Valparaiso is the capital of one of the most densely inhabited regions of Chile. The National Congress has its headquarters in this city. Iglesia La Matriz: Ubicada en el sector Puerto, a los pies del cerro Santo domingo, lugar donde se instalaron las primeras agrupaciones hispánicas, fue declarado zona de interés histórico y turístico. Es el templo más antiguo de la ciudad, declarado monumento Nacional, levantado en 1559 y reconstruido en 1837, se alzó allí la actual Iglesia, en cuyos alrededores permanecen las construcciones más antiguas de Valparaíso.

La Matriz Church: Located in the harbour area, on the foot of the Santo domingo hill, where the first groups of Spanish settled down, the church was declared historic and touristic place of interest. It is the oldest temple of the city. It was declared National monument, built in 1559 and rebuilt in 1837. The current church was constructed there. The surrounding area still holds Valparaiso’s oldest buildings.

Ascensor Artillería: Su línea actual se inaugura en 1914 y recibe el flujo de turistas que circulan en el sector portuario. La planta alta conduce al Paseo 21 de mayo, el mirador y al museo Naval y marítimo. En 1998 fue declarado monumento Histórico Nacional. Hoy se encuentra en buen estado.

Artillería Funicular: This actual route was unveiled in 1914 and receives a wave of tourists that visit the port area. You can visit the panoramic 21-de mayo walking site, sea viewpoint and the Naval maritime museum. In 1998 it was declared National Historic monument. It remains in good working condition.

Museo Naval y Marítimo: Establecimiento destinado a resguardar, conservar y difundir hacia la comunidad, el patrimonio histórico Naval y marítimo de Chile. Este museo conserva importantes reliquias, testimonios de la formación y evolución de la Armada de Chile desde 1818 hasta 1880.

Naval and Maritime Museum: This building was designed to protect, preserve and shows the historic naval heritage of Chile to the community. This building preserves naval relics and proofs of the beginnings and evolution of the Chilean Navy from 1818 to 1880.

Museo palacio baburizza: Construido en 1915/16, este edificio es un exponente del eclecticismo arquitectónico, con elementos art-nouveau en su fachada. En la actualidad alberga al museo de Bellas Artes que reúne una importante colección pictórica y está ubicado en el Paseo Yugoslavo.

The museum of Fine Arts is currently housed within this building. It boasts an important collection of paintings and is located in the Paseo Yugoslavo.

Ascensor El peral: Entró en funcionamiento en 1902 y tiene 50 mts. de trayectoria. La planta alta conduce al Paseo mirador Yugoslavo y al palacio Baburizza. En 1998 fue declarado monumento Histórico Nacional. Hoy se encuentra en buen estado.

El peral Elevator: Started operation in 1902, and is 50 metres in length. You can visit the Paseo Yugoslavo site, sea viewpoint and the Baburizza Palace. In 1998 was declared National Historic monument. It remains in good working condition.

Ascensor Concepción: Inaugurado en 1883 y tiene 70 mts. Fue el primero en transportar pasajeros entre el plan de la ciudad y un cerro. La planta alta conduce al Paseo gervasoni y su mirador. En 1998 fue declarado monumento Histórico Nacional. Hoy se encuentra en buen estado.

Concepción Funicular: Started operation in 1883; it is 70 metres in length. It was the first one to transport passengers from the city plain up to the hill. You can visit to the Paseo gervasoni site and sea viewpoint. In 1998 was declared National Historic monument. It remains in good working condition.

Ascensor reina Victoria: El ascensor fue inaugurado en 1903 y tiene 45 mts. La planta alta conduce al Paseo dimalow y al entorno comercial de los cerros Alegre y Concepción. En 1998 fue declarado monumento Histórico Nacional. Hoy se encuentra en buen estado.

reina Victoria Funicular: It started operation in 1903 and is 45 metres in length. You can visit the Paseo dimalow site as well as the business districts of Concepción Hill and Alegre Hill. In 1998, it was declared National Historic monument. It remains in good working condition.

Iglesia Anglicana saint paul: En el interior se encuentran vitrales importados desde el Reino Unido y un gran órgano musical a tubos donado en 1901 en memoria de la Reina Victoria. Se realizan Conciertos de órgano todos los domingos a las 12:30.

saint paul Anglican Church: Inside you will find windows imported from the United Kingdom and a large pipe organ donated in 1901 in memory of Queen Victoria. Organ concerts are held every Sunday at 12:30.

La sebastiana: Casa museo del poeta Premio Nóbel de Literatura (1971) Pablo Neruda que residió durante largos años en la ciudad. Se aprecia una variedad de piezas de colección que hablan de la vida y aficiones de este gran poeta chileno.

La sebastiana: This is the house and museum of Nobel prize winner of Literature (1971) Pablo Neruda who lived for many years in this city. A variety of works of art are shown, which were part of the life and passions of this great Chilean poet.

Museo a Cielo Abierto: Este original museo, consiste en una serie de 20 murales, cercanos unos de otros que forman parte de un recorrido por los faldeos del cerro Bellavista, transformando el paisaje en un espacio para el fomento del arte y la cultura. Roberto matta, José Balmes y Nemesio Antúnez son algunos de los artistas que colaboraron con esta iniciativa.

open sky museum: This original museum consists of a series of 20 murals, close to together, that form a route around of Bellavista Hill, transforming the landscape into a space for the promotion of art and culture. Roberto matta, José Balmes and Nemesio Antúnez are some of the artists who helped with this initiative.

Catedral de Valparaíso: Este edificio de estilo gótico se construyó entre los años 1930 y 1950. Es una iglesia de culto católico romano y es sede de la diócesis de Valparaíso. Está ubicada en el entorno de la Plaza Victoria, donde también se encuentran la Biblioteca Severín y el museo de Historia Natural.

Valparaiso Cathedral: This gothic style building was built between 1930 and 1950. The church is Roman Catholic and is home to the diocese of Valparaíso. It is located in the vicinity of Victoria Square, which also contains the Severin Library and museum of Natural History.

La SebastianaL

a Sebastiana is a highlight in the touristic and cultural scene of the city of Valparaíso. It maintains a constant amount of visitors throughout the year with a strong emphasis on literary, musical and scenic activities, which are free and open to everyone. The physical space and its integration in the city

are relevant aspects: Today, La Sebastiana has at its disposal a square, a library of Chilean poetry, a poetry workshop and another one for stained glass window, a touristic and cultural information center, which represent a contribution to the social and cultural life of Valparaíso.

La Sebastiana is the house that Pablo Neruda bought together with his friends Fran-cisco Velasco and marie martner, in Valparaíso, in 1959. It was inaugurated on 18 September 1961 in typical Chilean style with a party with Chilean cowboys and red wine.

Neruda wrote to his friend Sara Vial, poet and journalist of Valparaíso asking her to look for a place for him to settle down in Valparaíso:“I am getting tired of Santiago. I want to find a little house in Valparaíso to live and write in pea-ce. It needs to fulfill certain conditions. It can-not be situated too much high up in the hills or downtown. I want it to be isolated but not too much. Hopefully the neighbors are invisible. I don’t want to see or hear them. Original but not uncomfortable. Very airy but also steady, not too big and not too small. Far from everything but close to public transport. Independent but with shops close by. Also, it should be very che-ap. do you think I could find a house like that in Valparaíso?”

This is how he started living in La Sebastiana. The house was baptized by Neruda with this name as a tribute to Sebastián Collado. Neruda himself said in his poem “ To La Sebastiana”, of his book Plenos Poderes:

TO LA SEBASTIANA

I built the house.

First, I built one in the air.After I hoisted the flagAnd I let it hangFrom the firmament, from the stars,From brightness and darkness.

Concrete, iron, glass,Were the invention,They were worth more than wheat and like gold,They were to be sought and sold,And that is how the truck came:They took down bagsAnd more bags,The tower held on to the hard earth-but that’s not enough, said the builder,We’re missing concrete, glass, iron, doors,And I didn’t sleep at night…

La SebastianaL

a Sebastiana resalta como un hito de la ac-tividad turística y cul-tural de la ciudad de

Valparaíso manteniendo una actividad sconstante, durante todo el año, con fuerte énfasis en actividades literarias, musicales y escénicas gratuitas y abiertas a toda la comunidad. Otro aspecto relevante tiene relación con el espacio físico y su integración a la ciudad: Hoy, La Sebastiana cuenta con una plaza, una biblioteca de poesía chilena, un taller de poesía y de vitrales, un centro de información turística y cultural, que constituyen un aporte a la vida social y cultural de Valparaíso.

La Sebastiana es la casa que Pablo Neruda compró en obra gruesa, junto a sus amigos Francisco Velasco y marie mart-ner, en la ciudad de Valparaíso, en 1959, que fue inaugurada el 18 de septiembre de 1961, con una fiesta chilena con huasos y vino tinto.Neruda le escribe a su amiga Sara Vial, poeta y periodista de Valparaíso, pidiéndole que busque un lugar para instalarse en Valparaíso:

“Siento el cansancio de Santiago. Quiero hallar en Valparaíso una casita para vivir y escribir tranquilo. Tiene que poseer algunas condiciones. No puede estar ni muy arriba ni muy abajo. debe ser solitaria, pero no en exceso. Vecinos, ojalá invisibles. No deben verse ni escucharse. Original, pero no in-cómoda. muy alada, pero firme. Ni muy grande ni muy chica. Lejos de todo pero cerca de la movilización. Independiente, pero con comercio cerca. Además tiene que ser muy barata. ¿Crees que podré encontrar una casa así en Valparaíso?”

Comienza de esta manera a vivir La Sebastiana, bautizada así por Neruda en homenaje y recuerdo a Sebastián Collado. dice el propio Neruda, en su poema “A La Sebastiana”, del libro Plenos Poderes:

A LA SEBASTIANA

Yo construí la casa.

La hice primero de aire.Luego subí en el aire la banderay la dejé colgadadel firmamento, de la estrella, dela claridad y de la oscuridad.

Cemento, hierro, vidrio,eran la fábula,valían más que el trigo y como el oro,había que buscar y que vender,y así llegó un camión:bajaron sacosy más sacos,la torre se agarró a la tierra dura-pero, no basta, dijo el Constructor,falta cemento, vidrio, fierro, puertas-,y no dormí en la noche…

Ascensor polanco: Construido en 1915 y su acceso es a través de un túnel de 150 mts. de largo que conecta el único carro que asciende verticalmente 60 mts. por el interior del cerro. En 1976 fue declarado monumento Histórico Nacional. Hoy se encuentra en buen estado.

polanco Lift: Built in 1915, the lift can be entered through a 150 meter long tunnel. The only carriage, which goes up vertically 60 meters, is the connection to the inside of the hill. In 1976 it was declared National Historic monument. Currently, the lift is in good condition.

Mercado El Cardonal: Edificio construido en 1907. Es una de las estructuras metálicas traídas desde Europa y se configura como mecano.

Edificio del Congreso Nacional: El 11 de marzo de 1990, el Congreso abrió sus puertas, convirtiendo a Valparaíso en la nueva Capital Legislativa de Chile.

paseo wheelwright: Su recorrido es paralelo a la línea férrea y une el muelle Barón, el centro náutico y la playa Portales. Está permitido el tránsito peatonal ó en bicicleta.

wheelwright walk: This route is parallel to the railroad and joins Baron dock, nautical center and Portales beach. Only open to pedestrian or bicycle traffic.

Iglesia de san Francisco: Terminó de construirse en 1865. Es un ícono de la ciudad visible desde tierra y mar y ha sobrevivido ha terremotos e incendios. En 1983 fue declarada monumento Histórico Nacional.

Concierto de Ciudad: domingo 29 de enero / 21 horas. El Festival Tsonami serán los encargados de cerrar la segunda versión del Festival de las Artes con un concierto de ciudad al atardecer el día domingo 29 de enero. desde distintos puntos de Valparaíso, habrá músicos en que-bradas y cerros, se harán sonar las campanas de iglesias, sirenas de bomberos, sirenas de buques.

Chajnantor Mirar hacia Atrás: do-mingo 29 de enero / 17 horas. / teatro parque Cultural Valparaísodesde Antofagasta, la compañía La Huella Tea-tro realiza una investigación antropológica cen-trada en los hallazgos arqueológicos de momifi-cación artificial hecha por los Chinchorros hace más de 7 mil años y la momificación natural de los Lican Antai, el proceso da como resultado esta obra que contó con la asesoría teatral de Jaime Lorca (La Troppa / Viaje Inmóvil).
