Dear Parishioners and Friends of Ascension,

As most know, the Liturgical Year is broken up by Seasons. The Seasons are Advent, Christmas, Lent, Season of the Easter Triduum, Easter. All other times are considered ‘ordinary.” In the days of yesteryear, in the days before the Second Vatican Council, there were three Sundays leading up to Ash Wednesday, used as a reminder that Lent was drawing near.

Septuagesima was the name for the ninth Sunday before Easter. The term was often applied to the three week period before Lent and the Season ended on Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday, when Lent began. This period was also known as the pre-Lenten season. The other two Sundays in that period of the liturgical year were called Sexagesima and Quinquagesima (which would have been today.) Septuagesima comes from the Latin word for "seventieth" with Sexagesima and Quinquagesima equaling "sixtieth" and "fiftieth" respectively. They were patterned after the Latin word for the season of Lent, Quadragesima, which means "fortieth", as Lent is forty days long. Simply put, the season was a countdown, reminding us that Lent (and Easter) were rapidly approaching. Now there is no such reminder. Having said that, the Lenten Season is nearly upon us.

The annual observance of Lent is the special season which prepares us to celebrate worthily the Paschal Mystery. Through its twofold theme of repentance and baptism, the season of Lent hopefully prepares both the catechumens and the faithful to celebrate the Paschal Mystery. Catechumens are led to the Sacraments of initiation by means of the rite of election, the scrutinies, and catechesis. Lent runs from Ash Wednesday until the evening Mass of the Lord’s Last Supper on Holy Thursday.

This Wednesday is Ash Wednesday. It is a day of universal fast and abstinence. Ashes will be imposed after the homily at each of the Masses. On Ash Wednesday, Masses will be celebrated at 7a.m., 8:30a.m. (with the school children,) 12:00 Noon, 6:00p.m., and Mass in Spanish will be celebrated at 7:30p.m. Ashes will only be imposed during the Masses.

I also remind you that the Stations of the Cross are prayed each Friday in Lent. They are prayer in English at 11:30, before the 12 Noon Mass, and at 6:30p.m., before the evening Mass.

Queridos Feligreses y Amigos de la Ascensión, Como la mayoría sabe, el año litúrgico se divide por temporadas. Las estaciones son Adviento, Navidad, Cua-resma, Temporada del Triduo Pascual, Pascua. Todos los demás tiempos se consideran "ordinarios". En los días de antaño, en los días previos al Concilio Vaticano II, había tres domingos previos al Miércoles de Ceniza, utilizados como recordatorio de que la Cuaresma se acercaba.

Septuagesima era el nombre del noveno domingo antes de Pascua. El término a menudo se aplicaba al período de tres semanas antes de la Cuaresma y la temporada terminaba el Martes de Carnaval, el día anterior al Miér-coles de Ceniza, cuando comenzó la Cuaresma. Este pe-ríodo también se conoció como la temporada previa a la Cuaresma. Los otros dos Domingos en ese período del año litúrgico se llamaron Sexagesima y Quinquagesima (que habría sido hoy). Los catecúmenos son conducidos a los sacramentos de iniciación por medio del rito de elección, los escrutinios y la catequesis. La Cuaresma se extiende desde el Miércoles de Ceniza has-ta la Misa vespertina de la Última Cena del Señor el Jue-ves Santo.

Este Miércoles es Miércoles de Ceniza. Es un día de ayuno y abstinencia universal. Las Cenizas se impon-drán después de la homilía en cada una de las misas. El Miércoles de Ceniza, las Misas se celebrarán a las 7 a.m., a las 8:30 a.m. (con los niños de la escuela) 12:00 del mediodía, 6:00 p.m., y la Misa en español se celebrará a las 7:30 p.m. Las Cenizas solo se impondrán durante las Misas.

También les recuerdo que las Estaciones de la Cruz se rezan todos los Viernes en la Cuaresma. Habrán oracio-nes en Inglés a las 11:30, antes de la Misa de las 12 del mediodía, y a las 6:30 p.m., antes de la Misa de la tarde.

LENTEN FAST AND ABSTINENCE

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and absti-nence. Fasting means one full meal a day may be tak-en. Two smaller meals can be eaten to maintain physical strength, but together they should not equal another full meal. No snacking between meals. Catholics ages 18-59 are obliged to fast. Abstinence forbids the eating of meat or poultry. All Cath-olics who have reached the age of 14 and above are obliged to maintain abstinence on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays in Lent.

AYUNO Y ABSTINENCIA

El Miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes Santo son días de ayuno y abstinencia. El ayuno significa que se puede tomar una comida completa al día. Se pueden comer dos comidas más pequeñas para mantener la fuerza física, pero juntas no deberían igualar a otra comida completa. No hay refrigerios entre comidas. TALK BY MONSIGNOR SHELLEY The Bloomingdale Neighborhood History group is present-ing a free history talk on February 25th, at Hostelling Inter-national, 891 Amsterdam Avenue at 103rd Street, at 6:30 PM. Msgr. Shelley will speak again about his recently pub-lished book, Upper West Side Catholics: Liberal Catholicism in a Conservative Archdiocese. This will be the same talk that Msgr. Shelley gave here. Msgr. Shelley sees Ascension as a microcosm of the history of the Catholic Church in the city, a flourishing multi-ethnic bilingual parish and a vital part of the Bloomingdale neighborhood. He considers As-cension Church to be a showcase of the success of urban ethnic Catholicism. All are invited to attend this talk.

It is that time of year again. The Ascension Culinary Insti-tute's annual fundraiser gala is Saturday, March 7th. As you know, ACI is a program designed for NYC kids from 10 to 21. Aside from learning how to cook and knowing their way around a kitchen, the program builds teamwork, camarade-rie, self-confidence and a taste for the unknown. All the money we raise at the March 7th gala will go to the contin-uation of the program. Lots of fun entertainment, raffles, libations--and of course excellent food, all prepared by the ACI class of 2019/2020.
