In our lottery‑ and sweepstakes‑obsessed culture, it is common to ask ourselves or others what they would do if they won. In today’s first reading, Solomon certainly hits the jackpot. What prize could be greater than having God Almighty agree to give you whatever you ask for?

Out of all the things he could have asked for, Solomon chose to ask for understanding, and was rewarded with it. We would do well to wonder what we would ask for if God made us the same offer. Actually God does make us the same offer each and every day, by granting us another day of life, a bit of the earth’s goods, some gift or ability, some call to goodness, some portion of the divine will. Each of these is a “prize.” We should stop and examine what we are go-ing to do with our prize: keep it or use it selfishly, or put it at the service of the spread of the gospel? Copyright © J. S. En nuestra lotería –y en las muchas rifas de nuestra cultura– se tiene la costumbre de preguntarnos a nosotros mis-mos y de preguntarles a los demás qué haríamos si gana-

mos. En la primera lectura de hoy, Sa-lomón ciertamente se gana el premio ma-yor. ¿Qué premio podrá ser más grande que tener a Dios todopoderoso ofrecerte lo que quieras?

De todas las cosas que podemos pedir, Salomón escogió pedir sabiduría y le fue

concedida. ¿No sería bueno preguntarnos que pediríamos si Dios nos hiciera esa oferta? En realidad Dios nos hace esa misma oferta cada día, al darnos otro día de vida, un poco de los bienes de la tierra, algún don o talento, un lla-mado a la bondad, algo de la voluntad divina. Cada uno de esos bienes es un “premio”. Panhandlers at the Parish From time to time, especially when our community gathers for Sunday Mass, various persons come around looking for money. They usually have a con-vincing story of need. However, very often they are not true. In fact what they are doing is preying upon our Christian charity. If you are approached by some-one please let them know that we have a social out-reach ministry with our St. Vincent de Paul Society and/or that you donate to specific causes to help the poor and needy. You could also indicate that there are signs on our property that indicate that soliciting funds is not permitted.

Pordioseros en la Parroquia De vez en cuando, especialmente cuando nuestra comu-nidad se reúne para la Misa del domingo, varias personas vienen en busca de dinero. Deficit Reduction Fund Collection

Next weekend we will take up our monthly Deficit Reduc-tion Fund Collection (envelopes are in the mailed packets). Since February, we have made very good pro-gress in catching up on our deficit thanks to pa-rishioner’s generosity.

Unfortunately, the accompanying part of the February appeal – increasing one’s regular Sun-day offering – has not kept up with the initial spurt. Thus, we are once again getting into deficit spending each month. This is particularly true for our summer months – many parishioners are away while major bills come in (property insurance and medical bene-fits being the two of the biggest). If you have been away and, therefore, not made your regular contribution to the parish, remember supporting the parish is an ongoing com-mitment even when you’re not here as we continue to get bills to pay for running the parish so that it is still here when you return.

Colecta para la Reducción del Déficit

El próximo fin de semana tomaremos nuestra Colecta mensual para la Reducción del Déficit, (los sobres se encuentran en los paquetes en-

viados por correo). Gracias a la generosidad de los feligreses, desde febrero, hemos progresado notablemente tratando de resolver nuestro deficit.

Por desgracia, la parte acompañante de la apelación de fe-brero – el aumentar aparte la propia ofrenda dominical – no se ha mantenido al día con el impulso inicial. Por lo tanto, cada mes, una vez más, estamos incurriendo en gastos deficitarios. Esto es particularmente cierto para los meses de verano –

muchos de nuestros feligreses salen, mientras que los principales gastos siguen llegando (siendo los mas grandes, el seguro de la propiedad y los beneficios médicos que son los dos más grandes). Si ustedes han estado fuera y, por lo tanto, no han hecho su contribución periódica a la parro-quia, recuerde que el apoyo a la parroquia es un compromiso constante, incluso cuando no están aquí seguimos recibiendo cuentas por pagar para el funcionamiento de la parroquia por lo que todavía están aquí cuando regresan.

Blessings for the School Year!

Over the next two weeks, our parish’s students attending private and public schools in grades pre-Kindergarten through High School will be beginning the new school year. Our parish’s schoolteachers return this week. We wish all many blessings in the coming academic.

Drivers, remember to be more aware of our children as they cross our streets and driveways on their way to class!

With the start of the school year, we also begin this year’s Religious Education Program. Be sure to take note of the registration Sunday and when classes begin.

Prayer for a New School Year

May we explore together the territory of knowledge; May we learn together the mysteries of truth; May we share together the joy of friendship;

May we release in each other the spark of creativity; May we inspire others to follow Your call;

¡Bendiciones para el Ciclo Escolar!

Durante las próximas dos semanas, nuestros estudiantes que asisten a escuelas privadas o públicas en los grados de pre-Kinder hasta Se-cundaria, empezarán el nuevo ciclo escolar. Esta semana regresan los maestros de la escuela de San Cirilo. A todos les deseamos mu-chas bendiciones en el próximo año de aprendizaje y crecimiento.

This year, CTSO raised over $6.5 million dollars in tax credit contributions from individuals. St. Cyril was responsible for $285,698. You will help needy and deserving students receive a quality education. You are help-ing us keep Catholic Education available, accessible, and af-fordable to children who want the opportunity.

How you can help

As the new school year begins, many of our students’ families are thankful for the financial assistance available to them through CTSO making it possible for them to afford a Catholic education.

If you haven’t used this excellent avenue for keeping Catho-lic Schools as an option for education of our children, one way

you can do so is by signing up for a regular contribution either by a recurring charge to a credit card or by electronic funds trans-fer (EFT). You will receive a re-

ceipt from CTSO in January for the 2014 tax year and you may call the CTSO office anytime to request one to be sent to you.

Taxpayers who itemize deductions may claim all contribu-tions made 1 January through 31 December 2014 as a charita-ble donation deduction on their 2014 Federal tax return. Tax-payers also qualify for a dollar-for-dollar Arizona state tax credit (up to $2,106 for a couple filing jointly or $1,053 for a person filing single) for contributions up until 15 April 2015 which will be paid to them after the 2014 Arizona tax return is filed.

In addition to funds directed to us by parishioners and friends via CTSO, various corporations may also direct tax credit monies to the CTSO. Our school receives monies from these credits as well. Why not check with your company to see if they would be willing to match your donation and direct some of their taxes to our school?

All of what we receive goes toward financial aid for families wishing to send their children to our school, but who would not be able to do so with this help. Thank you to those parish-ioners and corporations who have directed their tax credits to our school!

“A Parish Gathers” Wednesday – 27 August – 7:00 to 9:00 PM

As the new school year begins, parish life prepares to go into full swing. To foster our community’s sense of being a “community of communities”, we are plan-ning an evening on which all parishioners are invited to come together to get to know one another and to share hopes and dreams for this coming year’s activities and projects. If you are the leader of an organization or min-istry group in the parish, please let your members know of this event as their partici-pation will be important. This gathering is not limited to mem-bers of organization and/or ministry groups, but to all parish-ioners. Please mark it on your calendar and plan to join in a session that will set the pace for our coming year.

Si usted es el líder de una organización o ministerio en la parroquia, por favor, informe a sus miembros acerca de este evento ya que su participación será

importante. Pero este encuentro no se limita a los miembros de grupos de organización y/o ministerio, sino a todos los feligreses. Por favor márquelo en su calendario y piense en unirse a una sesión que mar-cará la pauta para nuestro próximo año.

Parish Musician to Retire

Charmaine Piane-Dame (our Director of Liturgy and Music) will be retiring. Charmaine has been a part of our staff for the past two years. Each week she has been working be-hind the scenes in preparing our Sunday liturgies – schedul-ing ministers, putting together the Presiders’ and Lectors’ books, and communicating with the Lectors about particular selections for the Sunday Liturgy of the Word. On the week-ends, she has been the accompanist at the Saturday 5:00 PM Mass and the Sunday Masses at 1:00 PM (in Spanish), 3:00 PM (in Polish once a month) and 7:00 PM. (She has not been with us on Sunday mornings, as she has also been coordinating the music ministry and directing the choir at a Presbyterian Church on the northwest side of the city.)

We are very grateful for her service to our community, and wish her well as she makes this transition in her life. Her last weekend with us will be next weekend, 2–3 August.

Pianista de la Parroquia se Retira

Charmaine Piane-Dame (nuestra Directora de Liturgia y Música) se jubilará. Charmaine ha formado parte de nuestro personal en los últimos dos años. Cada semana, ella ha estado trabajando detrás de bambalinas en la preparación de nuestras liturgias dominicales – progrqamando a los ministros, juntando los libros de los cele-brantes y comunicándose con los Lectores sobre determinadas se-lecciones para la Liturgia de la Palabra de los domingos. Los fines de semana, ha sido la acompañante en la Misa del Sábado a las 5:00 PM y las misas del domingo a la 1:00 PM (en español), las 3:00 PM (en polaco una vez al mes) y de las 7:00 PM. (Ella no ha estado con nosotros el domingo por la mañana, ya que también ha estado coordinando el ministerio de la música y dirigiendo el coro de una iglesia presbiteriana en el lado noroeste de la ciudad.)

Estamos muy agradecidos por su servicio a nuestra comunidad, y le deseamos lo mejor mientras lleva a cabo esta transi-ción de su vida. Su último fin de semana con nosotros será el próximo fin de semana, 2 y 3 de agosto.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Gallup

The Civil Corporations of the Diocese of Gallup, Roman Catholic Church of the Diocese of Gallup and the bishop of the Roman Catholic Church of the Diocese of Gallup, which are commonly referred to as the Diocese of Gallup, have filed for reorganization in the United States Bank-ruptcy Court for the District of New Mexico. If you were abused or suffered injury by clergy or other persons working for the Diocese of Gallup or for a Catholic parish, school or mission within the territory of the Diocese of Gallup and you contend the Diocese of Gallup is responsible, you must act now to file your claim. The last day to file claims is 5:00 PM MDT on Mon-day, August 11, 1014.

The United States Bankruptcy Court has ordered that all persons claiming injury against the diocese of Gallup for acts of sexual abuse must file a claim on or before 5:00 PM Mountain Daylight Time on Monday, August 11, 2014.

You must complete a proof of claim if you contend that the Diocese of Gallup is responsible for any injury or other dam-ages caused to you because you claim that you were sexually abused, whether (1) by a priest, a nun a worker, a volunteer, an employee or other person or entity associated with the Dio-cese of Gallup, or associated with a parish, school or mission within the territory of the Diocese of Gallup; or (2) through acts that occurred beyond the territory of the Diocese of Gallup for which you claim the diocese of Gallup is responsible.

Adult Confirmation Classes this Fall

Once again this year, we will celebrate Confirmation in our parish at the end of November. In preparation for this, we will be offering a preparation series in English for adult Catholics (18 years or older) who were baptized and have received First Communion but have not been confirmed. If you haven’t been confirmed and would like to celebrate this sacrament, details are available from Fr. Edgar (elopez@stcyril.com or 795-1633 ext 111).

Youth Ministry needs volunteers

Since the resignation of Ms. Lisa Astrouski as our part-time

Youth Minister this past May, we have been considering

how to approach this part of our parish’s life. With our income continuing to under-

fund our expenses, we will not be hiring a Youth Minister

(even part time), so are in need of volunteers.

With the limitation of time at

the parish as a part-time minis-

ter, Lisa had folded in the Con-firmation preparation sessions

for high school students into the Youth Ministry program.

But, as she had noted upon resigning, Youth Ministry had become primarily Confirmation preparation. In light of that

comment, the decision was made to separate the Confir-

mation preparation (Confirmation I and II) from the Youth Ministry program.

At this time, we are working to put into place the

needed personnel for the Confirmation Prepa-ration Program and are looking into a possible

program for Youth Ministry in our parish.

Bea Anne Berg has volunteered to serve as the catechist who will continue the Confirma-

tion II preparation with those students who

will be preparing to celebrate this sacrament in November. We are in need of one to two

other volunteers to work with her – not only as a good ministry model, but a basic require-

ment of the diocesan Safe Environment pro-

gram for ministry with minors. (Please note that persons wishing to minister with minors

must complete the Safe Environment Compli-ance requirements which include a background and finger-

print check.)

In addition, we are in need of one or two volunteers who can serve as cate-

chists for the Confir-

mation I program.

El Ministerio de la Juventud necesita Voluntarios

Desde la renuncia de la Sra. Lisa Astrouski como nuestro Ministro

de la Juventud en mayo pasado, hemos estado considerando cómo

abordar esta parte de la vida de nuestra parroquia. Cuando nuestro ingreso continua con fondos insufi-

cientes para nuestros gastos, no po-demos contratar a un Ministro de la Ju-

ventud (incluso a tiempo parcial), por lo que estamos necesitando voluntarios.

Con la limitación de tiempo en la par-

roquia como ministro de tiempo parcial,

Lisa había incluido en las sesiones de preparación para la Confirmación para

estudiantes de secundaria en el pro-grama Pastoral Juvenil. Pero, como

había señalado al renunciar, el Ministerio de la Juventud se ha con-vertido principalmente en la preparación para la Confirmación. De-

bido a ese comentario, se tomó la decisión de separar la pre-

paración para la Confirmación (Confirmación I y II) del programa Pastoral Juvenil.

De momento, estamos trabajando para asignar el personal nece-

sario para el Programa de Preparación para la Confir-mación y estamos viendo un posible programa para el

Ministerio Juvenil de nuestra parroquia.

Bea Anne Berg se ha ofrecido para servir como cate-quista que continuará con la preparación para la Confir-

mación II con los estudiantes que se preparan para

celebrar este sacramento en noviembre. Estamos nece-sitando uno o dos voluntarios mas, para trabajar con

ella - no sólo como un buen modelo de ministerio, pero un requisito básico del programa diocesano de Ambi-

ente Seguro para el ministerio con menores de edad.

(Tenga en cuenta que las personas que desean traba-jar con menores de edad, deben completar los requisi-

tos de Cumplir con un Ambiente Seguro que incluyen una verificación de antecedentes y huellas digitales.)

necesitando de uno a dos voluntarios que

puedan servir como

catequistas para el programa de Confirma-

ción I.
