblacked more than 65 square miles.
An anonymous tipster told police 10 students gathered a week agonear an abandoned home in the hills of Montecito, Santa BarbaraCounty Sheriff Bill Brown said Nov. 18.
They built a bonfire during the night and stayed until 3 a.m. to 5 a.m.Nov. 13. By that night, when winds took hold of it, the seeminglyharmless blaze was on its way to destroying 210 Santa Barbara homes,including multimillion-dollar properties, authorities said.
The students, aged between 18 and 22, apparently believed theyhad put out the fire before leaving. Fire officials said it is not uncom-mon for such fires to have the potential to re-ignite days later.
“It appears this fire was the result of carelessness, not criminal intent,”said Brown, who added that the students all lived locally and attended thesame school. He declined to say which one or identify the students.
Though Brown said there was no “malicious intent,” the countydistrict attorney will review the case and determine if criminal chargesare filed.
The fire burned intensely into the weekend, chewing up 1,900 acresand injuring more than two dozen people.
The Montecito blaze was the first of three to erupt in SouthernCalifornia that collectively damaged or destroyed about 1,000 homes.
In Los Angeles County, an 11,234-acre fire in the San FernandoValley was 85 percent contained Nov. 19. About 50 miles to the south,the last remaining evacuation order was lifted in Orange County, wherea nearly 29,000-acre complex of fires was 90 percent contained andsome of the 3,760 firefighters were being sent home.
The worst-hit area was the Oakridge Mobile Home Park in Sylmar,about 20 miles north of downtown Los Angeles, where 484 homeswere destroyed.

LOS ANGELES – Un grupo deestudiantes universitarios queencendieron una hoguera en lacima de una loma han sidoculpados de encender poraccidente uno de los tresdevastadores incendios forestalesque han destruido alrededor de milcasas y han ennegrecido más de65 millas cuadradas.
Una llamada anónima informó ala policía que un grupo de 10estudiantes se había reunido haceuna semana cerca de una casaabandonada en las colinas deMontecito, dijo el 18 de noviembreBill Brown, alguacil del Condadode Santa Bárbara.

El área más afectada fue el Parquede Vivendas Móviles Oakridge enSylmar, aproximadamente 20 millasal norte del centro de Los Ángeles,donde 484 casas fueron destruidas.

AURORA – After a landslide victory over her Republican challenger,State Rep. Linda Chapa LaVia is ready to tackle new issues at the Illi-nois House of Representatives.
On a phone interview from the House floor, Chapa LaVia said she washumbled by the overwhelming support she received from the district’svoters, especially those who were voting for the first time. “It makes mywin more humbling,” she said of the new American citizens who partici-pated in these elections. “They took their power and used it to em-power their community.”
Among the issues that are at the top of her list are looking for anequitable way to fund public education in the state, helping lower thecrime rate in her district and getting more information out to the His-panic community about their rights. As Vice-chair of the Veterans Af-fairs committee, veterans issues are a priority.
She is also working with State Sen. Iris Martinez on a proposal todeal with the foreclosures and mortgage loan issues that are affectingstate residents.
Chapa-LaVia said that along with the Illinois Legislative Latino Cau-cus she will be working on the drivers certificates for undocumentedimmigrants, as well as the New Americans Initiative.

AURORA – Después de una abrumadora victo-ria sobre su contrincante republicana, la represen-tante estatal Linda Chapa LaVia está lista para abor-dar nuevos temas en la Cámara de Representantesdel Estado.
En una entrevista telefónica desde el piso de laCámara, Chapa LaVia dijo sentirse halagada por elapoyo tan grande que recibió de los electores deldistrito, particularmente de los que votaron por pri-mera vez, que fueron en su mayoría hispanos.

MEXICO – All the gossip was true: Mexico State governor Enrique Peña Nieto andAngelica Rivera “Gaviota” are a couple. Their romance was openly discussed by PeñaNieto last week, during the Shalala TV show.
“I’m very happy,” he said.A bit nervous, the Mexico State governor confirmed that he has been dating actress
Angelica Rivera for about four months.Even when the politician didn’t give any details about his relationship, he said they
had clicked when Rivera was selected to be the spokesperson for an ad campaign promot-ing the state of Mexico. Their romance history goes back to Nov. 14, 2007.
“I met her through the advertisement campaign that she [Rivera] was gracious toparticipate in to promote the state of Mexico. We started going out and, like any otherromance, you go out once or several times, then you express what you feel and you starta relationship,” he said.
Peña Nieto said that he never considered they were in a steady relationship until heasked her to be his girlfriend: “Yes [I asked her to be my girlfriend], to be in a more formalrelationship. We are getting to know each other, this is a young relationship and it’s aformal relationship.”
Even when he is pleased with how the relationship is evolving, he didn’t announce animpending wedding. “We have complicated activities. She has her job and I have mine.I’m very please. It would be good to ask her how she feels. For now we don’t have otherplans beyond being in a relationship and getting to know each other better.”
However, he said he has talked to his children about his new romance. “I have talkedabout it with my children and the accept it, except for the boy, the rebellious one; hedoesn’t say anything, he doesn’t want to know anything. My daughters are fine with it,the problem is with my son. The same happens with her, she has three daughters. This isa period of adjustments.”
Even when the governor’s daughters approve his relationship, there is still no date forboth families to meet. “That I don’t know, looking forward, I don’t know,” Peña Nieto said.
