Solemnity of the Most Blessed Trinity 2020

Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Jerome,

Pax Christi semper vobiscum!

The study of human behavior demonstrates that a person who feels unheard often screams to convey a message. However, we know that this is not always the most effective way to communi-cate. Such a behavioral pattern of aggressiveness often brings more conflict rather than resolution to the matter. Sometimes there are individuals who get used to a habit of aggressive be-havior by screaming or having a tantrum whenever they get mad or frustrated with anything. We know for a fact that a peaceful dialogue offers a better possibility to convey a message well. It may efficiently resolve a conflict with a long-lasting im-pact.

We have seen during the last few days a civil unrest that is hap-pening all over the country. The unjust death of George Floyd called the attention of the nation to address once more the issue of racism that has been tormenting society for so many years. There is a sensitive issue from marginalized groups that needs to be heard. The cry for justice that began from Minnesota is now heard in all parts of the world. The cause that the protestors have been trying to convey now has a platform. The spotlight is fo-cused on the people of color who are chanting for a change and asking for more humane treatment. But sadly, there are some who have joined the protest who, without understanding the reason nor the cause of the demonstrations, have destroyed the breeding ground were the message of “the cry for justice” should be heard. The civil disturbance and the violence in various cities of the country has robbed the sympathy of many from the death of Floyd and the call to human equality that could have been effectively conveyed in all parts of the world. How can we do better?

In the beginning of the year, the outbreak of Covid19 in China called the attention of the world. It worsened in the beginning of March when Italy became the topic of every news and social media report as the death toll kept rising each day. As the pan-demic arrived in the U.S. we finally experienced what it meant to live by it. The entire world suddenly entered a health and eco-nomic crisis that we are still experiencing today. Have we heard the message? Might the pandemic be a silent yet violent protest by our Mother Nature who has experienced a tremendous ex-ploitation due to our unjust use of natural resources? When the entire world was suddenly put into quarantine, our Mother Na-ture was also at rest. Industrialization stopped. Production of the polluting waste stopped. The entire human routine stopped. Even the most important aspect of our human connection with God in the form of physical communal worship stopped. Don’t you think that the pandemic was also a way of a natural protest that is also calling us to treat Mother Nature justly? Are we being just stewards and considerate habitants of the earth? Have we gotten the message?

El estudio del comportamiento humano demuestra que una per-sona que se siente desconocida a menudo grita para transmitir un mensaje. Sin embargo, sabemos que esta no siempre es la forma más efectiva de comunicarse. Tal patrón de comportamiento agresivo a menudo trae más conflicto en lugar de resolución al asunto. A veces hay personas que se acostumbran a un hábito de comportamiento agresivo gritando o haciendo un berrinche cada vez que se enojan o se frustran con algo. Sabemos con certeza que un diálogo pacífico ofrece una mejor posibilidad de transmitir bien un mensaje. Puede resolver eficientemente un conflicto con un impacto duradero.

Hemos visto durante los últimos días un descontento civil en todo el país. La muerte injusta de George Floyd llamó la atención de la nación para abordar una vez más el tema del racismo que ha estado atormentando a la sociedad durante tantos años. Hay un tema delicado de los grupos marginados que necesita ser es-cuchado. El clamor por la justicia que comenzó en Minnesota ahora se escucha en todas partes del mundo. La causa que los manifestantes han estado tratando de transmitir ahora tiene una plataforma. La atención se centra en las personas de color que cantan por un cambio y piden un trato más humano. Pero, lamen-tablemente, hay algunos que se han unido a la protesta que, sin comprender la razón ni la causa de las manifestaciones, han destruido el caldo de cultivo en el que se debe escuchar el men-saje del "clamor por la justicia". Los disturbios civiles y la violen-cia en varias ciudades del país han despojado la simpatía de mu-chos por la muerte de Floyd y el llamado a la igualdad humana que podría haberse transmitido de manera efectiva en todas partes del mundo. ¿Cómo podemos hacerlo mejor?

A principios de año, el brote de Covid19 en China llamó la atención del mundo. Empeoró a principios de marzo cuando Ita-lia se convirtió en el tema de todas las noticias y los informes de las redes sociales, ya que el número de muertes seguía aumentan-do cada día. Cuando la pandemia llegó a los Estados Unidos, finalmente experimentamos lo que significaba vivir de acuerdo con ella. El mundo entero entró repentinamente en una crisis económica y de salud que todavía estamos experimentando hoy. ¿Hemos escuchado el mensaje? ¿Podría la pandemia ser una protesta silenciosa pero violenta de nuestra Madre Naturaleza, que ha experimentado una tremenda explotación debido a nues-tro uso injusto de los recursos naturales? Cuando el mundo en-tero fue puesto en cuarentena de repente, nuestra Madre Natura-leza también estaba en reposo. La industrialización se detuvo. Se detuvo la producción de residuos contaminantes. Toda la rutina humana se detuvo. Incluso el aspecto más importante de nuestra conexión humana con Dios en forma de adoración comunitaria física se detuvo. ¿No crees que la pandemia también fue una for-ma de protesta natural que también nos está llamando a tratar a la Madre Naturaleza con justicia? ¿Estamos siendo solo mayor-domos y habitantes considerados de la tierra? ¿Hemos recibido el mensaje?

The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity is an affirmation of the unified love of the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. Since time immemorial, there is only one simple message that God would like to convey to us. It is the message of His unconditional Love. The Bible tells us in various ways how God conveys this mes-sage. Unfortunately, we have not paid attention. May I call the Incarnation of Jesus a loving protest? God protested by coming down from His throne to prove and to convey His message of love. The Triune God agreed amongst each other. The Blessed Trinity were unified in the decision making, don’t you think? The message of love resorted to having the Second Person of the Holy Trinity becoming man to suffer a violent attack, condem-nation, flagellation, psychological and emotional stress, mock-ery, shameful crucifixion, and death. The event that happened to Jesus was the most violent historical fact that we can remem-ber until today. He was trying to convey the message peacefully until He became the message that was preached on the pole of the cross that speaks to us until today. The problem is, have we gotten the message?

You see, there may be a lot of protests in the coming days as a response to social injustices. Violence might continue to erupt to justify anger and demonstrations. But the message would never be heard if we are not the first ones who should hear what it means to live in peace and justice. We cannot deny that racism continues to exist today, but we cannot resolve the issue until we all decide to change our attitude towards one another. Rac-ism has so many forms and facets. It is not simply a question of one’s skin color; rather, it is a question of our attitude towards our fellow human beings while we aim to live justly with the conviction that we are all created in the image and likeness of God.

I pray that the life of the Holy Trinity be our inspiration to change the world in the name of Love.

La solemnidad de la Santísima Trinidad es una afirmación del amor unificado del Padre, del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo. Desde tiempos inmemoriales, solo hay un mensaje simple que Dios quisiera transmitirnos. Es el mensaje de su amor incondicional. La Biblia nos dice de varias maneras cómo Dios transmite este mensaje. Lamentablemente, no hemos prestado atención. ¿Puedo llamar a la Encarnación de Jesús una protesta amorosa? Dios protestó bajando de su trono para probar y transmitir su mensaje de amor. El Dios Triuno estuvo de acuerdo entre ellos. La San-tísima Trinidad se unificó en la toma de decisiones, ¿no te parece? El mensaje de amor recurrió a que la Segunda Persona de la Santísima Trinidad se convirtiera en hombre para sufrir un ataque violento, condena, flagelación, estrés psicológico y emo-cional, burla, crucifixión vergonzosa y muerte. El evento que le sucedió a Jesús fue el hecho histórico más violento que podemos recordar hasta hoy. Él estaba tratando de transmitir el mensaje pacíficamente hasta que se convirtió en el mensaje que se predicó en el poste de la cruz que nos habla hasta hoy. El problema es, ¿hemos recibido el mensaje?

Verá, puede haber muchas protestas en los próximos días como respuesta a las injusticias sociales. La violencia podría seguir estallando para justificar la ira y las manifestaciones. Pero el mensaje nunca se escucharía si no somos los primeros en escu-char lo que significa vivir en paz y justicia. No podemos negar que el racismo sigue existiendo hoy, pero no podemos resolver el problema hasta que todos decidamos cambiar nuestra actitud hacia los demás. El racismo tiene muchas formas y facetas. No se trata simplemente del color de la piel; más bien, es una cuestión de nuestra actitud hacia nuestros semejantes mientras aspiramos a vivir de manera justa con la convicción de que todos somos creados a imagen y semejanza de Dios.

Las últimas noches he visto con gran dolor personal como la ira acumulada de nuestro pueblo se encendió a lo largo de nuestro país. Vi la ciudad donde nací, las ciudades donde he vivido, la ciudad donde soy pastor ahora, atrapar brasas de la ciudad donde fui educado y quemarse. ¿Me horroricé de la violencia? Sí. ¿Pero me sorprendí? No Como reza el dicho, si no estas indignado, no estas prestando atención. ¿Qué esperábamos cuando supimos que, en Minneapolis, una ciudad con frecuencia

aclamada como un modelo de inclusividad, el precio de la vida de una persona de raza negra es un billete de veinte dólares falso? ¿Cuando añadimos otro nombre a la lista de aquellos asesinados por ser negros o por preocuparse por los marginados?

No pretenderé hablar con alguna autoridad acerca de los desafíos que las personas de color experimentan en nuestra sociedad. Yo no comparto el miedo que sienten cuando ellos y sus hijos dejan sus casas cada día. Yo no sé lo que significa ser “otro”. Pero sé que hay una manera de arreglarlo. Y el arreglo comienza cuando dejamos de hablar acerca de la proporcionalidad de “su” respuesta y comenzamos a hablar acerca de la proporcionalidad de la “nuestra”. Ciertamente, una nación que pudo poner a un hombre en el espacio, su seguridad garantizada por la brillantez de mujeres de raza negra, puede crear un sistema legal justo, educación equitativa y oportunidades de empleo y fácil acceso al cuidado a la salud. Las leyes no solucionan problemas, pero crean un sistema donde el racismo en todas sus formas es castigable y los campos de juego se nivelan.

La pandemia de COVID-19 ha sido llamada una gran igualadora. Ha sido aún más una gran reveladora de cánceres de la sociedad, tan mortales como el virus. Estoy listo para unirme a líderes religiosos, cívicos, laborales y comerciales para reunirnos a lanzar un nuevo esfuerzo para traer una recuperación y reconciliación a nuestra ciudad. No necesitamos un estudio de las causas y efectos. Esas respuestas se pueden encontrar en las repisas de oficinas del gobierno e instituciones académicas a lo largo de nuestra nación en llamas. No, necesitamos asumir el arduo trabajo de sanar la profunda herida que ha afectado a nuestro pueblo desde que los primeros barcos de esclavos atracaron en este continente. Y necesitamos comenzar hoy.

The past nights I have watched in

great personal pain as the pent-up anger of our people caught fire across our country. I saw the city where I was born, the cities where I have lived, the city I pastor now, catch embers from the city where I was educated and burn. Was I horrified at the violence? Yes. But was I surprised? No.

As the saying goes, if you’re not outraged, you’re not paying attention. What did we expect when we learned that in Minneapolis, a city often hailed as a model of inclusivity, the price of a black life is a counterfeit twenty-dollar bill? When we added another name to the list of those murdered for being black or for caring about the marginalized?

I will not pretend to speak with any authority about the challenges people of color experience in our society. I do not share the fear they put on when they and their children leave their homes every day. I do not know what it means to be “other.” But I know there is a way to fix it. And the fix begins when we stop talking about the proportionality of “their” response and start talking about the proportionality of “ours.” Surely a nation that could put a man in space, his safety assured by the brilliance of black women, can create a fair legal system, equitable education and employment opportunities and ready access to health care. Laws do not solve problems, but they create a system where racism in all its forms is punished and playing fields are leveled.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been called a great equalizer. It has been even more a great revealer of societal cancers as deadly as the virus. As others have pointed out, health insecurity kills, and poverty is poison. We can and must make a society that views the soaring of a child’s potential with more joy than the soaring of a rocket.

I stand ready to join religious, civic, labor and business leaders in coming together to launch a new effort to bring about recovery and reconciliation in our city. We do not need a study of the causes and effects. Those answers can be found on the shelves of government offices and academic institutions across our burning nation. No, we need to take up the hard work of healing the deep wound that has afflicted our people since the first slave ships docked on this continent. And we need to start today.

La cuarentena me trajo muchos cambios y una manera diferente a como ver las cosas. Para empezar, siempre he sido fiel a mi fe y esto me ayuda mucho a seguir adelante. Siento que mi fe me protege. Pero estoy consciente de que tengo que poner de mi parte para mantenerme saludable. Para empezar, soy de los que se consideran como trabajador esencial. Esto quiere decir que mi empleador sigue abierto y mi trabajo sigue. La pandemia ha traído mucho más trabajo para nosotros y esto quiere decir que estamos más expuestos al virus. Al principio pensaba en cambiar mis horas y reducir el tiempo en el que estaría con el público, pero pronto me di cuenta de que esta acción

seria egoísta y hay muchos más en mi equipo de trabajo que no tienen esta misma opción que yo. Así que decidí no hacer cambios. Al contrario, decidí encontrar más formas de cómo reducir la posibilidad de estar en contacto con el virus para todos en mi equipo y tienda. Siempre me dije, “Si tu fe te pone a pensar que eres protegido por Dios y siempre hay alguien que te pone en sus oraciones, entonces no temas que solo Dios sabe lo que hace y no pierdas la fe que él te protegerá.”

Esto me ayudó mucho a seguir trabajando y a la misma ves ayudar a mi equipo a seguir adelante. Pero soy humano y padre de tres preciosas hijas y de repente llega aquel pensamiento: “Que pasara si por estar trabajando tanto agarras el virus? ¿Qué pasaría si no te das cuenta que lo tienes y afectas a la familia entera? ¿Cómo afectaría a Saraí de 4 meses, a Abigail de 2 años y a Michelle de 5 años? ¿Con que cara enfrentarías a la familia entera?

Espero nunca tener que contestar esas preguntas. Siempre me mantendré en oración. Sé que mi familia también pide porque este protegido y las oraciones son escuchadas.

Anhelo regresar a la iglesia. Espero poder darle poco de mi talento a quien me ha dado todo. Espero poder ver la cara de Jesús crucificado y María y darle las gracias por haber escuchado todas las oraciones y por mantenerme alejado del mal. Pero más importante, por cuidar de mi familia y por hacerme fuerte en mi fe.

Music Ministry Reflections during the Quarantine | Reflexiones del Ministerio de Música durante la Cuarentena

The quarantine brought me many changes and

a different way of seeing things. For starters, I have always been faithful to my

faith and this helps me a lot to keep going. I feel that my faith protects me. But I am aware that I have to do my part to stay healthy.

For starters, I am one of those who consider themselves an essential worker. This means that my employer remains open and my work continues. The pandemic has brought much more work for us and this means that we are more exposed to the virus. At first I thought about changing my hours and reducing the time I would be with the public, but I soon realized that this action would be selfish and there are many more on my team who do not have this same option as me. So I decided not to make changes. Rather, I decided to find more ways how to reduce the chance of being in contact with the virus for everyone on my computer and store. I always said to myself, "If your faith makes you think that you are protected by God and there is always someone who puts you in his prayers, then do not fear that only God knows what he does and do not lose the faith that he will protect you."

This helped me a lot to continue working and at the same time help my team to move forward. But I am human and the father of three beautiful daughters and suddenly that thought comes: “What if, by working so hard, you catch the virus? What if you don't realize you have it and affect the entire family? How would it affect 4-month-old Saraí, 2-year-old Abigail and 5-year-old Michelle? What face would you face the whole family?

I hope I never have to answer those questions. I will always stay in prayer. I know that my family also asks why I am protected and prayers are heard.

I long to return to church. I hope I can give little of my talent to the one who has given me everything. I hope I can see the face of Jesus crucified and Mary and thank him for having heard all the prayers and for keeping me away from evil. But more importantly, for taking care of my family and for making me strong in my faith.
