With the Reformation, some early Protestants, including the “Anabaptists,” rejected infant baptism in favor of “believer’s baptism.” Against Orthodox and Catholic practice, which favored baptism as soon as possible for a newborn, these movements desired that the candidate for baptism speak for him- or herself at a mature age, not through godparents as an infant. Today, it is clear that they were rejecting a very ancient practice (even as early as the second century) of baptizing children of all ages. Children came first in ancient baptis-mal ceremonies, and someone would speak for them. Gregory of Nazianzen wanted to delay the baptism of children to three years of age, since at that age they could retain at least some impression of the liturgy. He made an exception for the very ill, who were to be bap-tized ahead of the annual Easter baptism. That means that infants and children were normally baptized together with adults, and that everyone received confir-mation and the Eucharist. The tone of the early bishops’ writings is gener-ous and compassionate, and seeks to build up the eucha-ristic assembly by widely celebrating the gift of the Holy Spirit. If a priest celebrated baptism, then the gift of the Spirit was postponed for the bishop, but with no regard for the person’s age. En el año 2001, Carlos Manuel Rodríguez Santiago se convirtió en el primer laico caribeño beatificado por la Iglesia. Su vida fue ejemplar en la caridad y en el amor a la liturgia, pues promovió la partici-pación de los fieles de una manera activa, mucho antes de que el Concilio Vaticano II así lo pidiera. En 1963 una colitis rectal muy severa lo llevó a los

brazos de Cristo resucitado, a la edad de 44 años. Carlitos, como muchos lo llaman, trabajó en la Universidad de Puerto Rico y fundó un grupo apostólico laical en el Centro Católico de dicha universidad. Allí pudo obrar por el desarrollo del hu-manismo cristiano, la participación activa de los laicos en la liturgia de la Iglesia y

por la renovación de la Vigilia Pascual. Solía decir que los cristianos “vivimos para esa noche” como cumbre y centro de nuestra fe. Carlitos es modelo para los laicos compro-metidos con su fe. As you are aware there was severe storm dam-age in the Adoration Chapel of Saint Joseph's Church. This caused Eucharistic Adoration to

be suspended until further notice. We have dealt with Insurance Companies, and compa-nies that can assist in the repairing of water

soaked walls and ceilings.

Work has finally begun on the cause of the problems, and the repair of the damage. This

will take some time, and continued under-standing on your part. Completion of this pro-

ject is still a few weeks away, I apologize for any inconvenience. As always, thank you for

The day concludes with the Celebration of Mass about 4PM. This will be a good opportunity to see Fr. Roy Tvrdik be-fore he leaves on his sabbatical to the Holy Land. USCCB Statement on Supreme Court "Hobby Lobby" Decision "A great day for the religious freedom of fami-ly businesses." We welcome the Supreme Court’s decision to recognize that Americans can continue to follow their faith when they run a family business. In this case, justice has prevailed, with the Court respecting the rights of the Green and Hahn fam-ilies to continue to abide by their faith in how they seek their livelihood, without facing devas-tating fines. Now is the time to redouble our efforts to build a culture that fully respects religious freedom. The Court clearly did not decide whether the so-called ‘accommodation’ violates RFRA when applied to our charities, hospitals and schools, so many of which have challenged it as a burden on their religious exercise. Coakley. The Court unanimously declared un-constitutional a Massachusetts law barring pro-life advocates from public sidewalks near abortion facilities. Cardinal Seán P. O’Malley of Boston, chairman of the U.S. bishops’ Committee on Pro-Life Activities, issued the following statement. “Today the Supreme Court found unconstitutional a Massachu-setts law imposing criminal penalties on pro-life Americans who peacefully pray for and offer alternatives to pregnant women approaching abortion clinics. This discriminatory law barred these citizens from gathering on nearby public sidewalks, while exempting ‘clinic escorts’ trained to expedite women into the facility. Clearly this was an attack on pro-life Americans’ free-dom of speech, and we welcome the Court’s decision to overturn the law. “This now overturned legislation reflects an ominous trend in our society. Abortion supporters, having long denied that unborn children have a right to life, would deny that their fellow Ameri-cans who seek to protect the unborn have the same rights as oth-er Americans – the right to freedom of speech and freedom of association; the right to participate in the public square and serve the vulnerable in accord with our moral convictions. Increasing-ly we see this trend evidenced at various levels of government. SAIL's Recovery Case Management & Services

program is a team comprised of Case Managers and

Clinicians (licensed social workers; specializing in mental health and

substance abuse), who provide case management and supportive

counseling services to those impacted by Superstorm Sandy. Case

management services help individuals and families learn how to access and secure resources available, and help mitigate any disaster-related issues

surrounding housing, finance, entitlements, community integration, employment, disaster preparedness,

physical issues, emotional support, etc. Supportive counseling services help individuals and families manage the

emotional impacts of Superstorm Sandy to help decrease and manage symptoms of post traumatic stress,

anxiety, depression, anger, substance abuse, stress, etc. Support groups are also facilitated to bring community

members together to work collaboratively in their recovery

efforts. Services are FREE, confidential, and brought to you in

settings including homes, work, libraries, community centers,

places of worship, etc.

We often hear people questioning how we can keep the faith alive for our young people.

You can do that by making a donation to the Catholic Ministries Appeal! Every day, young people in our community are growing in their faith and sometimes even being brought to the Catholic Faith for the first time. People like David. David became involved in Campus Ministry at LIU-Post when the Campus Chaplain, ap-proached him and asked if he would like to help make sandwiches for the poor. “I began coming to the group meetings and attending Mass but I wasn’t able to participate in Holy Communion because I hadn’t yet received the Sacraments. My most memorable activity here was when I was Confirmed. It was so wonderful finding a place where I really belonged. I feel like I am ready to go out into the World and be a leader because of what I have learned from my faith through this program,” shared David.

More than 3,000 young people a month participate in Campus Ministry Programs in our Diocese.

The Catholic Ministries Appeal is also important for so many other ministries and programs that help our chil-dren grow in our faith, including religious education programs for more than 100,000 of our young people in public schools, as well as youth and young adult ministry programs that serve more than 5,000 each month.

Your support helps to inspire our young adults to live and love their faith.

GIVING OF ONESELF Scientists have recently begun to discuss the idea that the primary force behind all life in the universe is self-gift. This is how everything from galaxies to human babies are born and sustained. If we read the opening of today’s passage from Isaiah correctly, we see that he anticipated twentieth-century scientists by over twenty five hundred years. Using the self-giving example of the rain and snow clouds that water the earth that then yields fruit, which in turn is given over to nourish creatures, Isaiah leads us to understand that the primary force behind all life is the word of God. The ultimate giving of that word, we believe, was Jesus Christ, who, in the greatest revelation of divine love, gave of himself on the cross. To what degree are we in touch with that self-giving God in whose image we are made? To what ex-tent do we really follow the self-giving example of Christ into whose death and resurrection we were bap-tized, whose ultimate self�gift we celebrate every week in the Eucharist? With God’s help, our lives can be like Isaiah’s rain and snow, and we will not return to heaven until we have done our part to make the earth fruitful. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

RENUNCIAR A SÍ MISMO Los científicos recientemente empezaron a de-batir el hecho de que la fuerza primordial detrás de toda vida en el universo es la entrega de sí. Eso es lo que hace

nacer y lo que sostiene a todo, desde galaxias a bebés. Si leemos la apertura del pasaje de Isaías de hoy correctamente, escuchamos que él se adelantó a los científicos por unos 2500 años. Usando el ejemplo de la lluvia y la nieve que dan su agua a la tierra para que pueda dar fruto, que a su vez da su fruto para alimentar las criaturas, Isaías nos lleva a entender que la fuerza primaria detrás de toda la vida, es la palabra de Dios. El mejor ejemplo de esa en-

trega de sí, creemos que fue Jesucristo, quien, en la rev-elación más grande del amor divino, se entregó en la cruz. ¿Hasta qué punto estamos en contacto con Dios que se entrega y en cuya imagen hemos sido creados? ¿Hasta qué punto seguimos el ejemplo de entrega de Cris-to en cuya muerte y resurrección fuimos bautizados; cuya entrega suprema celebramos cada semana en la Eu-caristía?
