ANNOUNCING THE PUBLICATION OF THE FIRSTBOOK IN A COMPLETE ORAL-AURAL SPANISH
COURSE FOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS
ESPANOL - Entender yHablar
GREGORY G. LAGRONE, The University of TexasANDREA SENDON McHENRY, Houston Texas Public Schools
PATRICIA O'CONNOR, Brown University
This month Holt, Rinehart and Winstan publishes the firstbook of a three-book, three-year Spanish series for junior highschools and high schools. With it appears its outstandingteacher's manual and its full complement of supplementaryteaching aids-flashcards, a workbook, tests, disc and taperecordings. Espaiol; entender y hablar is part of a projectthat will include integrated courses in French and German, aswell as Spanish.
The authors of this first Spanish book have applied alltheir ingenuity to make the course systematic, pedagogicallysound, and fun to teach. Te first book alone is filled withinnovations: systematic recurrence of every item of vocabularyand syntax was assured by using a punch card system: the basic
Spanish dialogues were checked by a dozen Spanish teachers, from Spanish and most Latin American countries, for currency, acceptability to all, and naturalness: moreover, the tapes (whichfeature a splendid cast, sound effects and music) were recorded
before the book went to press, and several small improvementswere made when perfectly correct wrltten Spanish did't speakwell. The teacher's manual, the Guia del Maestro, gives virtual-
ly a step-by-step classroom proceedure for the effective presen-tation of every lesson. It also includes suggestions about whereand how the supplementary aids can be used to best effect.
In order to appreciate fully the many ingenious featuresin this first book of our new series, you should write for anexamination copy. Or, see the more complete description inour 1961 Foreign Language Catalogue.
