Throughouttheexhibition,weshallseeexamplesofthegreatrenaissancethattookplaceinthefieldofpublishing,bothinthetypographiccompositionofthepageandintheuseofphotomontage.Thattransformationwasspearheadedbytheartisticavant-gardemovements,whichfeltaneedtorepresentnew“signifiers”,newpoeticsuggestions,whichintheirturn“required”amoreappropriatemeansofexpression.AsMaurizioScudieroindicates,theythusbroke“notonlyrelationsfromtoptobottom,typographicinformandcharacter,butalsopagelineationsandtheorthogonalcharacterofthecompositionitself.”1Thistransformationwasmadepossiblebyanalliancebetweenartistsandgraphicdesigners,andbythecloseconnectionsofbothwiththepoeticandliterarycirclescharacteristicoftheperiod.

AftertheOctoberRevolutionof1917—whichmarkedadrasticchangeinthesocialandeconomicspheresofRussia—artists,writers,film-makersandphotographersparticipatedinreflectionanddebateonthesignificanceofartanditsroleinthephaseofdevelopmenttheSovietUnionwasthenundergoing.Intheearly1920s,someavant-gardeartistsinvolvedwithconstructivism,suchasAleksandrRodchenko,LiubovPopova,AleksandrVesninandVarvaraStepanova,decidedtoswitchfrompaintingtothedesignofindustrialobjectsinordertoconstructthenewSovietlifestyle.Theycreatedschoolsandworkshops,foundedassociations,andpublishedbooksandmagazines.Inshort,theyjoinedforcesinsupportoftheprocessofmodernisationandindustrialisationthatwastakingplaceinthecountry,impelledbytheideathattheywerecontributingtothetransformationofthenationandthecreationofanewman.
Towardstheendofthe1920s,artistsenjoyedconsiderablefreedomofexpression,andthiswasreflectedintheimmensecreativitytheydeployed.After1929,knowntoRussiansasthe“yearoftheGreatTurn”,thatfreedomofexpressionwaslargelycurtailed.ThiscoincidedwiththeinitiationbyStalin,whohadrisentopowerintheCommunistPartyin1928,ofsuchmeasuresastheforcedcollectivisationoftheSovietpeasantry,theFive-YearPlans,theresumption

ThedevelopmentofphotomontageasavisualmediumappliedbyRussianconstructivistsbothasaformalistandpoliticalmethodhasbeenbroadlydiscussedbyleadingscholarsoftheRussianavant-garde.Leavingasidethecomplexpre-historyofphotomontageasanindependentcreativemethod,theauthorshallfocusonsomeexamplesofbookdesignrevealingaspectsthatintroducedthemediuminthepracticesofthemostwell-knownRussianavant-gardeartists.
Theapplicationofphotomontageinbookdesignwasalogicalstepintheevolutionaryprogressionofconstructivism.Artistsinevitablyhadtoturnfromformalandnon-objectiveexperimentstovisuallyrecognisableimages.Gradually,photomontage,whichevolvedintandemwiththemodernisationofprintingpressesandwaseasytoreproduce,becamethemainstyleofillustrationanddesignofbooksandmagazines.1

Inhismostquotedmanifestoof1931,“PhotomontageasaNewTypeofAgitationalArt”,publishedinacollectionofarticlesbymembersofthe“October”group(1928-1932),GustavKlutsis,oneoftheleadingexponentsofthepoliticalphotomontage,wrote:

* Naturalism, like formalism, was a specific disparaging term used to refer to art work that did not correspond fully to the prescribed method of socialist realism. Formalism referred to formally experimental and non-realistic art, whereas naturalism referred to naturalistic art that was ideologically neutral or unclear. Indeed,asRolandBarthessorightlynoted,aphotographis“whollyballastedbythecontingencyofwhichitistheweightless,transparentenvelope”,6andthereforecannotclaimtoreflectwhatis“characteristic”and“typical”,or,asthetheoryofsocialistrealismwouldhaveit,to“reflectlifeinitsrevolutionarydevelopment”.Thisraisestheproblemofwhatcanbeconsideredafact.AleksandrRodchenko,protestingagainstthefact-basedapproach,arguedthatitwasnotthefactitselfthatwasimportant,butitsfunction:the“how”ratherthanthe“what”.Ashewrote:

Rodchenkobelievedthataphotographexpressedalreadyextantfacts;hebelievedthesefactsexistedbeforethephotograph.Itismuchmoreimportant,however,tounderstandthephotographitselfasafact.Whilethetyrannyofthevisibleisdirectedprimarilytowardstheaffirmationofphotography’smimeticnature,“socialistfacts”didnotactuallyexistintheirownrightbeforebeingrepresented—somethingalludedtoobliquelybyRodchenkohimself.Asheputsit,withoutprideandjoy,anewfactoryissimplyashotofabuilding,thereisconsequentlynothing“socialist”aboutit.
ThecentralconflictinthehistoryofSovietphotographyistheconflictbetweenthe“photo-picture”(foto-kartina)versusthe“photo-still”(foto-kadr).Aphoto-stillmaybethoughtofasthegazeofaneye,pureandsimple,whereasthephoto-pictureisanentirelanguage.Itcanbeapprehendedonseverallevelsatonce:theaesthetic(howtocaptureit)theideological(prideandjoy)andfinallythepolitical(socialistfacts).Inregardtotheselevelsofexperience,thephoto-stillisnomorethananauxiliarymethod.AsTupitsynhasshown,thecentralconflictbetween“Photo-StillversusPhoto-Picture”inSovietculturewasplayedoutinthefightfordominancebetweenphotomontageandfact-montage.8Tupistynregardsthedateof1932asadefiningmoment—amomentwhenfactographygavewaytoStalinist,myth-creatingimagesandmorenaturalcompositions.9By1939,inhisworkonthedesignofthecentralpavilionoftheAll-UnionAgriculturalExhibition(vskhv),ElLissitzkywastoreplacephoto-montagewithphoto-pictures.Bythistime,too,socialistrealistpictureshadbeguntotakeoverfromphotographyinussr in Construction.Nevertheless,photomontagewasstillstronglyinevidenceintheAll-UnionAgriculturalExhibition,andreviewersobjectedtoitspredominance,andtotheresulting“uniformity,whichcreatedapoorimpression”10.

Afirst,cursoryglanceattheannualvolumesofthejournalfromthe1930ssuggeststhatwearedealingwithaseriesofchangingvisualstrategies:atfirst,thejournalfeaturesunsophisticatedshotsofSovietconstruction(oftenbyanonymousphotographers);latertheroleofcaptionsbecomesmoreimportant,andthenphoto-picturesappear,andthephotographsarethematicallyarranged.Eventually,bytheendofthe1930s,thejournalhasbecomeastandardperiodicalwithwrittenarticles.Butwhenwelookatthejournalmoreclosely,itbecomesclearthatwearelookingatasimulatedvisualreality.Thisphotographyisnotareflectionofanything,asbehinditliesadifferentlanguagefromtheusualoneofphotographywhichdoesnotmerelyinvolvethetrainingofthephotographer’seyethroughtheselectionandmarshallingofimagesandchoiceofperspective,butatrainingincontextualisation,intheinterpretationoftheworldperceivedthroughtheeye.Thevisual
