Course of Action

스턴트 아카데미총에 맞고, 고층 빌딩에서 떨어지고, 달리는 차에 매달려

끌려가거나 불길 속에 갇히는 일을 직업으로 삼은 이들. 바로

스턴트 배우다. ‘호주 스턴트 아카데미’에서 미래의 스턴트

연기자를 꿈꾸며 훈련에 매진 중인 학생들을 만났다.

앤절라 시펄은 14미터 높이의 탑 가장자리에 아슬아슬하게 서

있었다. 그녀는 갑자기 뒤로 넘어져 공중으로 떨어졌다. 공포에

질린 표정으로 팔다리를 허우적대며 아래로 추락했다. 총에 맞은

것이다. 잠시 뒤, 시펄이 바닥에 설치한 에어백 위로 착지하자

누군가 ‘컷!’ 하고 외쳤고, 그녀는 에어백 위를 굴러 일어서더니

싱긋 웃어 보였다. 몇 시간 뒤 시펄은 화염에 휩싸일 텐데, 스턴트

배우를 꿈꾸는 학생에게 그 정도 일은 다반사다.

호주 동부 골드코스트에 위치한 ‘호주 스턴트 아카데미’

는 스턴트 업계에서 일하기 위해 고공 낙하, 화염 속 연기, 곡예

운전과 같은 고난도 스턴트 기술을 배우려는 이들을 위해 설립된

작지만 대단히 전문적인 학교다. 교장이자 지도 교사인 콜린

핸들리가 28년 전 이 학교의 문을 열었다.

“태권도 호주 챔피언이자 전업 무술 지도사로 일하던

1984년에 액션 배우 척 노리스를 만났죠. 우린 애들레이드의

한 체육관에서 함께 훈련했고, 이후 저는 할리우드로 건너가

노리스가 소개해 준 많은 사람을 만났습니다. <록키 4>의

실베스터 스탤론, <블루문 특급>에 출연한 브루스 윌리스, <블랙

문 라이징>의 주연을 맡은 토미 리 존스 등 대단한 배우들과 함께

일할 수 있었습니다. 운이 좋았죠.” 핸들리의 말이다.

Suddenly, she falls backward into the air, arms flailing,

legs pinwheeling, her expression panicked. She’s just

been shot. A moment later, she lands on her back on an

airbag, someone yells, “Cut!” and she rolls off, gets to

her feet and grins. A few hours later, she’ll be set on fire.

Welcome to a day in the life of a student stuntwoman.

Located on Australia’s Gold Coast, the Australian Stunt

Academy is a specialized school where those who want

to work in the stunt industry come to learn skills like high

falls, fire burns and stunt driving. Principal and instructor

Colin Handley opened the school 28 years ago. “I met

Chuck Norris in 1984 when I was a full-time martial arts

instructor and Australian champion, and we trained in a

gym in Adelaide together. Then I went to Hollywood, where

he introduced me to lots of people,” Handley says. “I was

fortunate enough to work with all the greats: Sylvester

Stallone on Rocky IV, Bruce Willis on Moonlighting, Tommy

Lee Jones on Black Moon Rising and more.”

태권도 국가 대표팀 선발 훈련에 참여하고자 호주로 돌아왔다.

“호주에 돌아와 있는 동안, 드라마 <네이버스>의 캐스팅 담당자가

미국 영어 악센트를 여전히 구사할 수 있느냐고 묻더군요.

저는 그렇다고 답했고, 그 드라마 여주인공의 상대역인 미국인

백만장자 역할로 3개월간 출연했습니다. 즐거운 경험이었고,

그 후에도 종종 연기를 했지만, 스턴트 배우를 양성할 학교가

필요하다는 사실을 절감했죠.” 핸들리는 1990년 호주 스턴트

아카데미를 창립했으며, 이 학교를 거쳐 간 500명이 넘는

졸업생에게 스턴트 지식과 기술을 전수했다.

호주 스턴트 아카데미는 매년 전문가 과정을 세 차례, 중급

과정을 한 차례 진행하며, 미국 할리우드에서도 고급 과정을 한

차례 운영한다. 또 스턴트를 경험하고자 하는 일반인을 위한

1일 체험반도 개설해 운영 중이다. 개교 이래 학생 구성이 많이

변하긴 했지만 보통 다양한 국적과 연령의 수강생들로 구성된다.

“처음 학교를 열었을 때는 95퍼센트 정도가 남학생, 나머지

5퍼센트만 여학생이었죠.” 핸들리의 설명이다. “지금은 한 반에

1~2명이 여학생입니다.” 학교의 명성이 높아지면서 영국, 캐나다,

일본 등 외국에서 찾아오는 학생도 늘어나는 추세다.

Handley enjoyed a successful career in Hollywood as an

actor and stunt performer, but he returned to Australia to

train for selection for the national taekwondo team. While

continuing to pursue acting, including a three-month

stint playing a millionaire American love interest on the

TV show Neighbours, he began to realize that there was a

need for a professional stunt school. In 1990, he opened

the Australian Stunt Academy and has since passed on his

knowledge to more than 500 graduates.

The academy runs three professional courses and

one intermediate course each year, plus one advanced

course held in Hollywood. It also has one-day workshops

for people to try as a taster. Students come from all walks

of life, although the makeup of the classes has changed

considerably since it first opened. “When I started, it was

about 95 percent male and five percent female,” says

Handley. “Now we usually have one or two females in every

class.” As the school’s reputation has grown, there’s also

been an increase in the enrollment of foreign students.

밧줄에 의지해 펼치는 고강도 액션 등의 훈련이 포함된다.

60시간의 신체 훈련 수업과 함께, 학생들은 안전 및 팀워크를

다루는 스턴트 직업 이론과 자신을 홍보하고 일자리를 찾는

마케팅 수업도 듣는다.

전문 스턴트 대역이나 스턴트 감독이 되기 위해 이곳을 찾는

학생도 있지만, 시드니에서 온 에이드리언 울프 같은 현직 배우도

눈에 띈다. 신인 배우인 울프는 스턴트 연기를 소화할 기술을

체계적으로 배워 좀 더 많은 작품에 출연할 기회를 얻고자 호주

스턴트 아카데미에 등록했다. “최고의 훈련을 받을 수 있는

학교이기에 이곳을 선택했다”는 게 울프의 말이다.

전문 스턴트 연기자로 성공하기 위해서는 어떤 기량이

필요할까? “신체를 고도로 단련해야죠. 어떤 액션이든 소화할 수

있어야 하고, 집중력과 훈련을 통한 절도 있는 동작, 자기 몸에

대한 통제력과 함께 스포츠와 무술에 소질이 있어야 합니다.

인내심과 용기, 끈기와 작은 부분을 놓치지 않는 섬세함도

필요합니다.” 핸들리는 스턴트 연기자가 갖춰야 할 필요 요건을

이렇게 설명했다. “자신감도 필요하지만 지시에 따르는 겸손한

While some of the students attend the academy to

become professional stunt doubles or stunt coordinators,

others, like Adrian Wulf of Sydney, are actors. Wulf has

been acting for a year and a half but is keen to make

himself more employable by being able to do his own

stunts. “I came here to the Gold Coast because the

academy offered the best training,” he says.

So what skills are needed to become a professional

stuntperson? “A high level of fitness; they need to be

action-ready, mentally focused, disciplined, have excellent

coordination skills, an aptitude for sports and martial arts,

be patient, courageous and persistent and have excellent

attention to detail,” Handley says. “And be confident but

아카데미 과정을 마치면 학생들은 현수 하강(懸垂下降)

수료증 및 화기(火器) 안전 교육 수료증 등 자신의 능력을 부각할

수 있는 증명서를 취득한다. 또 포트폴리오 제작을 위해 각자가

활약한 추격전, 낙하, 총격전 등을 담은 다양한 영상물도 받는다.

핸들리는 호주 스턴트 아카데미를 거쳐 간 많은 졸업생이 관련

업계에 성공적으로 진출해 스턴트 배우나 스턴트 감독으로

활약하고 있다고 설명했다. 졸업생들이 참여한 대표적인

영화로는 <매드맥스: 분노의 도로> <미션 임파서블: 로그네이션>

<매트릭스> 등이 있다.

문서 관리자라는 안정적 직업을 버리고 이 길을 택한 시펄이

이루고 싶은 꿈은 스턴트 배우로 인정받는 것이다. “이 일을 하기

위해 태어난 것 같다”라고 화염 장면 촬영을 위해 몸에 방화제를

바르며 시펄이 말했다. “업계 사람들은 스턴트 배우는 연기가 안

된다고 말하죠. 저는 그런 편견과 싸우고 싶어요. 제 꿈은 역할이

있는 배역을 맡아 저만의 스턴트 액션을 선보여서 연기도 잘하는

스턴트우먼이 있다는 사실을 입증하는 거랍니다!”

willing to follow instructions. A lot of people have come in

overconfident and have been quickly leveled.”

Graduating students receive a certificate highlighting

their competencies, as well as an advanced rappelling

certificate and firearms-awareness certificate. They also

get a showreel of their work for their portfolio — a series of

mini scenarios involving chases, falls, gun work and more.

Many students have gone on to become successful full-

time stunt people or stunt coordinators, with film credits

for past students including Mad Max: Fury Road, Mission:

Impossible — Rogue Nation, The Matrix and others.

For Sippel, who quit her job as a document controller,

her stunt performer accreditation will be the culmination

of a dream. “I feel like I was born for this,” she says as she

has fire-retardant gel applied to her in preparation for her

fire burn. “They say in the industry stunt people can’t act,

so my ambition is to land an acting role and perform my

own stunts and prove that this stunt woman can act!”
