In English we have 5 vowel letters but these vowels have 12 respective sounds.

The are called !owels because the are pronounced with a free passage of air fromthe mouth to the lar n"...at no time does an thing within the mouth#the tongue$ or thelar n" or the lips touch...

The other sounds which are called consonants all have something touching whenbeing pronounced. %e have 21 consonants.
