    Jerzy Grotowski (19331999)

Polish theatre director, cultural practitioner and thiner, researcher ofhuman behaviour under ' meta-daily conditions '.Along with Ludwi Flaszen, Grotowsi too over the Theatre of the13 Rows in Opole in 1959. Together, they transformed it into theLaboratory Theatre, in which they realised their conception of ' poor

theatre ', most etensively articulated in the classic volumeTowards a Poor Theatre, edited by Eugenio Barba (1968).This idea emphasized the essential element of any theatreevent: te intensie prticiption of ctors n specttors in sre

space, shaped anew for each meeting between them.Peter Broo called Grotowsi ' unique ', because ' no-one else in the world,[], no-one since Stanislavsi, has investigated the nature of acting, its

phenomenon, its meaning, the nature and science of its mental-physical-emotional processes as deeply and completelyas Grotowsi '. The Laboratory Theatre, led by Grotowsiand Flaszen, was not theatre in its usual sense, butrather an institute for research into the domain of theat-rical art, and the art of the actor in particular. Its line of wor centered on the great classical tets(by Polis Romntic tors: Mickiewic, Sowcki,

and Caldern) whose function in Polishculture was close to myth. Grotowsi ' sperformances consisted of ' vivisections 'of those myths.Grotowsi emphasised the elimination of blocs rather than the accu-mulation of sills, naming this approach the via negativa. By meansof this ' negative path ' a human being could achieve ' a total act ', aboutwhich Grotowsi said: ' It is the act of laying oneself bare, of tearing

off the mas of daily life, of eteriorizing oneself. Not in order to "show oneselfoff " for that would be ehibitionism. It is a serious and solemn act of revelation. The actor must be prepared to be absolutely sincere. It is lie a step towards thesummit of the actor ' s organism in which consciousness and instinct are united '.The most advanced realisa-tions of this phenomenon wereis works wit Rysr Cielk

on The Constant Prince (1965)and with the whole ensembleon Apocalypsis cum fguris(1968/69).Grotowsi pushed the bounda-ries of theatre in the parath-

eatrical projects of the 1970s. There, the separation betweenactors and spectators vanished, creating a shared domain ofactive culture. The main premise of this phase of wor was asearch for the conditions in which a human being can act trulyn wit te wole self fllling is or er inivil, cretive

potential. In the late 1970s Grotowsi eplored ritual techniques connectedto various source traditions. Woring in his Theatre of Sourcesproject with an international team of practitioners, every memberof which was ' rooted in his native bacground related to traditionand culture ', Grotowsi aimed at eamining ' techniques, archaicor nascent, that bring us [those actively involved] bac to []

organic primary eperience of life. Eistence-presence '. His ap-proach in Theatre of Sources me Grotowski mongst te rst

to theorise the intersections between theatre and anthropology. From 1986 until his passing in 1999, Grotowsi dedicated himself to a researchthat came to be nown as ' Art as vehicle '. This research focuses mainly on ' actionsrelated to very ancient songs whichtraditionally served ritual purposesand so can have a direct impact on so to say the head, the heart andthe body of the doers, songs which

can allow the passage from a vital energy to a more subtle one '.Grotowsi further wrote, ' When I spea of [] Art as vehicle, I referto verticality. [] With verticality the point is not to renounce part ofour nature all should remain in its natural place: the body, the heart, the head, something that is "under our feet " and something that is

"over the head ". All lie a vertical line, and this verticality should beheld taut between organicity and the awareness. Awareness means the conscious-ness which is not lined to language (the machine for thining), but to Presence '.In 1996, Grotowsi changed the name of the Worcenter to The Worcenter of JerzyGrotowsi and Thomas Richards, acnowledging the unique importance of his collabo-rtion wit Ricrs. In tis nl prse of is life ' s reserc, Grotowski become

concerned with transmi ssion: ' The nature of my wor with Thomas Richards has the

character of " transmission"; to transmit to him that to which I have arrived in my life:the inner aspect of the wor '. Today, Richards leads the Worcenter, continuing and de-veloping its research. Mario Biagini, a ey member of the Worcenter since shortly afterits foundation, has been the Worcenter ' s Associate Director since 2003.Before the end of his life, JerzyGrotowsi traced the trajectory ofhis life and wor as Professor at theCollge de France, in a series of lec-tures entitled The ' organic line ' intheatre and in ritual(19971998).
