#1: Volcán Izalco If you choose the Izalco Volcano, you’re in for an intense, steep and rocky hike to the sum-mit. Revel in your achievement while standing atop the perfect peak, and make sure to get great photos of the moon-like crater and the panoramic views of the country below.

#2: Volcán Ilamatepec If you choose to hike the tallest volcano in the country, Ilamatepec (2,365 mts or 6,404 ft.), or locally known as Santa Ana, you’ll hike through the high plateau and dwarf forests filled with gigantic maguey plants - a unique landscape in all of Mesoamerica. At the top you’ll feel the heat of the volcano’s boiling cra-ter lake. This aquamarine pool is over 300 me-ters (984 ft.) deep!

By Car: Take the highway from San Salvador toward Sonsonate. At the turn

to Cerro Verde, take a right at the Esso gas sta-tion. Follow this road straight for 25-30 min., until reaching an intersection with several large signs, pointing to Cerro Verde. On the right side there is a rocky road going uphill, this is the en-trance to Las Brumas. There is a sign that says “Casa de Cristal”.

By Bus:Take the 201 or 202 bus from the western terminal in San Salvador.

Then take the 248 bus at the El Congo intersec-tion. Get off at Cerro Verde and follow the signs to Casa de Cristal.

Parque Nacional Montecristo: Orquídeas y Bosques Nebulosos

Con una extensión de 1,973 hectáreas para explorar, el Parque Nacional Montecristo

es la mejor reserva de vida silvestre el país y el refugio a una biodiversidad altísima. Forma parte del Sistema de Áreas Naturales Protegi-das de El Salvador, y además es parte del Área Protegida Trinacional Montecristo, compartida con Guatemala y Honduras.

Es una calle de tierra y con bastante inclinación, por lo que se recomienda un vehículo 4x4, prin-cipalmente en invierno.

Parque Nacional Montecristo: Orquídeas y Bosques Nebulosos

In Montecristo National Park (1,973 hect-ares), cloud forests, evergreen and oak for-

ests, and cypress plantations will be your back-drop as you explore along the trails, enjoying the cool temperatures and beautiful views. This park is said to be perhaps El Salvador’s most outstanding wildlife sanctuary and home to a fantastic diversity of flora.

Montecristo forms part of El Salvador’s Nation-al System of Protected Areas. It is also part of the Montecristo Trinational Protected Area, which is shared by Guatemala and Honduras.

Here, you will be able to learn about iron min-ing, indigo fields, sugar cane and coffee pro-duction. Visit the beautiful historic hacienda that dates back over 220 years, and make sure you ask for the 100 Year Garden (Jardin de 100 Años), where hundreds of exotic orquid species are carefully tended to and on display.

By Car: From San Salvador take high-way CA-1 toward Santa Ana. Take the turn onto highway CA-12 toward

Metapán. Once in Metapán look for Hotel San Jose, and at that corner, turn toward the park. From Metapán you will travel 5 km. to the entry office. After the entry office, drive 12 km. to the area called Los Planes.

The dirt road is very steep and it is recommend-ed that only 4x4 vehicles travel there, especially during the rainy season (May-October).

By Bus: There is no public transpor-tation available from Metapán to the park.

Transporte Público: Tomas el bus en la ter-minal del Sur en San Marcos Ruta 302 a Usulután. Luego tomas en la terminal de Usulután y/o Salida de Usulután a San Mi-guel. Espera el bus que conduce a Puerto Parada, el bus es único.

¿Cómo llego?En Vehículo: Desde San Salvador tome la autopista hacia el aeropuerto RN-5S, luego se desvía para tomar la carretera del litoral

hacia el oriente del país CA-2E. Al llegar al Puente de Oro y unos metros después del puente toma la calle hacia la derecha que lleva a Isla de Méndez. Continúa por esta calle hasta el final y luego cruza a su izquierda tomando una calle de tierra por unos ocho kilómetros hasta llegar a la comunidad de Isla de Méndez.

Transporte Público: Toma la ruta 302 en la terminal sur. Bajese en la parada de San Marcos Lempa a unos pasos del Puente

de Oro. De ahí, tome la ruta 378 hacia la Isla de Mendez. Nota: Sólo hay dos buses al día. Uno parte a las 12:15 pm y el otro a la 1:20 pm.

Location: Isla de Méndez, Bahía de Jiquilisco, UsulutánTime from San Salvador: 1h 45 min.

By Car: From San Salvador, take the high-way toward the Comalapa Airport. Then

turn east along the coastal highway CA-2E and con-tinue on this road until reaching Puente de Oro (golden bridge). A few meters after the bridge, take the street to the right that will take you to Isla de Mendez. Stay on this road until it ends, and then turn left on to a dirt road. Take this dirt road 13 km. until reaching the Isla de Mendez community.

By Bus: From San Salvador, take Route 302 from the southern terminal. Get off at the San Marcos Lempa stop that is a

few meters past the Puente de Oro (golden bridge). From there, take Route 378 all th way to the Isla de Mendez community. Note: there are only two buses per day to Isla de Mendez. One leaves at 12:15PM, the other leaves at 1:20PM.

By Car: From San Salvador, take the high-way RN-5S toward the airport. Then take

the coastal highway (CA-2E) east toward San Luis La Herradura. Before reaching San Luis La Herradura, take RN-4E toward Costa del Sol and continue until the end of the highway which is known as La Puntil-la. Here you will take the boat to Isla Tasajera.

By bus: Take route 495 from the southern terminal in San Salvador. This will take you direc-tly to La Puntilla where you will take the boat to Isla Tasajera.

By Car: From San Salvador, take the highway to Sonsonate (CA-8) to the

coastal highway (Carretera del Litoral, CA-2). Dri-ve a few kilometers past “Kilo 5” and take a left at the Club Salinitas turn. Drive approximately 8 Km. (5 mi.) to Los Cóbanos. It is 19 km. (11.8 mi.) from Sonsonate and 84 km. (52 mi.) from San Salvador.

By Bus: Take the 205 from San Salva-dor to Sonsonate. Take the 257 from Sonsonate.

dentes y migratorias. En el recorrido te llevaremos por el bosque de mangle, los cultivos de curi-les, una colonia de cientos de coclarios (aves marinas) y podrás practicar la pesca artesanal. Una experiencia maravillosa en la Reserva de Biosfera Bahía de Jiquilisco.

Transporte Público: Tomas el bus en la terminal del Sur en San Marcos Ruta 302 a Usulutan. Luego tomas en la terminal de Usulutan y/o Salida de

Usulután a San Miguel. Espera el bus que con-duce a Puerto Parada, el bus es único.

¿Qué llevar? Traje de baño, gorra, toalla, sandalias, repelente, lentes de sol, protector solar, ropa fresca,

zapatos cómodos, binoculares. Se proporcio-na chalecos salvavidas. Recomendable saber nadar.

¿Cómo llego?En Vehículo: Te vas por el Litoral al este, pasas por la ciudad de Usulután, al terminar de pasar el centro te encuen-

tras con un super mercado La Despensa de Don Juan. Como a 200 metros siguiendo recto, por la misma calle, hay una ferretería en la esquina y allí, en una calle pavimentada cruzas a la dere-cha, no hay rótulo que diga Puerto Parada.*Si te encuentras con un SuperSelectos, significa que ya te pasaste y que tienes que regresar.

Cuando ya cruzaste a la derecha, sigues la calle recto recto hasta el fondo que es Puerto Parada. Al final de la calle, ya en Puerto Parada, cruzas a la derecha, y buscas el Restaurante Xiriualtique, alli puedes dejar el carro. En ese restaurante, si consumes algo, una soda, un jugo o algo, ya no te cobran el parqueo.

Jiquilisco Biosphere Reserve

Enjoy the white sands beaches and natural beauty of one of the most incredible places in Bahia de Jiquilisco, Isla Pajarito or Little Bird Island. This is a favorite spot for many resident and mi-

gratory birds. On this tour you’ll be able to explore mangrove forests and oyster farms, see flocks of hundreds of sea birds, and try your hand at artisan fishing. This is an excellent experience in the Bahia de Jiquilisco Biosphere Reserve.

By Car: Take the coastal highway east until you reach Usulutan. After passing through downtown Usulutan, you will come to the

supermarket: La Despensa de Don Juan. About 200 meters ahead, along the same road, you will see a hardware store or “ferreteria” on the corner. At that corner, turn right and follow the paved road. There is no sign pointing toward Puerto Parada.*If you reached the other supermarket, Super Selec-tos, you’ve gone too far and need to turn back.

After turning right toward Puerto Parada, continue straight until reaching the town of Puerto Parada. At the end of the road (in the town of Puerto Parada), turn right and look for Restaurante Xiriualtique, where you can park. If you buy a food or drink in the restau-rant, they will not charge for parking.
