GET, LA PALABRA COMODÍN EN INGLÉS

Cuando estamos empezando a estudiar inglés siempre nos dicen que la

 palabra GET  significa obtener o conseguir en español. Evidentemente lo

damos por hecho por qué no hay motivo para no creer a un profesor, ¿no?

Sin embargo, a mí nunca me dijeron la cantidad de significados que podía

tener esta palabra y lo frecuentemente que es usada por los hablantes

nativos. Me parece fundamental e imprescindible dominar todos y cada uno

de los significados puesto que si lo hacemos, vamos a tener muchas más

salidas y respuestas en el inglés que hablemos día a día, y también nos va a

ayudar a comprender mucho mejor el contexto de cualquier situación. ¿No

os ha pasado que estáis viendo la televisión en inglés, meten la palabra  get  

indiscriminadamente y no os enteráis de su significado en cada caso? Pues

 bien, voy a tratar de aclarar y explicar todos los significados habituales para

que eso no os pase más.

LOS 6 PRINCIPALES USOS DE GET

GET = BECOME

La palabra get adopta este significado cuando es usado delante de un

adjetivo. Significa que estás empezando a convertirte (become) en ese

adjetivo en concreto.

- If I were you I would eat now, otherwise you will get hungry later.

- He gets really angry when he loses a tennis match.

- I think he is going on a diet, because he is getting very skinny.

GET = ARRIVE

Cuando usamos arrive en una conversación suena demasiado formal. Dicha

 palabra se suele usar en contexto de viajes, aeropuertos o negocios. Es por

eso que a un inglés difícilmente le oirás decir arrive, sino que usarán get. 

- What time did you get to the airport?

- I’ll let you know when I get to the train station.

GET = OBTAIN/BUY

- Normalmente se suele usar buy cuando quieres aclarar específicamenteque has comprado algo. Si este hecho no es realmente importante, es

 preferible utilizar get.

- I got this amazing shorts to wear to the friendly match.

- She got all the furniture from the same shop center.

GET = RECEIVE

Este caso es parecido al de arrive. Queda demasiado formal usar la palabra

receive.

- I got an email every day from Emma, she is so nice!

- I got the present I always wanted for my birthday, I’m so excited! 

GET = UNDERSTAND

Se pueden usar indistintamente, get es más informal pero no queda

inapropiado en una conversación formal, así que lo podéis usar al gusto.

- Do you get what I’ve just told you? 

- Yes, I get it!

GET= FETCH

Básicamente la usamos para cuando queremos coger una cosa y traerla de

vuelta. No usar take en estos casos.

- Can you get me a glass of water please?

- I am going to get her from work

PHRASAL VERBS CON LA PALABRA GET

Los siguientes phrasal verbs pueden tener más de un significado pero voy a

tratar de explicar los más comunes y usados.

Get across: hacer entender.

- He is trying to get his point across but I think no one is paying atention.

Get ahead: salir adelante.

- You need to be very patient if you want to get ahead in business.

Get along/by: arreglárselas.

Blind people need to learn how to get along without seeing.

Get along with: llevarse bien.

I get along really well with my friend Jesse.

Get away: escaparse

Someone tried to robbed me this morning but I managed to get away.

Get away with: salirse con la suya

I really admire Luke, he always get away with it!

Get back : volver

She needs to get back to work right now as she’s left her car keys there. 

Get behind: respaldar

I’ll get behind you as long as you promise me to do your best. 

Get down: bajar

The bus driver got down the bus to check one of the back wheels.

Get down to: ir al grano

Let’s go down to business! 

Get in: entrar

Get in the car, now!

Get off : apearse

Could you get off my bike? I want to use it!

Get on: llevarse bien

How do you get on with your brother?

Get out: ¡fuera de aquí!

Why are you in the middle of the road? Get out!

Get over: recuperarse

I had a bad injury a few weeks ago but I am getting over really quickly.

Get round: persuadir

Don’t you dare to get round me with flowers! 

Get through: superar

We will get through the crisis in Spain.

Get together: reunirse

The staff need to get together to solve the problem they had.

Get up: levantarse

I don’t feel like getting up early tomorrow, I’m so tired!

Desahacerse de alguien, quitarse de en medio a alguien (también usado

 para desahacerse de objetos).

- I’m getting the hang of it

Le estoy pillando el truco

- Don’t get me wrong 

 No me malinterpretes

- Get well soon!
