NEWS IN BRIEF

CommentValeria Indacochea, Teacher

Time and again we hear we should not just teach a language, but also the culture that lies beneath. Yeah, we all agree andnod. But, how easy is it really? How possible is it to teachsomething you haven't actually been in touch with? Some ofus have been lucky enough to travel and see things first hand, but the majority has to rely on what others say.

That's why I want to thank the BRITÁNICO and our TTT foroffering this kind of workshop. Two very endearing tutors

took us by the hand and walked us around more than just"British culture". Through their eyes, life experiences and verywell selected material, we saw Britain with its multi-culturalshades, its people and how they see the world and themselves, its contradictions and so much more.

One last thought: We never stop learning. And learning likethis is so much fun!

Not just a good experience…but a dream come trueLuis Castillo

When I was in the car with myparents after the awardceremony, my mother lookedat me and asked me: “How didyou feel when you were upthere, when they said that youwere going to London?” Thequestion seemed so easy atthat time to answer that I justsaid, “happy”. However, afterdays of thinking about that same question, I have to admitthat the answer isn’t that simple.

I remember the first class at BRITÁNICO. I may have been only9 years old when my mother woke me up on a Saturdaymorning and said: “Hurry! You’ll be late for your Englishclasses”. I felt extremely annoyed, because it was a beautifulSaturday morning and I had to go to study English. I arrivedto the Language Centre in Miraflores, and ran up the stairsto my classroom. My first class was pretty difficult, many of

the essential things taught there were topics that I had neverseen before in my life.

The class was about to finish and I was having the idea ofgiving up, I would never come back to BRITÁNICO, it was justtoo difficult. However, when I was walking out of the room, the teacher gave something to me that changed all that. Shegave me a magazine, in which the cover page talked abouta student who had won a scholarship to London. I read thearticle with lots of interest and imagined myself in that farawaycountry, being in a whole new place. I imagined myselfstanding in London with a book in my right hand and a bagin my left. I was walking through the traffic and I was smiling, smiling like never before. Suddenly, a voice took me out ofmy dreams. It was my mother, who had come to pick me up.I was sad to have been taken out of my fantasies, but Ipromised something to myself, that I would do everythingthat I could to make that dream come true.

Now, after lots of bad and good experiences, after hours ofeffort and fun as well, the dream that I had 5 years ago iscoming true. I have to thank every single person who helpedme through my “adventure”. I thank the BRITÁNICO for givingme this opportunity of a lifetime. And now, I can finally answerthe question that my mother asked me weeks ago. If sheasked me now, “How did you feel when you were up there, when they said that you were going to London?” I wouldanswer, “I felt that a dream had come true”.

A wonderful opportunity…Francesca Ferreccio

When I received my FCE resultsand realised I had got an A, Ijust couldn't believe it. Smilingand thanking God were thef i rst th ings I d id; andstraightaway the desired ideaof winning the scholarshipcame to my mind. Months later, the news I had been chosen topart ic ipate came in anenvelope.

At the ceremony, the seven of us were standing at the front, waiting for the result. There, the unexpected happened: weall received the longed for scholarship! When I heard theannouncement I wanted to jump and scream with happinessand hug everybody. After everything finished, my friends andfamily congratulated me; I hugged my parents so deeplybecause half of this was their effort.

Finally I want to thank the BRITÁNICO for this wonderfulopportunity they are giving me and making one of my dreamsreal: living in London.

Jeremy Harmer presentedcertificates to our ELT Students

Gina Vílchez, Teacher

We would like to share with you some comments from ouroutgoing ELT students:

“Honestly, the first time I heard the name of Jeremy Harmerwas when the ELT course started, and at that moment I didnot have an idea of how important his name would becomethrough the entire course.

During the presentation of certificates, I learnt that Mr. Harmerwas the kindest and the most talkative human being in theworld. He made the lecture very entertaining and dynamic, and showed all the audience why his book is the most reliableone - everything he wrote there is everything he does in reallife!

Definitively, it was one of the greatest moments in my entirelife!”

María Tejada Oré, Teacher

“In this five month-course I have had one of my bestexperiences, I have also shared nice moments with myclassmates and the icing on the cake was meeting Mr. JeremyHarmer, the author of our course book.

It was so enriching having a talk with Jeremy Harmer, whoalso gave us our certificates.

I have already put things into practice with my students and, thanks to the ERC, I can continue with my self-development.

Thanks, BRITÁNICO”.

ELT students and their tutors: Tindara Nastasi and Judith Fuertes.

On May 29th we had the pleasure of havingthe visit of Jeremy Harmer. As you may know,Mr. Harmer is a very well known methodologywriter and author of the book “HOW TOTEACH ENGLISH”, which we use in our EnglishLanguage Teaching (ELT) course.

Mr. Harmer presented the certificates to thefirst group of BRITÁNICO ELT students whohad successfully completed the course withthe new edition of his book. Congratulationsto everyone!

Our next ELT Course starts on July 2nd.

Comments

Rationale• the range of text types, sources and task focuses in the paper is widened by the addition of themed texts in Part 1.• currently there are two matching tasks with some similarities, so Part 1’s matching task is replaced by the themed texts.

ACADEMIC NEWS

From 7 to 11 April 2008, two BRITÁNICO teachers weresponsored by the ACPB and Pearson Education to attend theIATEFL Conference (International Association of Teachers ofEnglish as a Foreign Language) which was held at the Universityof Exeter in the UK.

The two teachers selected on this occasion were MARISOLBOJORQUEZ from the Surco centre and SVETLANASHESTAKOVA from Los Jardines centre. Marisol joined theBRITÁNICO in 2001 and has Cambridge CAE and CambridgeICELT; Lana joined the BRITÁNICO in 2002 and also hasCambridge CAE and Cambridge ICELT.

CommentsMarisol Bojorquez, TeacherStonehenge, BuckinghamPalace, the Houses ofParliament, Oxford Street,Piccadilly Circus, “Fish andChips” and many other well-known places and items haveintrinsically formed part ofmy life for quite a long timesince I started being incontact with English at the

age of 8, more specificallywhen I came to the BRITÁNICO as a 15-year-old student, andthen as a teacher more than seven years ago.

Therefore, you can imagine the overwhelming excitement Ifelt when last January I was told that I was going to be ableto see all those places that I had previously only visualizedtime and time again in my mind, and that I was going totaste the food that in my imagination I had already triedthousands of times before.

Thanks to Pearson and the BRITÁNICO, I was one of the twoteachers invited to attend the IATEFL conference in Exeterfrom the 7th to the 11th of April this year. Personally andprofessionally, this experience was delightful and enriching. We had the opportunity to share exquisite conversations withpeople who have been working in the field of Education fordecades and who have had an indescribable number ofteaching experiences from all over the world. As soon as Iwas back, I wanted to share everything I heard and saw there, and to put into practice everything I had learnt.

The second week we combined our morning classes at aprestigious language school with afternoon sightseeing tosome of the best-known tourist attractions in London. Evennow, I sometimes find myself recalling some moments inLondon, such as walking around Trafalgar Square orcontemplating the beauty of the paintings at the NationalGallery.

I am sure this experience, as well as the enormous gratitudeto Pearson and especially to the BRITÁNICO, will be with mefor a long, long time. Thanks for such an unforgettableexperience.

Svetlana Shestakova, TeacherLooking back on my trip to England, I must admit it was noteasy for me to make up my mind what to write about. That’swhy I simply decided to take it step by step and start fromthe very beginning. So here I am, back to Exeter, a town in the south of England, situated on rolling green hills you have to walk up and downall the time. I enjoyed every single step I took because itsnarrow streets, small souvenir shops and houses are justcharming!

The annual international IATEFL conference on English LanguageTeaching I attended there was a dream: lots of famouspresenters I had never thought of seeing in person andparticipants from all over the world! The second week of my trip was spent in London in searchof small bits of culture, language and all those tiny pieces ofthe flamboyant mosaic of the great city. My mornings weredevoted to International House - a language school - whereI had access not only to the living and changing everydayEnglish, but also to colloquial expressions it features at thisvery moment, everything wrapped in the cultural aspect.

And my afternoons and evenings? Being an art-gallerywanderer, I spent two (oh so short!) days in front of theprecious paintings in the National Art Gallery, absorbed indetails, trying to imprint them in my memory forever!Stonehenge was another magnet that gave me that impossible-to-describe overwhelming sensation. I think it was a mixtureof the strong wind, the clouds, the smell of the earth and thenostalgic atmosphere. In a word, sacred.

Stratford-upon-Avon, on the other hand, was like a fairy tale,a perfect blend of ancient houses, spring time and gardensfull of tulips of unimaginable colours.

He is currently IATEFL’s Vice-President and next yearhe will become its President. Dr. Puchta talked about howsuccess in learning a foreign language depends less onmaterials, techniques and linguistic analyses and more onwhat goes on inside and between the people in the classroom.

There was also Looe, a small town by the sea, where I triedfish and chips for the first time sitting in a small harbour, surrounded by seagulls, big, fat and cheeky, that look straightin your eyes and beg for food. An English friend of mine calledthem 'our local mafia'.

Even though these words cannot express everything, I hopethey capture the unforgettable spirit of England.

What my mother means to meMargarita Céspedes , Student

If I had to say what my mother means to me, I would have to spend all mylife talking about her.I think when God created mothers, He did His best with mine. When I was a baby, my mother was the warm blanket that kept me warm. When I became a child, she was the sweet doctor who healed my pains. The years passed and I started my adolescence. My mother taught me how to walk like a lady and get the attention of boys.In my youth, her advice was the best gift for me.I got married, became a mother and she had answers for all the questions or doubts I had.I wonder what I would have done without her.She always was, has been and will be the shiniest light in the dark.I love her and I thank God for having her in my life.

disfrutaron ampliamente.
