Saber 11 Exam Results
The Saber 11 Exam is a national exam that all high school
seniors in Colombia take and that is used by the
universities in their selection process. INSA students now
have their results from this years Saber 11 exam and they
are excellent. Five of the 29 seniors had scores at the high
superior level and INSA was in first place compared to the
other calendar A schools in Cali. Dr. Francisco Piedrahita,
Rector of ICESI University, after seeing the results wrote to
Father Amico:
These results are excellent. Effusive congratulations for
you and the other directors, the teachers and employees;
and, of course for the students and their parents. If all the
schools were like INSA, this country would be very
different. Hopefully many of these students will want to
come to ICESI.
Recognition for INSA`s
Best and Brightest
On the first Friday of November, the INSA community of
students, teachers, administrators and workers assembled
to honor its best and brightest. Five Star awards were
conferred on students, employees and administrators. In
the selection of the five star winners everyone participated
by voting for the candidates in each of the categories.
The three best Latin students according to the results of
the Latin contest, won scholarships: 100% for first place,
50% for second and 25% for third. Similarly, according to
results of the competition between the best math
students, the very best were recognized and given prizes.
The top prize, however, was for the Basilian Student of t
Year, Dilan Vallecilla, a tenth grader who was judged
best combine scholarship with Christian values. First t
candidates were selected by their teachers and the
considering all the candidates, Father Amico selected t
winner.

Science Center
Construction is going strong thanks to another generous
donation by a friend of INSA and we are optimistic that it
will be completed before classes start next January. On
top of that another friend has promised funds for the
equipment and supplies needed to do experiments. So,
before long, INSA students will be watching and doing
experiments in there own lab! It was something INSA
needed very much in order to provide a first class
education in science for our twenty-first century students.
Soon it will be a reality thanks to the help of our friends.
INSA Summer Festival
INSA held its summer Festival on a Saturday in September,
but it was different this year. This time there were no
cases of beer, nor a prominent stand festooned with
advertising and banners for Colombias best selling beer.
In fact there was no beer at all, nor aguardiente, nor any
other alcoholic beverage. Instead t-shirts with the slogan,
En INSA nos queremos, nos cuidamos, no tomamos!!! (In
INSA we like each other, we care for each other, we dont
drink) were seen worn by students and teachers. There
also was a community police van with videos inside for the
public to see about drug addiction, alcoholism and
parental abuse of children. The theme for this years
Summer Festival was where there are children there is n
room for alcohol. It was groundbreaking because
Colombia parties and social events are almost alwa
celebrated with alcohol. Contrary to expectations of
few, the Festival had a great turnout and everyone had
good time. INSAs students learned through experien
that day at the Festival that the widely held belief that yo
cant have a good time without alcohol is no more than
myth, a very important lesson for anyone growing up
Colombia today.
Educating for Problem
Solving
ICESI University and the Gabriel Piedrahita Foundation a
advising INSA in a project aimed at increasing the proble
solving capacity of INSA students. ICESI and the GFoundation applied questionnaires and made classroo
observations for second and third grade students this ye
in March and October to evaluate how well proble
solving was being taught in INSA. They found that there
room for improvement in the formulation of problems a
in tailoring the teaching to each students learning leve
As a result preparations are being made to start changi
teaching in these areas in the next school year beginning
January. INSA will also collect and analyze data next ye
to evaluate the effects of the changes and make tappropriate adjustments. Thus, with a little help from o
friends, INSA forges ahead, ever improving the education
experience of her students.

Changes for INSA in 2014
When INSA opens its doors to start the school year in 2014
the students will be surprised at the transformation. The
science lab will no longer be on the fourth floor, but will be
a much bigger and better version on the east side thirdfloor. And the old science lab will become a computer
room, next to the other computer rooms. The old
computer room will become an expansion of the culture
center library while the first floor of the library will
become a much needed expansion of the cafeteria that
will enable INSA to serve lunch to all its students at once.
Doing away with the two shift system for lunch will reduce
the noise level while classes are in session and facilitate
the programming of classes. Finally, the music room will
be moved from the fourth floor to a room next to the
auditorium, far from the other classrooms. There, music
practice will not disturb anyone and when they want to
rehearse a performance, the stage of the auditorium is
right next door. INSAs administrator, Paolo Sabogal, will
be very busy the next two months converting these plans
into realities. Its a big job and it must be finished before
the students return from vacation. Hes got all our support
during this race against the clock.
Happy Birthday INSA,you are 21!
INSAs Symphonic Band
INSAs Symphonic Band will be born next year, giving INS
students, for the first time, the wonderful opportunity
develop their talents for playing musical instrumen
Undoubtedly many INSA students already have that tale
but until they are given the opportunity to develop it,
must remain forever dormant. INSAs band will become
reality next year because of a generous friend w
donated the funds to purchase of the instruments in t
States and will provide the logistics to bring them to Ca
and because of Frank Lotario, a retired music teacher fro
New York who lives in Cali. Frank has known about IN
and its good work for years. When he retired recently
offered his services to INSA as a volunteer. He has alrea
started work by showing and instructing INSAs mus
teacher, Benjamin Mosquera, the pedagogical methods
teaching the different musical instruments. He is now
the States purchasing the instruments and when t
school year starts he will accompany professor Mosque
in training the band. If all goes well, the instrumen
should be here when the school year starts and 25 four
and fifth graders will begin their musical adventure
learning to play an instrument and becoming members
a band.

INSAs Young Ambassador
returns from the United
States
Lina Maria Atillo, INSAs tenth grade Native American,
selected by the American Embassy as one of Colombias
young ambassadors is back from her trip to the States, and
what a great experience it was!
The experience started with her trip to Bogota for her visa.
It was her first airplane flight. She arrived at Calis Bonilla
Aragon airport accompanied by her mother, her sister, her
grandmother, her cousin, her cousins nine year old
daughter, and their neighbor who drove the taxi. It was a
little crowded but that didnt matter. In the waiting room
she recognized Victor, another young ambassador from
Puerto Tejada, because she had been in contact with him
on internet. Victor, having flown before, calmed her
anxiety about flying a bit. Nevertheless, she hesitated at
the door of the plane. It was hard for her to believe that
such a big machine could actually fly.
At the airport in Bogota, a man with a sign with their
names on it was waiting to take them and two other young
ambassadors first to the hotel and then to the Embassy for
their visas. At the Embassy they had VIP treatment and
were able to leave with their visas stamped in their
passports in a few hours. While there they met Carolina
Cruz, the TV anchor woman from Cali who was also getting
her visa. That was pretty special.
The next day Lina and the other young ambassadors we
taken to a farm near Bogota where they got to know ea
other, took a workshop on leadership, and ma
presentations about where they were from. Lina made
double presentation, first about Cali, then about t
Native American community of which she is a member, t
Nasa.
A little more than a month later, on October 6 Lina le
home to start on the big trip, to Washington D.C. Fi
stop, Bogota, where they stayed overnight, then on
Washington the next day. All twelve of the Colombi
young ambassadors got to Washington late at night, an
there they met the twelve Ecuadorian ambassadors. Th
didnt go straight to the hotel but instead had a mini-to
of Washington. For the next two nights they stayed in t
4H Study Center, four to a room. In Linas room there w
another Colombian and two girls from Ecuador. Li
learned not only about the American culture but about t
Ecuadorian culture as well. Unfortunately their stay
Washington coincided with the political conflict of the de
ceiling, so they were not able to go inside the Capitol
the White House.
From Washington the ambassadors went to Delaware
stay with 4H families. With the families as their bases th
set off every day on excursions to points of interest. Lina
family had a mother, a father and two daughters living
home. The other three children were married and livingtheir own homes but Lina got to know them too. Jessi
from Quindio stayed in the same family with Lina and sin
Jessica spoke little English, and the family spoke n
Spanish, Lina served as their translator. Lina showed h
host family the INSA webpage. They were so impressed
the video and the newsletter on the web page that th
said they wanted to come to Cali for a visit. Lina thoug
that the Catholic Mass she attended with the family w
more solemn than the Mass in Cali. Everyone was quiet
she said.
For their three days in New York City they stayed in a hot
near the Empire State Building. Linas impression of t
New Yorkers she saw rushing about on the sidewalks w
that they are intent on what they are doing, and doing
fast. They took tour busses and carriage rides arou
Central Park, had dinner in an elegant restaurant, went
Radio City and then to a Broadway show, Spider Man. S
had the time of her life!
Dr. Richard Lee, President of the American Society of Cali,
presents Lina with a gift for her visit to the USA.

INSAs fifteenth
Graduation
At five oclock, Saturday afternoon, November 23rd
the
program for the fifteenth graduation began with a solemn
Mass in the school chapel. The Mass was celebrated in
thanksgiving for the educational experience in INSA that
has enriched the lives of the graduating students duringthe past eleven years.
The second part of the program was the graduation
ceremony in the school auditorium, beautifully decorated
with floral arrangements. The graduating students were
dressed in formal attire, the boys in black tuxedos and the
girls in white gowns. The invited speaker, Ivan Ossma, MD,
gave an inspiring account of how, overcoming obstacles,
he became an Ophthalmologist and now has an important
position in Calis leading medical center, the Valle de Lili
Foundation. The diplomas were handed out and the
awards given to the best students, then in a pause in the
ceremony, came the most moving part: the graduates,
diplomas in hand left their seats to go to their families to
share with them their grand achievement. For most of the
students, their graduation from INSA was the crowning
achievement for their families, and also a critical step in
their path to even greater success in life.
The final part of the program was the dinner in the school
dining hall for the graduates and their families. It was
beautifully decorated and served as the perfect setting for
the formally dressed graduates to end their celebration of
the most important moment of their young lives.
We want to express a special word of thanks to Paolo
Sabogal, INSAs administrator, who was responsible for
many of the details that made each of the three parts of
the program work so well.
