La antropologa cultural o antropologa social es la rama de laantropologaque centra su estudio en

el conocimiento delser humanopor medio de suscostumbres,relaciones parentales,estructuras

polticasyeconmicas,urbanismo, medios dealimentacin,salubridad,mitos,creenciasy relaciones de

losgrupos humanoscon elecosistema.

La concepcin dominante enOccidentehasta elsiglo XIXdistingua a lascivilizacionesdominantes de

los estadios inferiores de desarrollo de laevolucin culturalde las sociedades humanas: el estado

debarbarie(brbaros) y el desalvajismo(salvajesoindgenas, los pueblos perifricos o primitivos que

se consideraba vivan en "estado de naturaleza" omito del buen salvaje). Contra esta concepcin

dominante, la antropologa cultural sostiene, siguiendo elparadigmadelrelativismo cultural, que buenaparte de las experiencias y conceptos considerados naturales son en realidad

construcciones culturales que comprenden las reglas segn las cuales se clasifica la experiencia, se

reproduce esta clasificacin en sistemassimblicosy se conserva y difunde esta clasificacin.

Losseres humanos, comoanimales sociales, viven en grupos ms o menos organizados,

lassociedades humanas. Sus miembros comparten siempre formas decomportamientoque, tomadas

en conjunto, constituyen su cultura. Un debate intelectual muy antiguo (que data de al menos

laIlustracin) discute si cada sociedad humana posee su cultura propia, distinta en su integridad de

cualquier otra sociedad, y si los conceptos de civilizacin y cultura son asimilables o no.

La antropologa cultural incluye tambin el estudio de lareligin(ofenomenologa de la religin) como

un elemento comn a todas las culturas: elhecho religioso.

El antroplogo cultural estudia todas las culturas, ya sean de sociedades tribales o de naciones

civilizadas complejas. Examina todos los tipos de conducta, racional o irracional. Considera todos los

aspectos de una cultura, incluidos los recursos tcnicos y econmicos utilizados frente al medio natural,

los modos de relacin con otros hombres o las especiales experiencias religiosas y artsticas. No solo se

estudian las actividades correspondientes a los diversos aspectos, sino que revisten especial inters sus

relaciones recprocas, por ejemplo, la relacin entre la estructura de la familia y las fuerzas econmicas

o entre las prcticas religiosas y las agrupaciones sociales. Uno de los temas principales de la

antropologa cultural, por lo tanto, es la relacin entre los rasgos universales de la naturaleza humana y

la forma en que se plasma en culturas distintas. El estudio de las razones de las diferencias culturales

motivadas por razones ambientales o histricas, y de la organizacin de estas en sistemas globales

ha ocupado tambin buena parte de los esfuerzos de la disciplina.

Aunque hoy se considera a la antropologa social o cultural una subdisciplina de la antropologa,

histricamente procede de laetnologa, que se ocupa de recoger material que permita describir e

interpretar las distintas culturas. El estudio de la etnologa se origin en el siglo XIX, cuando estudiosos

e historiadores buscaron por primera vez proporcionar una interpretacin sistemtica de

losmitos,tradicionesycostumbresde los pueblos extraeuropeos recopiladas por exploradores ymisioneros; esta primera fase de la disciplina, desdeosamente denominada "antropologa de poltrona"

por las generaciones posteriores, estuvo caracterizada por la falta de contacto directo entre

investigadores e investigados, y por la dedicacin a problemticas predominantemente histricas y

genticas. Los tericos de esta primera generacin entre ellosJames FrazeryEdward Burnett Tylor

se ocuparon del problema de la difusin de los elementos culturales, de los mtodos de transmisin del

contenido cultural y de la elaboracin de soluciones alternativas a problemas tecnolgicos comunes. En

lnea con la filosofapositivistadominante en la teora de la ciencia de la poca, el consenso disciplinario

se inclin por suponer que las diferentes culturas pasaban por una serie homloga de etapas en su

evolucin, an sin tener necesariamente contacto entre s.

El pensamiento humano evolucion a travs de los aos as como las creencias religiosas crecieron y

se esparcieron por todo el mundo. Cuando se esparcen por ciertos lugares, si stas son aceptadas por

la sociedad, quedan instaladas creando as una nueva cultura. La cultura que va creciendo en esta

La antropologa cultural como disciplina academica[editar]

Laantropologa socialse gest enGran Bretaay se comenz a dictar bajo el nombre

deantropologaoetnologaen laUniversidad de Oxford, desde1884; en laUniversidad de Cambridge,

desde1900; y en laUniversidad de Londres, desde1908. La primera ctedra universitaria que llev

oficialmente el nombre de "antropologa social" fue la ctedra honoraria de SirJames Frazer, en

laUniversidad de Liverpool, en1908.

Antecedentes contemporneos[editar]A comienzos delsiglo XX, los trabajos deBronislaw Malinowskisupusieron una modificacin radical en

las estrategias de investigacin de la antropologa. An sin apartarse de una teora cientfica positivista,

Malinowski abord el estudio directo de los pueblos investigados mediante el trabajo de campo,

sosteniendo que los materiales recopilados por misioneros o legos introducan graves desviaciones y

sesgos para el estudio, al interpretar de manera incorrecta el sentido de muchas de las prcticas. La

metodologa desarrollada por Malinowski en sus investigaciones sobre los nativos de lasislas

Trobriand(Nueva Guinea) implicaba el traslado del investigador al hbitat de la cultura investigada y la

inmersin en sus propios hbitos comunitarios, en la llamadaobservacin participante.Vehementemente defendida por su autor y porFranz Boas, rpidamente se convirti en el mtodo

estndar de la disciplina. Uno de los resultados ms importantes obtenidos mediante el mtodo de la

observacin participante fue la constatacin de que hbitos o tradiciones de apariencia similar podan

cumplir funciones radicalmente diferentes en culturas distintas, obligando a estudiar detalladamente el

contexto y a prescindir de clasificaciones universales.

Escuelas[editar]

En el siglo XVI no es posible la mirada antropolgica porque la mirada hacia el otro est fuertemente

condicionada por las creencias que se tienen. En el siglo XVII al europeo le separa del no europeo la

ignorancia. El europeo es racional y el no europeo es el ignorante.

En elsiglo XVIII, y de la mano de laIlustracin, la concepcin europesta comenzara a relajarse, al

reconocerse otros pueblos como elchinoo eljaponscomo tambin civilizados. De hecho, la sociedad

y cultura china pasar a ser objeto de atencin preferente, siendo admirada por su estabilidad, orden y

antigedad. En este mismo siglo comenzarn a escribirse los primeros tratados de antropologa que

Dentro del todo que constituye un sistema sociocultural se pueden distinguir tres aspectos adaptativos:

1. laecologa, que se refiere al grado y modo deadaptacinde un sistema con su medio

ambiente;

2. laestructurasocial pues los sistemas socioculturales precisan de cierto

ordenamientoinstitucionalpara asegurar su funcionamiento.

3. laideologa, que hace referencia al conjunto de hbitos y caractersticas mentales destinadas a

ajustar a los individuos y grupos a las condiciones ecolgicas y estructurales de su vida

sociocultural.

El concepto cientfico de cultura[editar]

El concepto antropolgico de cultura represent una generalizacin considerable de la nocin tradicional

o vulgar de cultura, basada exclusivamente en las bellas artes y las humanidades. Sin embargo, a su

vez se qued estrecho para dar cuenta de los nuevos tipos de investigacin llevados a cabo no solo por

antroplogos, sino tambin por cientficos de diversas procedencias, como socilogos, bilogos,

etlogos, neurlogos e informticos. El descubrimiento de la cultura de los chimpancs porJane

Goodallde la reserva de Gombe (Tanzania),Jordi Sabater Pien Guinea Ecuatorial y C. y H. Boesch en

Costa de Marfil, entre otros, puso de manifiesto la necesidad de ampliar y precisar la definicin de

cultura. Adems, hay que establecer criterios operativos que permitan decidir hasta qu punto las

pautas de conducta observadas (en seres humanos y en otros animales) son naturales o culturales.

El concepto cientfico de cultura hizo uso desde el principio de ideas de la teora de la informacin, de la

nocin dememeintroducida porRichard Dawkins, de los mtodos matemticos desarrolladas en la

gentica de poblaciones por autores comoLuigi Luca Cavalli-Sforzay de los avances en la compresin

del cerebro y del aprendizaje. Diversos antroplogos, como William Durham, y filsofos, comoDaniel

DennettyJess Mostern, han contribuido decisivamente al desarrollo de la concepcin cientfica de la

cultura. Mostern define la cultura como la informacin transmitida por aprendizaje social entre animales

de la misma especie. Como tal, se contrapone a la naturaleza, es decir, a la informacin transmitida

genticamente. Si los memes son las unidades o trozos elementales de informacin adquirida, la cultura

actual de un individuo en un momento determinado sera el conjunto de los memes presentes en el

cerebro de ese individuo en ese momento. A su vez, la nocin vaga de cultura de un grupo social es

analizada por Mostern en varias nociones precisas distintas, definidas todas ellas en funcin de los

memes presentes en los cerebros de los miembros del grupo.

estudio, la Antropologa recurre a herramientas yconocimientosproducidos por lasciencias naturalesy

otras ciencias sociales. La aspiracin de la disciplina antropolgica es producir conocimiento sobre el

ser humano en diversas esferas, pero siempre como parte de unasociedad. De esta manera, intenta

abarcar tanto laevolucin biolgica de nuestra especie, el desarrollo y los modos de vida de pueblos

que han desaparecido, lasestructuras socialesde la actualidad y la diversidad de

expresionesculturalesylingsticasque caracterizan a lahumanidad.

Las facetas diversas del ser humano implicaron una especializacin de los campos de la Antropologa.

Cada uno de los campos de estudio del ser humano implic el desarrollo de disciplinas que actualmente

son consideradas como ciencias independientes, aunque mantienen constante dilogo entre ellas. Se

trata de laAntropologa fsica, laArqueologa, laLingsticay laAntropologa social. Con mucha

frecuencia, el trminoAntropologa slo se aplica a esta ltima, que a su vez se ha diversificado en

numerosas ramas, dependiendo de la orientacin terica, la materia de su estudio o bien, como

resultado de la interaccin entre la Antropologa social y otras disciplinas.

La Antropologa se constituy como disciplina independiente durante la segunda mitad delsiglo XIX.

Uno de los factores que favoreci su aparicin fue la difusin de lateora de la evolucin, que en el

campo de los estudios sobre la sociedad dio origen alevolucionismo social, entre cuyos principales

autores se encuentraHerbert Spencer. Los primeros antroplogos pensaban que as como las especies

evolucionaban deorganismossencillos a otros ms complejos, las sociedades y las culturas de los

humanos deban seguir el mismo proceso de evolucin hasta producir estructuras complejas como su

propia sociedad. Varios de los antroplogos pioneros eranabogadosde profesin, de modo que las

cuestiones jurdicas aparecieron frecuentemente como tema central de sus obras. A esta pocacorresponde el descubrimiento de lossistemas de parentescopor parte deLewis Henry Morgan.

Desde el final del siglo XIX el enfoque adoptado por los primeros antroplogos fue puesto en tela de

juicio por las siguientes generaciones. Despus de la crtica deFranz Boasa laantropologa

evolucionistadel siglo XIX, la mayor parte de las teoras producidas por los antroplogos de la primera

generacin se considera obsoleta. A partir de entonces, la Antropologa vio la aparicin de varias

corrientes durante el siglo XIX, entre ellas la escuelaculturalistade Estados Unidos al iniciar la centuria;

laEtnologafrancesa; elfuncionalismo estructural, elestructuralismo antropolgico, elprocesualismoo

laantropologa marxista.

La antropologa es, sobre todo, una ciencia integradora que estudia al hombre en el marco de

lasociedady cultura a las que pertenece, y, al mismo tiempo, como producto de stas. Se la puede

definir como la ciencia que se ocupa de estudiar el origen y desarrollo de toda la gama de la variabilidad

humana y los modos decomportamientossociales a travs del tiempo y el espacio; es decir, del

proceso biosocial de la existencia de la especie humana.

Fruto de la meticulosa investigacin de Sahagn es el Cdice Florentino. Se considera como antecedente de

Se atribuye al exploradorFranois Pronhaber sido quien uso por primera ocasin el

trmino antropologa.1Pron recogi en esa obra un conjunto de datos sobre losaborgenes de

Tasmania, que fueron casi exterminados en los aos que siguieron al paso de Pron por la isla. Sin

embargo, Pron no fue el primero ni el ms antiguo de quienes estaban interesados en la cuestin de la

diversidad humana y sus manifestaciones.

Algunos autores consideran a frayBernardino de Sahagncomo uno de los antecedentes ms notables

de laetnografa.2De la misma manera que otros misioneros del siglo XVI, Sahagn estaba preocupado

por las diversas maneras en que la religin de los indgenas podra confundirse con el cristianismo

recin implantado. En el afn de comprender mejor a los pueblosnahuasdel centro deNueva Espaa,

Sahagn investig de manera muy detallada la historia, las costumbres y las creencias de los nahuas

antes de la llegada de los espaoles. Para hacerlo tuvo que aprendernhuatl. Luego, con el apoyo de

algunos de susinformantes, organiz la informacin obtenida en una obra pensada para un pblico ms

o menos amplio. El resultado fue elCdice Florentino, de vital importancia en el conocimiento de la

civilizacinmesoamericanaprecolombina.3

Georges-Louis Leclerc, conde de Buffon, quien escribi Histoire Naturelle(1749) donde se enlazan las

ciencias naturales y la diversidad fsica de la especie humana (anatoma comparada) con la inquietudpor comprender la diversidad de las expresiones culturales de los pueblos.4De manera anloga,

algunos pensadores de laIlustracincomoMontesquieu,Rousseaue incluso el

matemticoD'Alembertabordaron la materia, y propusieron algunas hiptesis sobre el origen de las

relaciones sociales, las formas de gobierno y los temperamentos de las naciones.

intereses, desde lapaleontologadel cuaternario al folclore europeo, pasando por el estudio comparado

de los pueblos aborgenes. Fue por ello una rama de la Historia Natural y del historicismo cultural

alemn que se propuso el estudio cientfico de lahistoriade la diversidad humana. Tras la aparicin de

los modelosevolucionistasy el desarrollo delmtodo cientficoen las ciencias naturales, muchos

autores pensaron que los fenmenos histricos tambin seguiran pautas deducibles por observacin. El

desarrollo inicial de la antropologa comodisciplinams o menos autnoma del conjunto de las Ciencias

Naturales coincide con el auge del pensamiento ilustrado y posteriormente delpositivismoque elevaba

larazncomo una capacidad distintiva de los seres humanos. Su desarrollo se pudo vincular muy

pronto a los intereses delcolonialismoeuropeo derivado de laRevolucin industrial.

Por razones que tienen que ver con el proyecto de la New Republicnorteamericana, y sobre todo con el

problema de la gestin de los asuntos indios, la antropologa de campo empez a tener bases

profesionales enEstados Unidosen el ltimo tercio del s. XIX, a partir del Bureau of American

Ethnologyy de la Smithsonian Institution. El antroplogo alemnFranz Boas, inicialmente vinculado a

este tipo de tarea, institucionaliz acadmica y profesionalmente la Antropologa en Estados Unidos. En

laGran Bretaavictoriana,Edward Burnett Tylory posteriormente autores comoWilliam Riversy ms

tardeBronisaw MalinowskiyAlfred Reginald Radcliffe-Browndesarrollaron un modelo profesionalizado

de Antropologa acadmica. Lo mismo sucedi en Alemania antes de1918.

En todas las potencias coloniales de principios de siglo (salvo en Espaa) hay esbozos de

profesionalizacin de la Antropologa que no acabaron de cuajar hasta despus de la II Guerra Mundial.

En todos los pases occidentales se incorpor el modelo profesional de la Antropologa anglosajona. Poreste motivo, la mayor parte de la produccin de la Antropologa social o cultural antes de 1960 lo que

se conoce como modelo antropolgico clsico se basa en etnografas producidas

enAmrica,Asia,Oceanayfrica, pero con un peso muy inferior de Europa. La razn es que en el

continente europeo prevaleci una etnografa positivista, destinada a apuntalar un discurso sobre la

identidad nacional, tanto en los pases germnicos como en los escandinavos y los eslavos.

Histricamente hablando, el proyecto de Antropologa general se compona de cuatro ramas:

lalingstica, laarqueologa, laantropologa biolgicay laantropologa social, referida esta ltima

comoantropologa culturalo etnologa en algunos pases. Estas ltimas ponen especial nfasis en el

anlisis comparado de laculturatrmino sobre el que no existe consenso entre las corrientes

antropolgicas, que se realiza bsicamente por un proceso trifsico, que comprende, en primera

instancia, una investigacin de gabinete; en segundo lugar, una inmersin cultural que se conoce

comoetnografaotrabajo de campoy, por ltimo, el anlisis de los datos obtenidos mediante el trabajo

El modelo antropolgico clsico de la antropologa social fue abandonado en la segunda mitad delsiglo

XX. Actualmente los antroplogos trabajan prcticamente todos los mbitos de la cultura y la sociedad.

El objeto de estudio antropolgico[editar]

La materia de estudio de la Antropologa ha sido materia de debate desde el nacimiento de la disciplina,

aunque es comn a todas las posturas el compartir la preocupacin por producir conocimiento sobre el

ser humano. La manera en que se aborda la cuestin es lo que plantea el desacuerdo, porque la

materia puede abordarse desde diversos puntos de vista. Sin embargo, desde el inicio la configuracin

epistemolgica de la Antropologa consisti en la pregunta por elOtro. Esta es una cuestin central en

las ciencias y disciplinas antropolgicas que se va configurando desde el Renacimiento.5

Tras el desarrollo de diferentes tradiciones tericas en diversos pases, entr en debate cul era el

aspecto de la vida humana que corresponda estudiar a la antropologa. Para esa poca, los lingistas y

arquelogos ya haban definido sus propios campos de accin.Edward B. Tylor, en las primeras lneas

del captulo primero de su obraCultura primitiva, haba propuesto que el objeto era laculturao

civilizacin, entendida como un todo complejo que incluye las creencias, el arte, la moral, el derecho,

las costumbres y cualesquiera otros hbitos adquiridos por el hombre como miembro de una sociedad.

Esta propuesta est presente en todas las corrientes de la antropologa, ya sea que se declaren a favor

o en contra.

Sin embargo, a partir del debate se presenta un fenmeno de constante atomizacin en la disciplina, a

tal grado que para muchos autores por citar el ejemplo ms conocido, el estudio de la cultura sera

el campo de laantropologa cultural; el de lasestructuras socialessera facultad de laantropologa

socialpropiamente dicha. De esta suerte,Radcliffe-Brown(antroplogo social) consideraba como una

disciplina diferente (y errada, por lo dems) la que realizabanFranz Boasy sus alumnos (antroplogos

culturales). SegnClifford Geertz, el objeto de la antropologa es el estudio de la diversidad cultural.
