LIVING GOD’S COMMANDS The first reading forms part of Moses’ farewell discourse, a call to the people to return to God. It is not a legalistic summons; rather, it is an appeal to heart and soul. It outlines a command that is not impossible to follow, or too difficult to under-take, or too expensive. Look into your hearts, says Moses; there you will find what to do. Paul sees Jesus Christ as the image of God, the agent of creation and preservation. We sense, in his words, things profound: “dominions or principalities or powers.” But in the midst of that, Paul keeps his atten-tion on Jesus Christ, head of the church. It is in Christ that we find fullness and reconciliation—in the blood of the cross. Luke’s Gospel illustrates the double commandment of love with the story of the Good Samaritan. The story is a radical one, for it comes to focus on the question of who my “neighbor” is. That neighbor is not identified with any group, but rather by the scope of our compassion. Copyright © J. S. VIVIR LOS MANDAMIENTOS DE DIOS La primera lectura forma parte del discurso de despe-dida de Moisés, un llamado al pueblo a volver a Dios. No es un mandato legalista sino más bien un ruego al corazón y al alma. Esboza un mandamiento que no es imposible seguir ni muy difícil de cumplir, ni muy cos-

toso. Miren en sus corazón, dice Moisés; y sabrán que hacer. Pablo ve a Jesucristo como la imagen de Dios, el agente de la creación y de la preservación. Detectamos, en sus palabras, cosas profundas: “gobiernos, autorida-des, poderes y fuerzas sobrenaturales”. Pero en medio de todo esto, Pablo mantiene su atención en Jesucristo, ca-beza de la Iglesia. Es en Cristo que encontramos satisfac-ción y reconciliación –por su sangre derramada en la cruz. El Evangelio de Lucas ilustra el doble mandamiento del amor con la historia del Buen Samaritano. This is the broadest of all the formation programs

that the Office of Hispanic Ministry offers in Span-ish at the diocesan level. The program offers op-

portunities for the spiritual development of each person. At the same time it provides the knowledge and

skills for many pastoral ministries. It provides a general edu-cation for ministry, which covers a broad scale of evangeli-

zation areas such as: Spiritual Formation, Scripture, Princi-

ples of Theology, Liturgy and Sacraments, Christian Moral-ity, and Methodology. This course also strives to answer

la Sagrada Comunión y Asistentes en el Altar, para todas

las Misas del fin de semana. Todos los Ministros deben tener una entrevista y com-

pletar el Entrenamiento de Acatamiento como parte de sus preparativos. Ya se están planeando las sesiones de entre-

namiento para cada ministerio. Por favor consideren el ser-

vir en uno de estos ministerios en la Misa a la que ustedes asisten regularmente. Próximamente avisaremos sobre las

Liturgical Ministers Needed

We are in need of Ushers (greeters and collection tak-ers), Lectors (persons who proclaim the scripture

readings), Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion and Altar Severs at all of our weekend Masses. We try

to assign ministers to the Mass of their choice so as to

make serving in these Liturgical Ministries an easy thing to do within one’s schedule.

To become a Liturgical Minister, one must have an inter-view and complete the Safe Environment Compliance Training

as a part of their preparations. Sessions for training to do the

particular ministry are being planned. To volunteer, please contact Charmaine Piane-Dame (our Director of Liturgy and

Music) at the Parish Office - 795-1633, xt 110.

New Eagle Scout in our Parish! We’re so proud to announce that Dylan Bohler has achieved Eagle Scout status. He planned and supervised the digging out

a 115 foot drainage ditch at Far Horizon’s Mobile Home Com-munity – home to many parish households.

The purpose of an Eagle Scout project is for the scout to

demonstrate leadership skills in overseeing an approved pro-ject. Dylan did this by getting appropriate professional advice,

communicating with nearby tenants in the community and guiding Troop members, friends and family to complete the

project.

Dylan and his family thank everyone involved with helping of this service project. Dylan went in

front of the Eagle Board of Review on June 12, 2013 who approved his achievement of Eagle

Scout status. Of all of the boys who join Boy Scouting, only 3% achieve this honored rank.

¡Un Nuevo Eagle Scout en nuestra Parroquia!

Con mucho orgullo anunciamos que Dylan Bohler logró el estatus de Eagle Scout. El planeó y supervisó la excavación de una zanja de 115 pies en la Comunidad móvil Far Hori-zons – un hogar para muchos de nuestros parroquianos. El propósito de un proyecto Eagle Scout es que el scout demuestre liderazgo al supervisar un proyecto ya aprobado. Dylan lo hizo obteniendo la asesoría profesional apropiada, comunicándose con vecinos cercanos en la comunidad y guiando a los miembros de la Tropa, amigos y familiares para completar el proyecto. Dylan y su familia agradecen a todos los involucrados en la ayuda para este proyecto de servicio. Tucson Samaritans offer humanitarian aide Each year, 180 human remains of those who die from dehydration are found in our desert. Tucson Samaritans work to prevent suffering and death in the desert. You are invited to join in this humani-tarian effort in one or both of the following ways:

Donate gallon bottles of water (bringing them to our church during the month of July).

Join these Samaritans on a desert trip, carry-ing water, food, and medicine while looking for people in distress. A training class is offered on the first Sunday of each month at Southside Presbyterian Church (317 W. 23rd Street). No RSVP is needed: just show up! Questions? Carmelites celebrate two special feasts

this week.

The feasts of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel (celebrated on July 16), and Elijah

the Prophet (celebrated on July 20), recall the foundation of our Carmelite

Order in the 12th century on Mt. Carmel in the Holy Land. This

13 mile long ridge is known for its cover of flower blossoms, flowering shrubs, and fragrant herbs. Its

Hebrew name “Karm-El” means “garden of God”. Caves on the mountains often provided shelter for

hermits through the ages, and is where Elijah and

Elisha took refuge [1 Kings 18:19, 2 Kings 2:25].

St. Berthold, the first of the Latin Hermits on Mt.

Carmel, may have been a crusader or a pilgrim to

the area (perhaps to visit the cave of Elijah). Tradition says that he came from

southern France but when venturing in the Holy Land he encountered fierce soldiers.

After a vision of Christ, he went to Mt. Car-mel and built a small chapel there. Soon he

was joined by other hermits who all lived

there in community in imitation of Elijah. After his death, St. Brocard became leader of

the hermits eventually leading to the formal establishment of the Order of Carmelites in

the 12th century.

In Carmelite tradition, Mt. Carmel had

been a place devoted to a hermetical-style of prayer since the time of Elijah. A monastery was built there and it was dedi-

cated to the Virgin Mary, as “Stella Maris” (Star of the Sea) – a medieval title describing Mary shining like a star over the sea

leading the faithful to her Son and to the fruit-bearing life God

provides now and eternally.

According to Carmelite tradition, the scapular was given in a vision by the Virgin Mary to St. Simon Stock, living in England

in the 13th century. On July 16, 1251, he prayed to Mary that his order could be saved from its oppression. She appeared

with the scapular in hand, and told him: "Take, beloved son,

this scapular of thy order as a badge of my confraternity and for thee and all Carmelites a special sign of grace.”

Esta semana los Carmelitas festejan 2 festividades importantes

Las festividades de Nuestra Señora del Carmen (el 16 de julio) y Elías el Profeta (el 20 de julio), recuerdan la fundación de

nuestra Orden Carmelita en el siglo 12 en el Monte Carmelo de Tierra Santa. Esta cresta que mide 13 millas, es reconocida por

que está cubierta de flores, arbustos en flor y fragantes hier-

bas. Su nombre en hebreo es “Karm-El” que quiere decir “jardín de Dios”. Las cuevas en las montañas proporcionaron a

través de los años, refugio a los ermitaños y es donde se refugiaron Elías y Elisa [1 Kings 18:19, 2 Kings 2:25].

San Bertoldo, el primer ermita latino en el Monte Carmelo, puede haber sido un cruzado

o un peregrino para el área (quizá para visi-tar la cueva de Elías). La tradición cuenta

que el vino del sur de Francia, pero cuando

Desde el tiempo de Elías, como tradición Carmelita, el Monte Carmelo había sido un lugar dedicado al estilo hermético de

2013 to a special Mass which will include a Renewal of Vows on Sunday, September 29, 2013 at 2:30 pm at St.

Augustine Cathedral 192 S. Stone Ave. in downtown Tuc-son.
