The city of Berkeley is located thirty minutes by car over the Bay Bridge

from San Francisco. On the east side of the city the leafy campus of

the University of California stretches to the mountains and on the west

side the grid of city streets extends to the ocean. This project will be

located on the border between the two.

The art museum and film archive have been independent but we decided

to combine them into a single structure and integrate various other

functions as well. The art galleries, a theater, a library, a cafe, a shop,

and offices will all share functionality and researchers as well as the

general public will create a lively space link ing inside and outside and

the green of the campus with the energy of the city.

We have t r ied to create a si tua t ion in wh ich each separa te space

relates to the others according to simple r ules even as they are inhab-

ited in different ways.

Berkeley se encuentra a treinta minutos en coche de San Francisco, atrave-

sando el Puente de la Baha. En el lado este de la ciudad el frondoso campus

de la Universidad de California se despliega hacia las montaas; y en el lado

oeste la retcula urbana se extiende hasta el ocano. Justo en el borde entre

ambos lados se sita este proyecto.

El museo de arte y el archivo cinematogrfico han sido instituciones inde-

pendientes, pero se decidi combinarlas en un nico edificio que integrase

adems otros usos. Las salas de exposiciones, un teatro, una biblioteca,

una cafetera, una tienda y las oficinas compartirn funciones; y los inves-

tigadores y el pblico general crearn al usarlos un escenario vital que

conectar el interior con el exterior, y el verde del campus con la energa

de la ciudad. Hemos intentado establecer una situacin en la cual cada

espacio concreto se relacione con los dems a partir de reglas sencillas,

aunque tengan usos distintos.

El espacio se configura a partir de una retcula acorde con la escala, la forma y la relacin de cada funcin,

con sus extremos ligeramente curvados hacia los puntos de interseccin y conectados en los ngulos

opuestos. Las esquinas que definen cada sala se han despegado una a una para crear continuidad entre ellas.

Despegando las partes ms bajas es posible ir y volver de una sala a otra; y hacer lo propio con las partes

superiores de cada sala crea continuidad visual. No hay una jerarqua espacial entre salas y corredores: un

continuo ininterrumpido de salas se abre hacia un paisaje donde distintas cosas entran y salen del campo

de visin. Los muros son estructurales, realizados en hormign dispuesto entre dos lminas de acero de

slo 127 milmetros de espesor.Est e espesor se pone de manifiesto en las secciones de la fachada,t ransmitiendo

al exterior la atmsfera suave del interior.

The space is based on a grid drawn according to the scale, form, and relation of each function, the

edges curving softly toward the points of inters ection and connecting at opposite corners. The corners

that define each room are peeled back one by one to create c ontinuity among the rooms. Peeling back

the lower portions makes it possible to go back and forth between the rooms and peeling back the

upper parts creates vis ual continuity. There is no spatial hierarchy of rooms and corridors: an unbroken

continuation of rooms opens up onto a landscape in which various things come in and out of the field

of vision. The walls are structural walls made of concrete sandwiched between two steel plates only

127mm thick. This thickness is revealed in the sections on the facade, communicating to the outside

the soft atmosphere of the interior.

Introduciendo cambios mnimos en un sencillo sistema reticular surgen relaciones muy abstractas pero diversas. Y aunque el espacio est fragmentado por mltiples

paredes, conserva su carcter continuo y anticipa a los visitantes una serie de encuentros imprevistos. Hemos decidido dejar educadamente a un lado el contenedor

perfecto tipo 'cubo blanco'. Creemos que esta nueva espacialidad aadir sorpresa y libertad a la experiencia de contemplar arte.

Introducing minor changes into an extremely simple grid system creates highly abstract but diverse relationships. And although the space is segmented by

multiple walls, it still retains a sense of continuity and beckons visitors toward a series of unanticipated encounters. We have taken the perfect 'white cube'

container and gently pulled it apart. We believe this will add enormous jolts and freedom to the experience of viewing art.
