El Presente Progresivo(the present progressive)

To say what is happening right now…at this

moment.

Ellos están prestando atención.

Slash está tocando la guitarra.

El chico está durmiendo.

El bebé está escuchando la música.

El alumno está haciendo la tarea.

Los niños están leyendo un libro.

El muchacho está tirando la basura.

Ella está escribiendo en su cuaderno.

What do they all have in common?

1. All use a form of estar.

2. All have a participle that ends in “ando” or “iendo”.

3. All describe what someone is doing.

The present progressive describes an action that is in progress.

It means someone is …ing something

right now.

Use a form of estar in the present tense

PLUS…

the present participle (of an action verb)

for –ar verbs: drop the –ar and add –andohablar hablando

for –er verbs: drop the –er and add –iendocomer comiendo

for –ir verbs: drop the –ir and add –iendosalir saliendo
