Washburn Weekly Update
Week of September 5th to 9th, 2016

Sra. Norma I. Colón Torres

Sra. Magaly Jiménez Peña
Trabajadora Social
Saludos padres, madres y estudiantes:
Gogo Pediatric Cancer Foundation.
Josefina Aldecoa

*First dictation: Wednesday, September 7th, 2016. Numbers in millions. We will have a
“practice dictation” on Tuesday so students may see the process of the dictations.
**Currently, I am participating in a program called AFAMaC (Spanish acronym: Alianza para el
Fortalecimiento del Aprendizaje de las Matemáticas y Ciencias) which is a program from the
UPR-Mayagüez in alliance with the Department of Education of Puerto Rico that works with
funds from the Title II program, Part B, “Math and Science Partnership”. This program offers
seminars during the semester for teachers from elementary to secondary levels (during
weekends) to enrich the knowledge of the teachers so we have different tools to help students in
the classroom.
I am part of the experimental group of teachers, and have been given some Pre-Tests for the
students in 11th grade (Pre-Calculus course). The students will take this short, 10 multiple choice
problems Pre-Test during the week (Wednesday, September 7th, 2016) and then will retake the
test (then Post-Test) again in May. This test will not affect their grades, as it is used solely for
research purposes to see the effects and results the seminars have on students. Even though
students from 11th grade are the only ones to take the pre and posttests, all groups will be
impacted through me.
This program is also responsible for the math Olympics and it is a personal goal to have at least
one representation from Washburn for these competitions (which begin in Puerto Rico and end
with an international competition) at least in the first round.

Comments:
Bonjour Parents:
The students are really motivated with learning a third language. It is my upmost
recommendation that you listen to them as they practice.
Also, it is highly recommended that they have a dictionary of French-English so they
can look up for words on their own time and seek self-improvement.
