Young learners (YLs) are children from 6-12years old* (the most vital age in a childsdevelopment).

    YLLs Characteristics1.A

Although we identify YLLs to be from theages of 6 to 12, they should not begeneralized into a homogenous group butbroken down into subgroups.

A single year of age can make a hugedifference among children; thus detailedanalysis is needed to identify differencesbetween them that significantly changes theway they learn from one or two years to thenext.

    YLLs Characteristics1.A

As the concept teaching English to young learnerssuggests, age plays a crucial role in what we teach andhow we teach it, since a young learner class is differentfrom an adult or young adult class in terms of thelearners language learning needs, the languagecompetences emphasized, and the cognitive skillsaddressed. Thatswhy, it is highly important to showthe differences of these learner groups keeping inmind the fact that every learner is unique and suchlists can only reflect generalizations

YOUNG LEARNER CHARACTERISTICS IMPLICATIONS FOR TEACHING

Capacity for play and fun Allow for plenty of opportunities to explore languathrough activities and games that motivate learner

Capacity for indirect learning: tendency to respond to

meaning and the situation rather than to language

Focus language concepts on functions and the

meaning of the target language, rather than on

    individual grammatical or lexical items.

Need to feel relaxed/safe Establish routines. Create a learning environment

where learners feel valued and important.

Learning from social interaction Language practice and consolidation should involv

working in a variety of interaction patterns. Some learners have definite views about their

    preferences.

Involve learners in choosing activities they find

interesting so that their motivation level is high.

Using limited language at their disposal creatively Create opportunities for a variety of language outp

such as drawing, brainstorming, miming, etc.

Some children may already understand abstracts,

    generalise and systematise

Choose topics that are more broad and introduce

activities that are increasingly cognitively challengi

Individual learning styles Plan activities that address and satisfy all learning

    styles.
