TOUR HIGHLIGHTS THE YOUTH ORCHESTRA RISING

To commemorate Chile’s role in the origin of the social youth orchestra movement of the Americas and the legacy of Maestro Jorge Peña Hen, YOA Orchestra of the Americas will undertake a national concert tour of Chile.

RESIDENCE IN LA SERENA | JUNE 29—JULY 10 Joining 70 YOA musicians from across the Americas, 10 young Chilean musicians of Fundación de Orquestas

Juveniles e Infantiles de Chile (FOJI) represent the country’s regional youth orchestras. The two-week Residence, led by Music Director Carlos Miguel Prieto and YOA Faculty, is hosted by Universidad de la Serena and the Intendencia de

Coquimbo.

COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP The Chile Tour includes free concerts for communities, open rehearsals to the public, and musical exchanges with local conservatories. During the Residence, YOA musicians will have the opportunity to serve as coaches and gain didactic experience as they oversee 10 days of sectionals and full orchestra rehearsals of the Youth Orchestra "Jorge Peña Hen" of La Serena. Hands-on instruction by YOA musicians and conductors Hugo Dominguez, Benjamin Zander, and Felipe

Hidalgo culminates with a July 10 concert showcasing their work.

11-CONCERT TOUR | JULY 10—28 YOA tours across the country through La Serena, Valparaíso, Santiago, Talca, Concepción, and Frutillar. In addition to presenting concerts in Chile’s major concert halls—Teatro Municipal de Las Condes (Santiago), Aula Magna de la Universidad Federico Santa Maria (Valparaíso), and Teatro del Lago (Frutillar)—this combined YOA-FOJI orchestra will offer performances throughout Chile. At the conclusion of the Tour, the orchestra will be in Residence for five days in a southern lakeside resort in Frutillar hosted by Corporación

Cultural Teatro del Lago.

RESIDENCIA EN LA SERENA | 29 JUNIO—10 JULIO

A los 70 músicos de los diferentes países de las Américas que

conforman la YOA, se les unirán 10 músicos chilenos de la

Fundación de Orquestas Juveniles e Infantiles de Chile (FOJI),

quienes representan las orquestas juveniles regionales de

Chile. La residencia de dos semanas, liderada por el Director

Musical Carlos Miguel Prieto y los Maestros de la YOA, será

auspiciada por la Universidad de la Serena y la Intendencia

de Coquimbo.

LIDERAZGO COMUNITARIO

La Gira de Chile ofrecerá conciertos gratuitos en diferentes

comunidades, ensayos para el público, e intercambios

musicales con conservatorios locales. Durante la Residencia,

los músicos de YOA tendrán la oportunidad de fungir como

maestros y adquirir experiencia didáctica mientras lideran 10

días de seccionales y ensayos de orquesta completa con la

Orquesta Juvenil “Jorge Peña Hen” de La Serena. La

instrucción personal con los músicos de YOA y los

conductores Hugo Domínguez, Benjamin Zander y Felipe

Hildago, culminará con un concierto el 10 de julio donde

demostraran su trabajo.

GIRA DE 11 CONCIERTOS | 10—28 JULIO

YOA se presentará en La Serena, Valparaíso, Santiago, Talca,

Concepción y Frutillar. Además de tocar conciertos en las

salas más importantes de Chile, incluyendo el Teatro

Municipal de Las Condes (Santiago), el Aula Magna de la

Universidad Federico Santa Maria (Valparaíso) y el Teatro

del Lago (Frutillar), esta orquesta combinada YOA-FOJI

ofrecerá conciertos a lo largo y ancho de Chile. Al finalizar la

Gira, la Orquesta realizará una residencia de cinco días un

W e are excitedly awaiting YOA Orchestra of the Americas’ visit to Chile in 2012. It will be their first visit since 2002 when they performed a magnificent concert alongside the National Youth Orchestra of Chile. That concert was directed by then unknown – but now world famous – Gustavo Dudamel.

The trip will include a complete series of concerts in different cities around the country, including La Serena, Valparaíso, Santiago, Talca, Concepcion, and Frutillar. The tour will also include the participation of young musicians from each of the country’s 15 regions. These musicians will collaborate with YOA during rehearsals and concerts. As part of this tour, it will be with great pleasure that we welcome the YOA musicians and their Music Director Carlos Miguel Prieto to Santiago on July 15th. We are sure that this will be an element of great inspiration for our youngsters, who will surely benefit a great deal from this collective work of excellence.

As First Lady, and having worked for over 20 years in the socio-cultural sphere, it is an inspiration to be able to serve as President of Fundación de Orquestas Juveniles e Infantiles de Chile, an organization founded by Fernando Rosas and currently under the direction of Maritza Parada. This institution – which includes over 380 orchestras, with more than 10 thousand children and youngsters from all over the country – does wonderful work and contributes to the comprehensive development of our country.

I invite you to become a part of this cause by supporting YOA during this beautiful trip through Chile.

E stamos esperando con mucho entusiasmo la próxima venida de la YOA Orquesta de las Américas a Chile en 2012. Será su primera visita desde que se presentaron junto con la Orquesta Nacional Juvenil de Chile, en un magnífico concierto en 2002 que fue dirigido por el entonces desconocido - y hoy estrella mundial - Gustavo Dudamel.

El viaje contempla un completo programa de conciertos en distintas ciudades del país, entre ellas La Serena, Valparaíso, Santiago, Talca, Concepción y Frutillar. Además, se contará con la participación especial de jóvenes músicos chilenos de cada una de las 15 regiones del país, quienes colaborarán en ensayos y conciertos. Como parte de la celebración de la gira, será un placer darles la bienvenida a los jóvenes músicos de YOA y a su director musical Carlos Miguel Prieto el 15 de julio durante su estancia en Santiago. Estamos seguros que esto último será un elemento de gran inspiración para nuestros jóvenes, quienes se verán altamente beneficiados con este trabajo colectivo de excelencia.

Como Primera Dama, y habiendo trabajado por más de 20 años en el ámbito socio-cultural, es muy inspirador para mí poder servir como presidenta de la Fundación de Orquestas Juveniles e Infantiles de Chile, la cual fue fundada por Fernando Rosas y es actualmente dirigida por Maritza Parada. O n behalf of the Board of Directors, Faculty, Musicians and Staff of YOA Orchestra of the Americas, we are honored to make this spectacular tour of Chile.

We extend our warm applause to Maritza Parada, director of Fundación de Orquestas Juveniles e Infantiles de Chile (FOJI) for this invitation. In a special collaboration between our institutions, 15 FOJI musicians join the YOA international orchestra to take full advantage of this rigorous training and performance program.

Our Music Director, Carlos Miguel Prieto, leads these prodigious musicians and renowned guest soloists in seven performances. Benjamin Zander conducts two concerts and gives his famous “Art of Possibility” master class. As always, our faculty and musicians interact with local musicians during the tour. For musicians and audiences alike, YOA’s multicultural ensemble—playing together in harmony—imparts a deep sense of belonging to a greater humanity and the rewards of enriching the lives of others.

It gives me great pleasure to recognize the generosity of our board members and donors. We salute the many dedicated people and distinguished partners in Chile who have made this tour possible and give heartfelt thanks to the Embassy of Chile in Washington and the Embassy of the United States in Santiago.

T he youth orchestra as a vehicle for social change is one of the most compelling stories of our time. Across the globe, symphonic ensembles are discovering that their contribution to humanity is much more than showcasing great art. Orchestras can and do play a vital role in the social development of communities.

Chile has a long tradition of using the power of music for social change. Today, our nationwide youth orchestra system, Fundación de Orquestas Juveniles e Infantiles de Chile, includes over 380 orchestras serving more than 10,000 youth, providing them with tools and resources to attain their dreams, and in the process, become stronger citizens and well-rounded individuals.

My country looks forward to the arrival of 80 young musicians from 20 nations of the Americas and world-class artists Carlos Miguel Prieto, Sarah Chang, Louis Lortie, Benjamin Zander and Timothy Chooi. It is certain that YOA will “wow” audiences with this enormous display of talent. Each concert represents a special celebration of Chile within this tapestry of nations. 15 Chilean members symbolize the talent of the 15 regions of Chile and of our country’s youth as a whole.

An exciting and insightful communicator renowned for his charismatic presence on the conductor's podium and his versatile command of various composers and styles, Carlos Miguel Prieto is considered one of the most dynamic young conductors on the classical stage today. Currently music director of the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Mexico and the Orquesta Sinfónica de Minería in his native Mexico, and the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra in the United States, Maestro Prieto is also in high demand as a guest conductor.

Un comunicador emocionante y profundo, dominio por su carismática presencia en el podio del director y su comando versátil de diversos compositores y estilos, Carlos Miguel Prieto es considerado como uno de los directores jóvenes más dinámicos en el mundo de la música clásica de hoy en día. Actualmente es director musical de la Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de México y la Orquesta Sinfónica de Minería en su tierra natal de México, y la Orquesta Filarmónica de Louisiana en los Estados Unidos. BENJAMIN ZANDER

A leading interpreter of Mahler and Beethoven, Benjamin Zander is known for his charisma and

unyielding energy and for his brilliant pre-concert talks. Since 1979, Benjamin Zander has been the conductor of the Boston Philharmonic. He is known around the world as both a guest conductor and a speaker on leadership. French-Canadian pianist Louis Lortie has attracted critical acclaim throughout Europe, Asia, and the United States, not least for extending his interpretative voice across a broad repertoire range rather than choosing to specialize in one particular style. The London Times, describing his playing as "ever immaculate, ever imaginative", has identified the artist's "combination of total spontaneity and meditated ripeness that only great pianists have".

Sarah Chang is recognized as one of the world’s great violinists. Since her debut with the New York Philharmonic at the age of 8 she has performed with the greatest orchestras, conductors and accompanists internationally in a career spanning more than two decades. In 2012, she will have recorded exclusively for EMI Classics for 20 years.

17 year old Canadian violin prodigy Timothy Chooi has won numerous prizes including the Grand Prize in the 2010 Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal Standard Life Competition. He is presently studying at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. In 2010, Timothy was a Prize Winner at the Yehudi Menuhin International Violin Competition (Senior Division) in Oslo, Norway. He has also won First Prize at the Canadian Music Competition, Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival (two time gold medalist), and the BC National Festival of the Arts.

Con tan sólo 17 años de edad, el prodigio canadiense del violín, Timothy Chooi, ya ha ganado numerosos premios incluyendo el Gran Premio de la edición 2010 del Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal Standard Life Competition. De momento se encuentra estudiando en el Curtis Institute de Filadelfía. YOUTH ORCHESTRA “JORGE PEÑA HEN”

Formed by 68 students, the “Jorge Peña Hen” orchestra of La Serena University is dedicated to spreading symphonic music throughout Chile and abroad, performing in Chile's top national theaters, and making tours in Cuba, Perú, Argentina, Sweden, Belgium, France and Spain. The orchestra was founded in 1964 when Jorge Peña Hen, President of the Regional Conservatory of Music of La Serena, launched a revolutionary music education program that allowed under-served children to study music. Jorge Peña Hen and the teachers of the Conservatory in La Serena selected children between 9 and 13 years old to take part, and in December 1964 the first youth orchestra performance in all of Latin America took place. In 1965, the Chilean Government created the Experimental Music School at La Serena University as a permanent home for the orchestra.

Formada por 68 estudiantes, la orquesta “Jorge Peña Hen” de la Universidad de La Serena está dedicada a difundir la música sinfónica en Chile y el extranjero, presentándose en los teatros más importantes de Chile, y saliendo de Gira por Cuba, Perú, Argentina, Suecia, Bélgica, Francia y España. La orquesta fue fundada en 1964 cuando Jorge Peña Hen, Presidente del Conservatorio Regional de Música de La Serena, lanzó un revolucionario programa de educación musical que permitió que niños de escasos recursos pudieran estudiar música. Jorge Peña Hen y los maestros del Conservatorio de la Serena seleccionaron a niños y jóvenes de entre 9 y 13 años de edad, y en diciembre de 1964 tuvo lugar la primera presentación de una orquesta juvenil en Latinoamérica. En 1965, el Gobierno de Chile creo la Escuela Experimental de Música en la Universidad de La Serena como un hogar permanente para la orquesta.

YOA IS A WORLD-CLASS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA of gifted young musicians, ages 18 to 30, representing more than 20 countries in the Western Hemisphere.

YOA’S MISSION is to bring together energetic, talented musicians to pursue excellence and celebrate cultural diversity as a catalyst for social change.

FREE AND OPEN AUDITIONS held annually via YouTube allow any deserving and eligible musician to apply. Following adjudication by a prestigious jury, all musicians participate on full-scholarship to ensure the greatest inclusion and diversity.

THE SEASON CENTERPIECE is a July-August Residence and Concert Tour held each year in different regions of the world. 125 musicians, faculty, conductors, guest artists, and staff gather for a 2-week Residence to prepare world-class repertoire. Musicians receive professional training in master classes, individual instruction, sectionals, full-orchestra rehearsals, professional development courses, and leadership seminars, as well as unparalleled performance experience.

SPECIAL INVITATIONS AND EDUCATIONAL EXCHANGE bring together YOA musicians throughout the year. Programs range from chamber recitals to full-orchestra concerts. YOA musicians also serve as Teaching Artists in partnerships with conservatories and orchestras around the world.

YOA HAS PERFORMED more than 250 concerts since its 2002 Inaugural Tour in the world’s most prestigious concert halls as well as venues not associated with symphonic music. In ten years, YOA has become known for bringing renowned artists— from Yo-Yo Ma to Paquito D’Rivera, from Plácido Domingo to Philip Glass— into the lives of young musicians and diverse audiences. Live performances, television & radio broadcasts, CD recordings, print & Internet media, and documentary films reach millions of people annually.

THE IMPACT of YOA stretches far beyond its programs. Following each project, participants return to their native countries to share new experiences and knowledge. YOA connects musicians to institutions of higher learning and professional job opportunities. YOA is a model for music education programs in Brazil, Colombia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Jamaica, Panama, Peru, Saint Lucia, the United States, and Uruguay.

AUDICIONES GRATUITAS Y ABIERTAS se llevan a cabo de cada año a través de YouTube, eliminando así todos los costos de envío, para garantizar que todo músico merecedor y elegible pueda aplicar. Una vez que han sido elegidos por nuestra prestigioso grupo de Maestros, todos los músicos de la nueva orquesta participan con el apoyo de una beca completa, para así garantizar la mayor igualdad y diversidad posible.

LA PARTE CENTRAL DEL PROGRAMA es la Residencia y la Gira de Conciertos que tienen lugar entre julio y agosto de cada año en diferentes regiones del mundo. Los músicos, facultad, artistas invitados y personal se reúnen en una Residencia de dos semanas donde a través de clases maestras, instrucción individual, seccionales, y ensayos de orquesta completa, preparan un desafiante y diverso repertorio que llevan de Gira durante un mes.

PRESENTACIONES ESPECIALES E INTERCAMBIOS EDUCACATIVOS reúnen a los músicos de YOA fuera del contexto de la Gira. Los programas varían desde recitales de cámara a conciertos con la orquesta completa. Músicos de la YOA son seleccionados como artistas docentes en una asociación con conservatorios y orquestas a través del mundo.
