From the Pastor’s Desk… This Sunday’s gospel presents us two types of words. Two sons have been summoned to work in their father’s vineyard. The first son gives a clear negative response to the invitation without any excuses, justification, remorse or any type of conflict. In many ways this son represents the public sinners, the tax collectors and the prostitutes of the time. With their actions they may say no to take their place at the vineyard but the gospel also indicates that there’s room for changing their minds, for reconciliation and for conversion giving them a place in the fields and eventually the banquet. The second son, all diplomacy, just “saying the right thing” kind of guy, all condescending says yes, but doesn’t show up, demonstrating the emptiness of his words. Empty promises cannot produce that which they may promise. They cannot deliver. Actions speak louder than words. This parable describes that in order to profess our belief in God with our lips and mean it these words must be followed with actions. If we are regular Sunday church goers, professing with our lips how much we love God and at the same time despising our neighbor is just what it is… lip service. If we observe a strong devotional life while having contempt for those that do not pray as much as we do, as long as we do, as unwavering as we do, then it is like a beautiful alabaster vase, is magnificent to behold but is simply empty. This is a meter of exercising, which is the challenge with any fundamental theology, our orthodoxy, to say the right thing, with our orthopraxis, to do the right thing. But to say that this is a black and white issue is simplistic. This is not the good and the bad, hot and the cold, east or west, because we have all been on either side of the spectrum. This is about being inclusive. This is about knowing and believing that even great public sinners have an invitation and a change for redemption, redemption that empty words, self-righteousness and lip service cannot deliver. We are to reveal God in the crucified and in the resurrected Jesus, a force for the vulnerable, for the limited and fallible. We are to be strength for each other. Let us allow God to be God as we lift up humanity to Him. Let us take some creative writing and change the end of this parable by saying that a man had two sons and said to both of them: “My children go out into the vineyard today.” They both reply, “Yes Father I will go.” And so they did their Father’s will.

Del Escritorio del Párroco… El evangelio de este domingo nos presenta dos tipos de palabras. Dos hijos han sido convocados para trabajar en la viña de su padre. El primer hijo da una clara respuesta negativa a la invitación sin ninguna excusa, justificación, remordimiento o cualquier tipo de conflicto. En muchos sentidos este hijo representa a los pecadores públicos, los recaudadores de impuestos y las prostitutas de la época. Con sus acciones pueden decir no para tomar su lugar en

la viña, pero el evangelio también indica que hay espacio para cambiar sus mentes, para la reconciliación y para la conversión dándoles un lugar en los campos y, finalmente, el banquete. El segundo hijo, todo diplomacia, sólo "diciendo lo correcto" tipo de hombre, todo condescendiente dice que sí, pero no se presenta, lo que demuestra el vacío de sus palabras. Las promesas vacías no pueden producir lo que pueden prometer. No pueden llevar nada a cabo. Las acciones hablan más que las palabras. Esta parábola pide profesar nuestra creencia en Dios con nuestros labios y que estas palabras sean seguidas con acciones. Si somos asistentes regulares a la iglesia dominical, profesamos con nuestros labios cuánto amamos a Dios y al mismo tiempo rechazamos a nuestro prójimo, es lo que es. Si observamos una vida devocional fuerte mientras despreciamos a aquellos que no oran tanto como nosotros, tan inquebrantable como nosotros, entonces somos como un hermoso vaso de alabastro, es magnífico a los ojos, pero está simplemente vacío. Es cuestión de ejercitar, lo cual es el desafío con cualquier teología fundamental, nuestra ortodoxia, de decir lo correcto, con nuestra orto práctica, hacer lo correcto. Pero decir que este es un problema de blanco y negro es simplista. Esto no es lo bueno y lo malo, lo caliente y lo frío, el este o el oeste, porque todos hemos estado a ambos lados del espectro. Se trata de ser inclusivo. Se trata de saber y creer que incluso los grandes pecadores públicos tienen una invitación y una oportunidad para la redención, la redención que las palabras vacías, la rectitud de sí mismo y los labios no pueden cumplir. Debemos revelar a Dios en el Jesús crucificado y resucitado, una fuerza para los vulnerables, para lo limitado y falible. Debemos ser fuerza el uno para el otro. Dejemos que Dios sea Dios al elevar nuestra humanidad. Hagamos un poco de escritura creativa y cambiemos el final de esta parábola diciendo que un hombre tenía dos hijos y les dijo a ambos: "Mis hijos salgan hoy a la viña". Ambos responden: "Sí, Padre, iré." Y así hicieron la voluntad de su Padre.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS NOTICIAS DEL CATECISMO The Lord's Peace be with you!

The Lord’s ways are not our own ways. In this Sunday’s readings, we are reminded of just how we are to conduct ourselves in this life. We are first told that we preserve our lives when we turn away from what is wicked. Saint Paul then presents to us in Jesus the model we are to follow. In the Incarnate Word we find the perfect nature of our loving, merciful, kind, and compassionate God. Finally, in our Gospel passage the Lord reveals just who are the ones entering God’s Kingdom. They are those who-well aware of their sinful condition- recognize their utter dependence on the God who loved them into existence and has sustained them with His Grace. These readings help remind me that the road to eternal salvation is through humble obedience and poverty of spirit. I must remember this whenever I feel tempted to judge a person or groups of people I feel are not worthy to enter Eternal Paradise.

¡La Paz del Señor esté con ustedes!

Los caminos del Señor no son nuestros caminos. En las lecturas de este domingo, se nos recuerda cómo debemos comportarnos en esta vida. Primero oímos que preservemos nuestras vidas cuando nos alejamos de lo malvado. San Pablo entonces nos presenta en Jesús el modelo a seguir. En el Verbo Encarnado vemos la naturaleza perfecta de nuestro Dios amoroso, misericordioso, bueno y compasivo. Finalmente, en el pasaje del Evangelio el Señor nos revela quienes son los que están entrando en el Reino de Dios. Son aquellos quienes-conscientes de su condición pecadora-reconocen su dependencia absoluta en el Dios que los amó a la existencia y los ha sostenido con Su Gracia. Estas lecturas ayudan a recordarme que el camino a la salvación eterna es a través de la obediencia humilde y la pobreza de espíritu. Debo recordarlo cada vez que me siento tentado a juzgar a una persona o grupo de personas que siento no son dignas de entrar en el Paraíso Eterno.

The Legion of Mary would like to extend a welcome to anyone interested in attending the local Public Square Rosary Rally hosted by us on October 14, 2017 at 11:30am in the parking lot of the Thiele Center. We will begin praying the Rosary in Spanish at 12:00 noon.

In its 100th Year, the Rosary Rally is dedicated to our nation’s great need for public prayer, repentance, and conversion. This Year we ask God to save America through the Rosary of His Most Holy Mother.
