Lectura El Cinco de Mayo La fiesta del Cinco de Mayo (5th of May) celebra la victoria del ejército
mexicano sobre Francia en la Batalla de Puebla en 1862. Es una festividad
de México que en los Estados Unidos se convierte en una celebración de la
cultura y la herencia mexicana.
LA HISTORIA DEL CINCO DE MAYO:
LA BATALLA DE PUEBLA
En 1861 Benito Juárez es el presidente de México,
una nación que está en la ruina financiera y que no
puede pagar su deuda a los gobiernos europeos.
Como México no tiene dinero para pagar, Francia,
Gran Bretaña y España envían sus fuerzas armadas
a Veracruz en México para demandar el pago.
Gran Bretaña y España negocian con México y
retiran su ejército. Pero Francia, dirigida por Napoleón III, quiere usar esta
oportunidad para crear un imperio francés en el territorio de México. A
finales del año 1861, una armada francesa asalta Veracruz y retira al
presidente Juárez y su gobierno.
Pasó el tiempo y una tropa de 6,000
franceses bajo el mando del General Charles
Latrille de Lorencez sale a atacar un pueblo
mexicano que se llama Puebla de Los
Ángeles. Desde su nuevo centro de mando en
el norte, Juárez reúne a un grupo de 2,000
hombres y los envía a Puebla. Dirigidos por
el General Ignacio Zaragoza, los mexicanos
fortifican Puebla y se preparan para el ataque

de los franceses. El 5 de mayo de 1862, Lorencez guía a su ejército bien
armado con artillería pesada hacia la ciudad de Puebla y la ataca por el
norte. La batalla dura desde el amanecer hasta el comienzo de la tarde. Los
franceses se retiran y pierden cerca de 500 soldados mientras que los
mexicanos pierden menos de 100 hombres en el conflicto. Los franceses
están derrotados.
La Batalla de Puebla no es una victoria estratégica en la guerra de los
mexicanos contra los franceses, pero representa una victoria simbólica
para el gobierno de México. Seis años más tarde Francia se retira de
México gracias al apoyo militar y la presión política de Estados Unidos.
CELEBRANDO EL CINCO DE MAYO
En México, celebran el Cinco de Mayo en el
estado de Puebla y también en algunas otras
partes del país. Las tradiciones incluyen
desfiles militares, recreación de la Batalla de
Puebla y otros eventos festivos. Para muchos
mexicanos, sin embargo, el 5 de mayo es un
día como otro cualquiera.
En Estados Unidos, el Cinco de Mayo es una
celebración de la cultura mexicana y su
herencia, particularmente en áreas donde la
comunidad México-Americana es grande. Hoy en día lo celebran con
desfiles, fiestas, música de mariachi, bailes folklóricos y comida
tradicional como tacos y mole poblano.
