Questions of the Week September 15, 2019 Gospel

Come home. God’s forgiveness is always there. God forgives before we

even ask for forgiveness. Question for Children: : The father in this story welcomed his son home, even after he ran away and did bad things. How do you know God welcomes you after you do that? Question for Youth: The prodigal son was welcomed home even though he had sinned. How hard is it for you to ask for forgiveness? Is it hard for you to believe that you are still loved even when you have sinned? Question for Adults: When you wander away from being true to your faith, how do you know God will take you back? What signs do you see?

Saint Robert Bellarmine, S.J. was an Italian

Jesuit and a cardinal of the Catholic Church. He

was canonized a saint in 1930 and named

Doctor of the Church, one of only 36. He was

one of the most important figures in the

Counter-Reformation.

Shepherd’s Call

Jesus Christ was a teacher, but also much more than a teacher; he is the God-man. At various times in the

gospels, his interlocutors address him as “Rabbi,” which means “teacher.” (John 1:38; 20:16; et. al.) He chose to

teach in parables. A large part of his message is that God is a loving Father. We have a beautiful illustration of

that in this weekend’s parable! The son leaves his father. When he comes to his senses, the father receives him

back even though the son had hurt him so. Jesus is showing us the heavenly Father in general. It is also an

image of what happens in a particular way at every time we come to the Sacrament of Penance and

Reconciliation and confess our sins to God.

The parable of the lost sheep is dear to my heart. It is the image and verse that I used on the card

commemorating my ordination to the priesthood nine years and four months ago.

This weekend we celebrate the teachers who today are members of our parish community. The theme for

catechetical Sunday is “Stay with Us,” a reference to the disciples plea to Jesus after walking the road to

Emmaus. It reminds us that Jesus is still the greatest teacher and much of our job is pointing to him. First of all, I

want to recognize the parishioners who are teachers or aides in our Sunday morning PREP classes. Along with it,

I recognize the work of the excellent teachers in both our schools: St. Peter in Chains School and St. Joseph

Consolidated School. Those who teach in the public schools who are informed by Christ’s example and

conformed to him through the Sacraments serve the Church as well as their school. Our youth ministry volun-

teers also share in this work. I cannot neglect the many parents who are the first teachers of their children in the

ways of faith – as they heard at their child’s baptism. Wow that’s a lot of teaching!

Your role in forming our youth is invaluable! However, we could probably do more

in educating our adults. There will be a blessing for all teachers after the homily at

all Masses in the region this weekend.

What a joy to know, love, and serve the good God.

In Christ,

Music Ministry: In Paul’s letter to

the Ephesians he says that in Christ

Jesus we have been destined and

called to live for the praise of God’s

glory. Exalted creatures, the

angels, do this by singing before

the face of God. We join our

voices to theirs in praise. Both St.

Peter’s and St. Julie’s English-

language choirs rehearse on Thursday nights and are

welcoming new members. Spanish-language

rehearses Wednesday. If interested in sharing musi-

cal gifts at St. Joseph, contact Jonathan Alexander.

A great First Day of PREP with our students, teachers, teen

helpers & parents.

The Cursillo (pronounced “ker-see-oh”) is an official world-wide movement of the Catholic Church, recognized by the Holy See and supported by Pope Francis and Archbishop Dennis Schnurr. The Cursillo helps people discover and experience just how much God loves them. As each person grows in the knowledge and experience of God’s love, he or she is then more inclined to follow Jesus and is better able to live the Gospel in the various places God has put them to live.

For each person, the Cursillo envisions a continuous and progressive conversion leading to a deeper and more personal relationship with Jesus. The Cursillo employs a method that relies upon the encouragement and support found in small friendship/prayer groups. An emphasis is placed on a balanced life of prayer, continued spiritual formation, and evangelization. The idea is to help each person become the “Good News” and be the leaven in the environments we find ourselves in everyday, our homes, neighborhoods, schools, workplaces, etc. Imagine how our families, neighborhoods, and the world would be different if we each allowed the love of Christ to work through us everyday. The Cursillo Movement is introduced over a consecutive 72-hour period called a Three-Day Weekend. It is an opportunity to set aside worries and focus on Jesus. The weekend has often been referred to as an encounter with Christ. This may seem like a bold claim, but thousands will attest to their own personal encounter with Christ.

If you would like to have more information about the Cursillo, please contact Michael Collins by email at [email protected] or through the parish office at (513) 863-3938. You can also check out the website at: http://www.cincinnati-cursillo.org/.

The next men’s weekend is scheduled for September 19-22, 2019.

The next women’s weekend is March 26-29, 2020.

2019 SPS Walk-a-Thon, Eagles Rock! St. Peter in Chains School’s EPIC, our parent-teacher collaboration, will be hosting the 11th annual Walk-a-Thon Wednesday, October 9th, 2019. The Walk-a-Thon Committee is currently seeking private donors and corporate sponsors. With this fundraiser, EPIC has provided integral support for the school and set it on the path to continued success. For the first time, St. Peter in Chains School, in partnership with the Great Miami Valley YMCA, is offering preschool and a year-round early childhood learning center, which provides parents with a Christ-centered educational option and nurturing childcare. EPIC supported this de-velopment, which includes the first phase of a multi-year plan to air condition the school. EPIC funds are also being used to reimagine our science lab, create an outdoor learning space, upgrade furnishings in classrooms and other areas, enhance student technology, fund field trips, and much more. With your gener-osity, EPIC will continue to help St. Peter in Chains School shine with Christ’s light for all to see. Corporate sponsors will need to be identified by Monday, September 23, 2019, to ensure their recognition on t-shirts and other materials. We hope to have all donations by Monday, October 7, 2019. Donor/Sponsor commitment forms may be found in the back of the church or you can donate online at: https://stpeterinchains.weshareonline.org/ws/opportunities/WalkathonDonations If you want your donation to support a specific child or family, please add that name in the comments. Please contact Kelly Heile, (513) 455-0139, or [email protected] for more details.
