Like a lot of people, I thought that the British were cold;luckily I was wrong. Everywhere I went they were warm,friendly and very polite which made me enjoy my trip evenmore.

I also had the opportunity of going to the places I had onlyseen in pictures, like the Houses of Parliament (and Big Ben),Tower Bridge, Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle-whichwas just amazing!

All I have left to say is a huge “thank you” to the BRITÁNICOfor letting me have this experience that I am going to treasuremy entire life.

My trip to London has been the best experience of my life sofar. Looking back, I find every single day of my journey –fromthe very beginning when I entered the plane- an adventure.I remember how I used to go crazy with my camera the firstdays, taking pictures of every detail. I recall clearly the firsttime I saw the Tower of London and Tower Bridge, or theday I went to St Paul’s Cathedral and I was able to see theentire city from the top of its dome. It was just incredible.

Just the beginningAndrea Fernández, Winner of the Scholarship for Excellence 2008-I

Travelling to London was definitely the best experience I have ever had. Livingthere for a month taught me a lot. I had the opportunity to improve my Englishin such an amazing city full of new things for me, different ways of living andamazing people from all over the world and their cultures. I didn’t learn just whenI went to classes, I learnt at every moment of the day, from the moment I arrivedat the airport. I’m sure I will never forget this experience because now I knowthat there is a huge and unknown world out there and I want to get to know itas much as possible. This trip was just the beginning. So, I must really thank theBRITÁNICO because thanks to them I have started the life I want to have.

I fell in love not only with London’sbreathtaking landmarks, but with the

sight of its traditional pubs, its old streets,the order, the double-decker buses and thetube. With fondness, I remember as well allthe tube stations with different designs ontheir walls, the buskers playing classical music,and my walks along the Thames.

With regard to my experience with thelanguage, I must say I felt really proud whenI realised that everything I had learnt atBRITÁNICO was so useful that I couldcommunicate with people from countries sodifferent to mine like Russia, Korea, Serbiaand Switzerland. It was great to talk aboutmany topics with the students I met atInternational House, but most of all, talkingabout our cultures.

But studying there for a month was also anopportunity to make really good friends whoI still keep in touch with. I specially rememberLaetitia, a Swiss girl who used to wander

around London with me and Emma and Karol,my Peruvian classmates who also won thescholarship.

What is more, I also made very good Englishfriends, particularly the Banks, my host family.I will never forget David, my landlord, whoused to entertain me with his childhoodmemories of World War II. In the same way,I will remember Shelagh, his sweet Irish wife,and Anna Marie, his eccentric daughter, apiano player who used to wear a differentflower in her hair every day.

It is for all these memories and wonderfulexperiences that I am and will be foreverdeeply grateful to the BRITÁNICO, for beingthe institution which made my dream cometrue. Lastly, I would like to thank Narda Noel,my advanced teacher who made my Englishlearning a great experience at BRITÁNICO LosJardines, the branch where I started andfinished my studies and which I will alwaysbe very fond of.

Trip to the UKComo parte del programa de capacitación continua 2008, Jorge Ramos, profesordel centro de Lima y Juan Allauca, profesor del centro de San Borja, viajaron alReino Unido y nos comentan sobre esta provechosa experiencia:

Complete FirstCertificate para laFase AvanzadaA partir de enero del 2009 se iniciará laintroducción de un nuevo texto para nuestrafase avanzada: Complete First Certificate deCambridge University Press. Esto responde alconstante interés por ofrecer a nuestrosalumnos los materiales más actualizados paraayudarlos en su proceso de aprendizaje yporque se han rea l izado a lgunasmodificaciones en el examen FCE.

Como en todos nuestros procesos de cambiode textos, la introducción será progresiva,empezando en enero con AD1, febrero AD1y AD2, y así sucesivamente.

Todos los alumnos que empezaron a estudiarcon el texto FCE EXPERT podrán utilizar elmismo texto hasta finalizar la Fase Avanzada,siempre y cuando no suspendan sus estudiosen los próximos meses. Si lo interrumpieseny deseen reingresar, podrán continuar con elmismo texto sólo si en ese momento se dictael ciclo correspondiente con el mismo texto.De no ser así, tendrá que continuar sus estudiosusando el nuevo material.

An Unforgettable ExperienceJorge Ramos, Lima Teacher

In August 2008, the BRITÁNICO gave me the opportunity of attending two coursesin the United Kingdom. I attended a workshop in Oxford, at Exeter College anda course in Cambridge, at the Bell International School. An unforgettable experiencesince I had the opportunity to have great and famous tutors and nice partnersfrom all over the world.

I am really eager to share this wonderful experience with my colleagues and mystudents and to enrich my classes with this marvellous experience.

I will never forget these incredible days. For example people being so kind tostrangers and eager to help you as soon as they noticed you needed anything...Not only people telling you “after you” with smiles on their faces and enjoyingbeing so polite.

Cosmopolitan London, beautiful and ancient Oxford, musical Liverpool and greenand flowered Cambridge will for sure always be in my mind and in my heart.

ELT Course News

The group of students who started theELT in July are now finishing the course.During the course, they had the chanceto learn from their tutors and from eachother, put into practice what they learntin their two Teaching Practices with realstudents and also attend three workshopsgiven by senior teachers and members ofthe academic staff:

■ ELT2 : Teaching Grammar in aCommunicative Way by Tindara Nastasi(ELT Tutor).

■ ELT3: Giving Instructions by LilianaBurga (Academic Coordinator).

■ ELT4: Teaching English with Technologyby Gustavo Sánchez Piérola (AcademicCoordinator).

We want to congratulate them for theirhard work and effort during these fivemonths.

The next ELT course will start in January2009. The requirements are:

· Be at least 18 years old at the moment of registration.

· Presentation of FCE Certificate orStatement of Result issued byCambridge University. People who donot hold the certificate will have to sitan exam to confirm their level ofEnglish.

· Oral Interview.

First of all, I would like to say thankyou to the BRITÁNICO from the bottomof my heart for this absolutely uniqueopportunity to go to England to studyat the two of the most prestigiousuniversities in the world: Oxford andCambridge.

When I was told that a group ofcolleagues and I would attend severalcourses in England, I was amazed andcould not believe my ears. As dayspassed by, I got used to the idea ofsetting off for an unforgettableexperience.

When I arrived in England I had mixedfeelings; my nearest and dearestremained in Peru but I had come tobroaden my mind academically and

culturally.

The days in both cities were amazing, observing antique buildings and bucoliclandscapes, participating in productive workshops and lectures, and getting toknow approachable tutors and obliging people, all of whom will always be in mymemory.

I believe I have developed as a person and professional. I have also learnt animportant lesson: Once the barriers of language disappear, we all become citizensof the world.

ACTIVIDADES EXTRACURRICULARES

Cumplimos otro mes más de ofrecernuestro atractivo e interesante programade artes manuales. Sin embargo, nodeja de sorprendernos el entusiasmocon que participan nuestros estudiantes,tanto aquellos que acuden por primeravez como los que, conocedores delprograma, esperan con alegría nuestravisita.

Iniciamos las actividades en el centrode Miraflores, donde se ofreció unasesión de bisutería y los alumnosaprendieron a trabajar con diversasherramientas de joyería un multicolorllavero que fue del total agrado de cadauno de ellos. En San Borja tuvimos unadulce tarea, allí preparamos el postre

tiramisú: entre aromas de café y vainillalos participantes confeccionaron ydegustaron esta delicada golosina. Enuna animada clase con globos en Surco,nos dedicamos a formar figuras, estavez se trató de una graciosa y coloridamariposa que seguro pondrá el toquede humor en nuestras reuniones. EnSan Isidro presentamos un taller deSensibilización a la pintura artística,donde al principio el alumnado pintócon vacilación para luego hacerlo conseguridad e imprimirle su propio selloa sus trabajos; sin duda fue una grataexperiencia. Finalmente, en Los Jardinesnos preparamos para la temporadanavideña y le aplicamos color a unsimpático “oso cerámico”, lo que

demostró la destreza recién adquiridade los alumnos con el pincel, al producirbellas piezas.

Saludamos la asistencia del alumnadoen nuestras jornadas de artes manualesy los invitamos a participar de lassiguientes que serán dedicadas a lacampaña navideña.

Del Día de la Canción Criolla a Halloween:“Karaokeando”Patricia Silva, Subjefa del centro de San Isidro

El 27 de octubre fue un día especial y de celebraciones por partidadoble, pues no sólo nos reunimos en la sala de profesores para celebrarlos cumpleaños del mes, sino que también celebramos el Día de laCanción Criolla (una de las tradiciones culturales del Perú que data demucho tiempo atrás) y Halloween, pero al estilo de un karaoke interno.

En los horarios de la mañana y la tarde pudimos entonar nuestrascanciones preferidas, ellas variaron entre Alma, corazón y vida y temasde los años setenta y ochenta en inglés. Los ánimos y entusiasmo seincrementaron tanto que se propuso una reunión para celebrar Halloweenel día 31 de octubre, donde tuvimos la oportunidad de seleccionarnuestros mejores disfraces.

En esta actividad ellos no solamente investigarony aprendieron algo más sobre el Reino Unido, sino tambiénfue una oportunidad para utilizar el idioma inglés de unamanera ágil y divertida, a través de los trabajos grupales.

I can still remember my first class at BRITÁNICO. Although it was Intermediate01, my nerves were on edge, because I hadn’t studied in another institute before,I just knew what I learnt at school. At first, I was extremely delighted, everyonewas friendly and I really appreciated that. People here were so kind that I madelots of good friends, who were always very supportive, including a lot of fabulousteachers.

Now, that I’m in Advanced 06, I feel extremelygrateful to all of them, those who helped meto improve my English from the very beginningand I’d like to encourage everyone to finishyour studies at the BRITÁNICO. This memorable journeybegan one day inDecember 1998 when Ireceived a call saying“Welcome to BRITÁNICOSan Miguel”. I had taughtEnglish before but I hadno idea how much I wasabout to learn. Over thepast 10 years, the BRITÁNICO has given methe opportunity to grow in my career as ateacher and develop in ways that otherorganizations would not offer such asattending and giving workshops, participatingand being a presenter at the BRITÁNICOAnnual Teachers’ Convention, sittinginternational exams and also getting the ICELTcertification.

For me, teaching English is a journey that isan unobtainable quest for perfection, thatnevertheless makes me stronger as I pursuewhat I need to know and need to be able todo in order to reach my students.

Being a teacher is rewarding and also fun asnot only do my students learn from me, butI also learn a lot from them. Thank you all foryour valuable contributions in each class. Oneof my favourite recurring moments is whenI see the light dawn in a student's eyes as heor she finally understands something believedto be beyond comprehension.

En San Miguel, como en todosnuestros centros, sabemos que elidioma inglés se ha convertido pormérito propio en la herramientaindiscutible de la comunicacióninternacional. Aprender inglés nosólo sirve para cumplir con lasdemandas que impone la

sociedad, sino que incrementa nuestras habilidades de comunicación, quesumadas a nuestras demás capacidades, nos permiten aspirar a la optimizaciónde nuestra calidad de vida. ¿QUÉ PASA EN LOS CENTROS?

Siempre…■ Habla en inglés, incluso cuando pienses que

puedes cometer errores.■ Revisa el nuevo vocabulario todos los días y

úsalo siempre que tengas oportunidad.■ Trabaja con la pronunciación en tu casa,

colegio… o combi.■ Ve programas de televisión y escucha música,

pero trata de entender las palabras en inglés.■ ¡Empieza a leer! Existe una gran variedad de

libros para todos los niveles y gustos en el SAC.■ Pregunta al profesor o profesora si tienes alguna duda. Ellos están para

apoyarte.

Evita■ Tratar de entender cada palabra en alguna actividad de listening, trata de

entender la idea principal o general.■ Traducir. Recuerda que el inglés es un idioma distinto y algunas veces es difícil

encontrar la palabra exacta en español.■ Temer si cometes errores en algún punto específico. Estás en un proceso de

aprendizaje, puedes pedirle a tu profesor(a) que te explique una vez más laparte en la que encuentras dificultad.

■ Tratar de usar vocabulario o alguna parte gramatical que no conoces aún ypor tanto, no dominas bien.

■ Usar español en clase, ya que este es el lugar donde puedes practicar lo quehas aprendido.

■ Olvidar llevar un buen diccionario. La autonomía es una cualidad que necesitasdesarrollar.

El 4 de octubre se llevó a cabo en el auditorio de San Miguelun “Spelling Contest” con los alumnos de Juniors 1.

A través de diferentes actividades y de una forma dinámicalos alumnos ejercitaron sus habilidades para deletrear palabras.Asimismo, se logró que pongan en práctica los conocimientosadquiridos en su primer mes en el BRITÁNICO, de esta manera

se motivó el interés por el idioma inglés y la participación decada alumno, quienes se mostraron muy interesados en todo momento.

As part of the reading activities set in theadvanced phase, last month the Advancedfour students had the idea of performing themost important parts of three magnificentbooks: Animal Farm, The Phantom of theOpera and Round the World in Eighty Days.The students worked really hard during all thecycle, rehearsing and giving life to the differentcharacters of each book, and it is an honourfor me to say that thanks to their motivationand discipline they had an outstandingperformance. They really enjoyed workingwith their group and could really understandand enter the magical world of each book.

Todos los meses el SAC de SAN MIGUEL dala bienvenida a los alumnos que ingresan porprimera vez al BRITÁNICO.

Aprovechando la tecnología con la quecontamos, esta bienvenida no sólo es unmomento ameno con proyecciones dediapositivas y pequeños concursos dereconocimiento del idioma básico, sino quepropiciamos el interés por conocer más sobrelos beneficios que obtienen al ser alumnos dela ACPB. Nuestros alumnos se muestranentusiasmados por el material que seencuentra a su disposición y del que puedenhacer uso a través de la presentación del carnédel SAC o documento de matrícula.

Día a día nuestro SAC cuenta con una mayorafluencia de alumnado, a quienes saludamospor su dedicación y sus ganas de mejorar yperfeccionar su aprendizaje del inglés. Ellonos motiva a ser mejores y brindarles unservicio de calidad.

Mucho más que un campeonatoMaría Isabel Rosas,, Recepcionista

Con el objetivo de integrar al personal y afianzar los lazos de amistad, este añotambién participamos con mucho entusiasmo del campeonato deportivo organizadopor nuestra Asociación.

Esta fue una oportunidad para unir a todo el personal que labora en el BRITÁNICO.Nosotros como centro participamos en las tres disciplinas: vóley mixto, fulbitode varones y fulbito de mujeres. Cada encuentro fue vivido con mucho entusiasmoy pasión, y nuestra barra nunca dejó de alentar a sus equipos. Gracias al esfuerzoy la entrega de nuestros jugadores obtuvimos el primer puesto tanto en vóleymixto como en barra y el segundo lugar en fútbol femenino.

En la clausura del campeonato estuvieron presentes todos los equipos finalistas,quienes junto con los colaboradores de los centros y sus familiares disfrutaronde un día de integración y de esparcimiento.
