Member comments about salary negotiation:

+ n  Know what you want:

n  “If you don't ask for what you want, you won't get it.”

n  “Ask for more than you want, so you can negotiate for what you need.”

n  Think about what you want down the road: n  “Build in a tier (raise at 1, 3, 5 years) with annual cost of living

increases Some practices have you take a low salary i.e. $70,000 for the first 6 months - 1 year, until you start generating income.”

n  “Your initial salary in the practice sets your earnings for your duration at that practice.”

n  Think about the details: n  “40hr work week includes call.”

n  “Discuss incentive bonuses.”

n  “Avoid delivery bonus - makes you a competitor with your boss or your peers and affects how you make treatment decisions.”

n  “Fight no compete clause.”* n  Non-compete clauses are valid in GA as of 2012- however the

geographic scope & length of terms may be negotiated.

n  “Negotiate tail coverage”***

n  Don’t forget that things can change. n  Contracts can be modified to exclude or include items that were

not part of your original negotiation.

n  Productivity requirements can change.

n  New partners can enter the picture (Practices in the ATL metro area are being increasingly sold to multi-practice management companies.)
