Build BackgroundHelp students use their knowledge about marine life to visualize the text. Read the title and author and talk about the cover photograph. Tell students that this book is informational text, so they will learn many interesting facts about whales.

Choices for Further Support• Fluency Invite students to choose a passage from the text and demonstrate

pausing and using the appropriate stress during reading. Remind students to pause after punctuation and use a louder tone to stress italicized terms to be emphasized (espiráculo, grasa).

• Comprehension Based on your observations of the students’ reading and discussion, revisit parts of the text to clarify or extend comprehension. Remind students to go back to the text to support their ideas.

4 Al igual que los demás mamíferos, las crías de las ballenas

nacen de la madre. El período de gestación dura entre diez y

dieciséis meses, dependiendo de la especie. Las ballenas sólo

tienen un bebé, o ballenato, a la vez. A diferencia de los bebés

humanos, los ballenatos pueden moverse solos de inmediato y

nadan desde el momento en que nacen. Sin embargo, los

ballenatos dependen de la madre para alimentarse. Las mamás

ballenas los alimentan con leche muy nutritiva. Gracias al alto

contenido en grasa de la leche, el ballenato no siente frío en el
