    SCREEN OPENINGS

    FACTORS TO CONSIDER

1 PurposeIf the strainer is being used for protection ratherthan direct filtration, standard screens w ill sufficein m ost applications.

2 ServiceW ith services that require extrem ely sturdyscreens, such as high pressure/tem peratureapplications or services w ith high viscosities, perforated screens w ithout m esh liners arerecom m ended. If a m esh liner is required toobtain a certain level of filtration, then a trappedperf/m esh/perf com bination is recom m ended.

3 Filtration LevelW hen choosing a perf. or a m esh/perf.com bination, attention should be given to ensure

overstraining does not occur. As a general rule, the specified level of filtration should be nosm aller than half the size of the particle to berem oved. If too fine a filtration is specified, thepressure drop through the strainer w ill increasevery rapidly, possibly causing dam age to thescreen.

Screen openings other than those show n aboveare readily available. Various m esh sizes as fine as5 m icron and perforated plate as coarse as 1/2D ia. are in inventory.

Screens are available in a w ide range of m aterials.Screens of carbon steel, stainless steel (304, 316),alloy 20, m onel 400, hastelloy C and titaniumgrade 2 are in inventory.

C ustom m anufactured screens are available uponrequest. Please consult factory.

    CORRECTION FACTORS FOR CLOGGED SCREENS

    Answer

    A) The Pressure Drop Cha rt indica tes a drop of .13 psidwith standard screen.

B ) The Effec tive Area of TC I is 100% or 1:1.

    C) Using C hart abo ve we read the correction factor of 1:1to be 14.5 at 60% clog ged .

    D) Tota l press ure drop eq uals .13 x 14.5 = 1.885 psid.

    Filtration: 1/8" Perf.

    Flow rate: 200 GPM

    % Clogged: 60%

    Answer

    A) From P ress ure Drop C hart, press ure drop of w ater is 1.25psid

    B ) Multiply by s pec ific g ravity; 1.25 x 1 = 1.25 psid

    C) From c ha rt abo ve, multiply 1.25 x 1.2 (co rrec tion fa cto r) =1.5 psid

Unpac k the s trainer. Inspec t for any da mag eoc curring during tra nsit. Repo rt da ma ge to thecarrier.

Ensure all machined surfaces are free of defectsand that the inside of the strainers is free offoreign ma teria ls.

Verify tha t the c orrec t s ize a nd flang e rating forthe application.

Review the application and chemical compatibilityof the process fluid to the materials of

co nstruction o f the s tra iner. If the strainer application has a mesh liner, it is

importa nt to note the p os ition o f this mes h liner.

As spe cified a t the time of o rder, the mes h lineris on the inside o r outside of the strainer.

Install the strainer into the pipeline between thepipe fla ng es . Ins ure tha t the mes h lining (ifprovided) is facing the flow.

Be sure to insta ll neces sa ry ga skets a nd bo lting.Torq ue bo lts p roperly by us ing s ta nda rd pipingpractices.

Expel air for the pipeline where the strainer isins ta lled . S ta rt sy st em gra dua lly. This w ill

eliminate sudden shock to the strainer and othereq uipment in the line. Close a ny open pipelinevents a fter air is expelled.

The temporary stra iner is a device temporarily insta lled in a pipeline to remove s ed imenta nd de bris from fluids . The temporary stra iner is to be used for piping sta rt-upa pplica tions only. The s tra iner is not to be used permanently insta lled in the processpiping. If a perma nent strainer is req uired a fter sta rt-up, pleas e co ntac t the fac tory and/orrefer to the SSI complete product line of pipeline strainers for your application.

For maximum efficiency, d etermine the length oftime it takes for the pressure drop to double thatin the c lea n c ondition.

Once the press ure drop rea ches an unac cepta blevalue, the s tra iner should be clean a nd/orremoved.

A pressure gauge installed before and after thestrainer in line will indicate pressure loss due toclogging and may be used to determine whencleaning is req uired.

Slowly close the pipeline valves upstream anddo wns trea m for the strainer. Make sure thesevalves are tightly closed.

Relieve the fluid press ure from the pipelinew here the s trainer is insta lled . The pipelinemust b e d rained a nd interna l pres sure relievedprior to remo ving the s trainer. P roc eed toremove the strainer.

WARNING: This prod uct operates in pipelines or with equipment that carries fluids and/or gasses at

elevated temperatures and pressures. Caution should be taken to make sure that this equipment is
