Abstract
The technology now used to construct insulation in high-vol-
tage instrument transformers is described. New materials
a re discussed as alternatives in design and likely trends for
the future. Finally, various methods are described to assure
manufacturing quality and the condition of transformers in
s e rv i c e .
1. INTRODUCTION
Although the main purpose of a instrument transformer (IT)
is to transform accurately voltage or current to standard i z e d
levels in both transient and established regimes, if it is con-
nected to a high voltage line its electrical insulation function
is also highly import a n t .
Medium voltage (3.6 - 72.5 kV) must be distinguished fro m
high voltage (72.5 - 765 kV) in terms of use and the insu-
lation employed. The high voltage units are the main subject
of this art i c l e .
t r a n s f o rm a d o res en serv i c i o .
1. INTRODUCCIN
re gran import a n c i a .

d a m e n t e .
f o rma inesperada y a veces violenta. Por ello re c i e n t e m e n-
T h e re are three types of IT:
1) Current Tr a n s f o rmers (CT) for transforming the current on
the line to which they are connected in series (fig. 1). 2) Vo l-
tage Tr a n s f o rmers, which may be magnetic (MVT) or capa-
citive (CVT) used to transform the voltage between the line
and earth (fig. 2 & 3); and
3) Combined Tr a n s f o rmers (KT) made up of one CT and one
MVT (fig. 4). Insulation differs considerably between these
types, so they are analyzed separately here .
The IT is a static unit which in principle needs no mainte-
nance throughout its lifetime, which may be as long as 25
years. However it is hard to know the condition of a IT, so
that if it fails it does so unexpectedly and sometimes vio-
l e n t l y. There has there f o re been intense word re c e n t l y
aimed at finding ways of learning the status of the main
insulation on these units.
2. TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
The appearance of epoxy type synthetic resins enabled the
same material to be used for the inside and outside
insulation of medium voltage, indoor ITs (fig. 5). Later,
cycloaliphatic resins and materials such as butyl which

behave better against surface electric arcs and UV rays
enabled the same technique to be used in designs for ITs
for outside use (fig. 6). However in these cases the leaka-
ge path must be greater than that used in porcelain insula-
tors because they are organic and there f o re less re s i s t a n t
to the mentioned electric arc s .
The manufacturing advantages of solid insulation can be
combined with high outside strength in designs such as the
one in fig. 7, where epoxy resin is combined with porc e l a i n
in a medium voltage IT. In this case the leak-tightness fo the
chamber between the two parts must be ensured to pre v e n t
m o i s t u re getting in and causing an electric arc between the
high and low voltage across the chamber.
Various trials have been carried out with these materials in
high voltage, but they have been found to be unsuitable for
voltages of more than 72 kV. Oil paper is there f o re still used
in internal insulation, in spite of the process being more
laborious, and porcelain for the outside.
2.1 Outside Insulation
As indicated above, porcelain is normally used for insulation
at high voltages.
The sheds are either all the same or alternate (see fig. 8)
with leakage paths of 2 cm/kV for average contamination
and 3.1 for heavy contamination. IEC standard 815 goes
into this matter in depth.
-
2.1. Aislamiento externo
(fig. 9).
4
In new designs the diameter of the porcelain parts has
been reduced, with which the flashover voltage is incre a-
sed, especially in the case of heavy pollution. By re d u c i n g
the volume of oil the effects of any explosion and subse-
quent fire are also reduced. Cemented flanges allow for
much higher work coefficients in porcelain than clamps and
enable excellent mechanical characteristics to be obtained
in spite of the small diameter.
If the porcelain parts are very tall, they may need to be
made in two separate parts and then joined by ceramic
adhesion (re-baking) or with epoxy glue (fig. 9).
When ITs are installed at altitudes of more than 1000 m
above sea level, it must be taken into account that the
lower air density makes it less electrically rigid, and taller
p o rcelain units are needed to withstand the same volta-
ges. Since the internal insulation is not affected by this
p roblem it does not need to be oversized. If the outside
insulation is to be checked in a laboratory at normal altitude
a re i n f o rced prototype must be built so that higher voltages
can be applied. This is expensive: an alternative is to test the
flashover tension of the insulator, since this is not aff e c t e d
a p p reciably when the internal parts are fitted.

2.2 Aislamiento interno
A. Elemento aislante principal
do, y tipo aguja (fig. 11).
2.2 Internal Insulation
A. Main Insulating Element
This comprises the oil paper insulating assembly between
the high and low voltage electrodes or scre e n s .
In CTs this insulation can be on the primary, on the
s e c o n d a r y or par tly on each. If it is on the primary it may
be hairpin type (fig. 10) with the primary having the appe-
arance of an insulated cable, or needle type (fig. 11).
These are usually known as dead tank models, with
those having the insulation on the secondary (fig. 1)
being known as live tank models. Models with insula-
tion shared between primary and secondary are seldom
used (fig. 12).
Cascade type CTs (fig. 13) are a special case. Two CTs of
one of the types indicated above are connected in series,
with each bearing half the voltage. This voltage sharing is a
function of the capacities of the transformers (500-1 0 0 0
pF) and may vary due to strays or leakage current if there is
heavy pollution.
Kraft and/or capacitor type paper is used. It is overlapped
so that no easy paths are provided for electric arcs. There
should be no gaps, because after impregnation they will
contain only oil, with a dielectric constant which is half that
of oil paper. This will lead to a big increase in gradient in an
a rea which is already electrically weak.
M V Ts can be made up of a single coil (fig. 2) or several coils
on a single core (fig. 14) or on several cores (fig. 15).

Ta m b i n
6
In this case voltage sharing is guaranteed inductively by
a u x i l i a ry windings in each core and between cores. Fig. 16
shows the construction of a MVT coil with sheets of 0.04
mm capacitor paper placed between the turns of fine copper
w i re so that capacitative and inductive voltages are main-
tained at diff e rent frequencies. Since the distance between
layers of wire is small, the working gradients of the insula-
tion are far higher than those used in CTs, and can be as
much as half the levels used in CVTs .

No obstante,
m a t e r i a l e s .
B. Zona transicin
In CVTs insulation comprises flat capacitor units connec-
ted in series, fitted inside the porcelain. Each unit is made
by winding two sheets of aluminium and various sheets of
paper on a cylindrical mandrel and then impregnating
them with mineral oil (fig. 17). Polypropylene is also used
with a sheet of paper to improve the impregnation of the
whole assembly. With polypropylene the value of tg ofthe capacitor is reduced considerably. However, bearing in
mind that MTs age due to partial discharges and not ther-
mal effects, the significance of the value of tg is relati-ve and is only comparable when the same materials are
used.
B. Transitional Area
This is the gap between the high and low voltage elec-
t rodes along the surface of the main insulator in contact
with the oil. If this area is properly designed the flasho-
ver voltage can be raised both inside the MT and in the
a i r.
N o rmally screen electrodes (fig. 18) or capacitor scre e n s
(fig. 19) are used. With the former of these systems less
s c reens are used, but they must have rounded ends to
reduce the axial gradient. When capacitor screens are
used, similar to those used in bushings, it is advisable
to use a high number of screens to reduce the edge
e ff e ct .

8N o rmalmente se utilizan electrodos deflectores (fig. 18) o
pantallas condensadoras (fig. 19).
a i s l a n t e .
t r a n s f o rm a d o r.
2.3 Oil Compensator
This is an auxiliary element of the IT, but its influence on the
behaviour in service of the insulation system is capital.
I Ts, like other electrical apparatuses, formerly used oil in
contact with the atmosphere, meaning that they were satu-
rated with gas and water. In some cases a silica gel dry i n g
filter was used, but since these filters were located in high
voltage areas they were not changed and after a while beca-
me ineffective. This design is valid up to a certain voltage
level, provided that the insulation is properly sized, but in
the case of very high voltages, e.g. 420 kV, the high level of
the tg of this insulation causes considerable heating. CTswith very thick insulation are hard to cool, so the transfor-
mer can age pre m a t u re l y.
At present, all ITs are built with an oil volume compensator
so that the oil is not in direct contact with the air. This main-
tains the high dielectric characteristics of the oil paper
a s s e m b l y, obtained by careful manufacturing with vacuum
d rying at more than 0.02 To rr. for 5-15 days. In final elec-
trical testing these ITs have not partial discharges, and their
tg is lower than 0.5%.
There are many versions of compensator designs, but
most are covered by the four shown in fig. 20.
A. Nitrogen Cushion
The oil is saturated with gas. The amount it contains is a func-
tion of pre s s u re and temperature. At low temperatures the
reduction in pre s s u re causes bubbles to form in the oil. These
rise to the top chamber, leading to partial discharges.

9Fig. 21.
una subpre s i n .
no est saturado.
Experiments have shown that in gas saturated oil with pre s-
s u res of less than 0.8 bar absolute, the voltage at which par-
tial discharges appear drops drastically (fig. 21). To pre v e n t
this, transformers are usually built with a slight overpre s s u-
re at ambient temperature (20oC). However the l e a k - t i g h t-
ness of the seals must be ensured to prevent that over-
p re s s u re from causing gas leaks under maximun heating
c o n d i t i o n s .
Another hazard of this design is the possibility that water
lying on the surface of the transformer in contact with the
seal area may get inside if the seals do not work pro p e r l y,
because at low temperatures there will be underpre s s u re .
B. Gas Balloon
This is an improved variant of the above. The gas is not in
contact with the oil and the oil is there f o re not saturated.
Oil pressure also varies with temperature here, with the
consequent risks should the seals fail.
C. Rubber Membrane
In this case the oil pre s s u re is constant due to the gre a t
elasticity of the membrane. If the correct material is used
the permeability of the compensator can be reduced and oil
kept in good condition for years.
D. Metal Bellows
This solution is similar to the previous one, but metal (e.g.
stainless steel) is used as the elastic element.
If the compensator is built of welded plates the whole
assembly is highly elastic and no pre s s u re is produced in
the oil when the volume varies. The welding is highly deli-
cate and re q u i res great care, because the steel involved is
v e ry thin.

c u i d a d o s a m e n t e .
trabaja a presin constante.
aislante principal desde hace muchos aos, re c i e n t e m e n t e
tricos produce compuestos corrosivos.
h i g ro s c p i c o .
In the case of bellows made by shaping (no welds in the
main body) pressure must be applied to make then chan-
ge volume, which means that the oil does not work at
constant pressure. On the other hand, compensators of
this type can deteriorate if sudden changes of volume
occur at low temperatures.
3. NEW INSULATING MATERIALS
CT using SF6 gas as their main insulator have existed for
many years, but new versions have recently come onto the
m a r k e t .
Fig. 22 shows a construction of this type, where oil paper
insulation and supplementary oil have been replaced by
SF6, resulting in a simple assembly. The design varies

A continuacin comentaremos algunos ensayos finales
m a s .
Fig. 23. T. T. para una instalacin blindadaM.V.T. for a GIS substation
slightly in other cases, e.g. an insulating support may be
placed between the primary and secondary to impro v e
mechanical characteristics, or an intermediate screen may
be used to optimize the distribution of the field along the
i n s u l a t o r.
This material is well known due to its use in GIS (gas insu-
lated substation) substations. It usually runs at 3.5 - 4.5
bar absolute, since its dielectric characteristics impro v e
considerably with increased pre s s u re, but care must be
taken to prevent condensation from forming at low temp e-
r a t u res. This is important in ITs because they are inst a l l e d
outdoors, where they may have to contend with temperatu-
res of - 25oC or even lower.
One problem with this insulation is that in ITs, it is highly
complicated to use methods similar to those used in GIS
substations, where gas pre s s u re is checked carefully and
the system is disconnected when the pre s s u re is too low.
The MVT in GIS substations are generally also insulated
with SF6, as shown in fig. 23. The insulation between layers
may be paper, but if so proper drying must be ensured, as
any moisture in an atmosphere of SF6 and electric arcs can
p roduce corrosive compounds. For this reason polypro p y l e-
ne is normally used as an insulator, as it does not absorb
w a t e r.
As external isolation, tubes of glass fiber with silicone
sheds have begun to be used. This design is less fragile
than the porcelain, but there is not much experience of it,
and it is necessary to guarantee the quality of the join bet-
ween sheds and tube.
Another separate case is that of electronic ITs in which the
connection between the high and low voltage sides may
simply be an optical fibre .
4. QUALITY CONTROL & TESTING
T h e re are regulations governing measuring transform e r s
(IEC 44, 185, 186, IEEE C57-13, etc.) which stipulate
various routine and type tests for establishing the quality of
a p p a r a t u s e s .
However these tests must be supplemented by others to
provide the best possible guarantees as to overall manu-
facturing quality. ISO standard 9000 on Quality System
lays down the processes or aspects of manufacturing to
be tested in accordance with the level selected. These
include design, documents, suppliers, in-process inspec-
tion and records.
Below is a discussion of some final tests whose charac-
teristics are being studied, and some conditions required
of ITs but not included in standards.

industrial.
No obstante si
U = C t -c
elevada corriente produce esfuerzos trmicos y dinmicos
A. Routine Dielectric Testing
Since a rigidity test at industrial frequency puts a strain on
the transform e r, there is a tendency to reduce the level but
measuring partial discharges immediately afterw a rds, wit-
hout reducing voltage to zero .
B. Lifetime Testing
As indicated above thermal aging does not usually take
place in ITs. However, if it is considered convenient a ther-
mal stability test can be perf o rmed. Measuring tg after aheating test is not sufficient to check this phenomenon.
Electrical aging is caused by partial discharges, so accele-
rated testing must be based on voltage/time curves with
the same probability of partial discharges. These curv e s
have the following form :
U = C t -c
where C and c are constants.
C. High-frequency Transients
When disconnectors or circuit breakers are used, high-fre-
quency oscillations (0.1 -10 MHz) are produced with volta-
ges up to 3 times the rated level. Waves of this type cause
s h o rt-duration currents in TM screens of up to 1000 A,
sometimes causing the transformer to fail.
To analyze the behaviour of ITs in respect of this pheno-
menom, IEC has a method in which at least 100 pulses
chopped at the crest are applied, and the comparision
with the values of gas content before and after test is
analyzed. A IT is estimated to have passed the test when
the increase in gases is:
H2 < 5 ppm
CH4 < 2 ppm
C2H4 < 1 ppm
C2H2 < 1 ppm
C2H6 < 2 ppm
D. Line Discharge
When a line is opened under no load, maximum voltage is
obtained. If this is not discharged there may be an overv o l-
tage on re c o n n e c t i o n .
M V Ts are suitable for discharging lines, since their impe-
dance drops rapidly when the core is saturated with the
transient current. However, this high current causes
t h e rmal and dynamic stresses in the winding, and can
even destroy the transformer if it is not pre p a red to sup-
p o rt them.

a b i e rto sobre una re s i s t e n c i a .
F. Transporte y ensayos ssmicos
valores incluso superiores a 10 g.
The same thing can happen to MVTs used to discharge
banks of capacitors.
E. Ferro-resonance
This phenomenom is not frequent, but it is highly dange-
rous, as the MVT is generally destroyed by overh e a t i n g .
Depending on the characteristics of the circuit, ferro - re s o-
nance may be in series or parallel, though the latter only
occurs in lines with an insulated neutral and is there f o re not
found in high voltage situations.
A p a rt from the well known case of CVT, ferro - resonance in
series can also be found in MVTs connected to a voltage
line through distributing capacitors of a circuit breaker or
t h rough the capacity between lines when one is live and the
other is not.
T h e re are ways of avoiding this phenomenom, such as the
use of an auxiliary secondary in an open delta connection
on a re s i s t o r.
F. Transportation & Seismic Testing
The number of breakages in loading, transit and unloading
is important. Malfunctions may also be caused which are
not detected and which cause the transformer to fail when
it is put into serv i c e .
It has been shown that truck and rail transportation is har-
der on equipment than sea transportation, with levels of 10
g or even more being re a c h e d .
It is there f o re necessary to set maximum acceleration
levels in accordance with which packaging can be designed
and which should not be exceeded during transport a t i o n .
T h e re are indicators available which can be built into pac-
kaging to check this.
ITs can also be mechanically destroyed by earthquakes,
since they are slim, fragile units. It must be taken into
account whether the installation site is likely to suffer
earth tremors.
Various companies have drawn up specifications which inclu-
de design criteria and checking tests, and experience has
shown that ITs manufactured to their re q u i rements can
withstand heavy eart h q u a k e s .
In some cases, especially with very high voltages, shock
absorbers may need to be used.

formador.
5.2 Control en Campo
A. Inspeccin visual
i n d i c a d o res de nivel, etc., as como posibles fugas de acei-
te.
disueltos, tg y humedad.
5. INSPECTION & CHECKING IN THE FIELD
5.1 On Commissioning
First, check the condition of the packaging and the trans-
f o rmers carefully on arrival at their destination. They may
have suff e red damaging knocks or vibrations even if the
packaging appears to be in good condition.
In apparatuses with oil level indicators, check thar these
coincide with those on other transformers from the same
batch. Also carry out a detailed inspection of the seal are a ,
checking for oil, especially after long periods of storage. If
a CT placed horizontally develops leaks the main insulation
loses its oil and the unit must not be put into serv i c e .
As electrical checking, it is advisable to measure the insu-
lation between secondaries and between each secondary
and eart h .
Finally, any unusual noise on powering up may be a sign
of transformer malfunction.
5.2 Checking in the Field
A. Visual inspection
It is advisable to run regular visual inspections on trans-
formers, e.g. every three months to check oil indicators,
etc. and check for oil leaks. As above, check also for any
unusual noises.
B. Oil analysis
After 5 - 10 years of service, samples should be
taken of the transformer oil to check its condition.
This can be checked via dissolved gas, tg and mois-t u re tests.

i m p o rt a n t e s .
te. Va l o res superiores a 20 ppm pueden considerarse
p e l i g rosos y a partir de 40 ppm (a 30oC) el aceite est
s a t u r a d o .
By analyzing the gases dissolved in the oil the condition of
the transformer can be learned, along with the causes of
any deterioration. Normally H2, CH4, C2H4 and C2H2 a re
m e a s u red, though in ITs the most important are H2 ( w h i c h
indicates the presence of low energy partial discharg e s )
and C2H2 (which indicates larger electrical discharg e s ) .
This method is widely used in power transformers, but it has
been shown that the same criteria cannot be used for ITs ,
as the results depend largely on the type of constru c t i o n .
R e s e a rch is being carried out into this matter, and it is
hoped that the phenomenom will be better known within a
few years.
As a guideline, the limit levels for dissolved gases in ITs
are as follows:
Experiments are being carried out to facilitate this test by
placing detectors inside ITs, and the possibility of conti-
nuous monitoring is also being studied. The reason b e h i n d
this is that ITs which have been in service for many years
can age very quickly if partial discharges appear.
The tg level of oil at 90oC indicates the degree of conta-mination, but is hard to relate this to the condition of the
main insulation. With levels of more than approx. 6% the oil
can be assumed to be in poor condition.
It is also important to measure the amount of water in the
oil, as water passes from the oil to the paper, thus dete-
riorating the main insulation. By analyzing the oil in this
way we can, even without testing the whole transformer at
tg , estimate whether it has become wet. Levels of morethan 20 ppm can be considered as hazardous, and the oil
can be considered as saturated at 40 ppm or more (at
30oC).
Furfuraldehide in oil is measured to detect aging due to
phenomena other than arcs. Though this is one of the
parameters used in power transformers, it is not signifi-
cant in ITs.

C. Ensayos elctricos
dado. Para este ensayo en TI, en
conveniente que exista una
toma aislada.
D. Otros mtodos
Mediante equipos de term o v i-
sin pueden detectarse defectos
en conexiones primarias de TI,
calentamiento excesivo en TTC,
etc. Es un mtodo sencillo y muy
sensible y las experiencias re c o-
miendan su utilizacin.
Para detectar fallos de galletas
en TTC se puede utilizar la ten-
sin en tringulo abierto, ya
que el fallo del condensador se
produce normalmente de forma
gradual.
C. Electrical Testing
P a rtial discharge and tg tests on transformers area a sui-table additional means of learning the condition of the insu-
lation, but in general they can only be perf o rmed in a labo-
r a t o ry.
T h e re are portable units for measuring tg at 10 kV, but thetest is complicated becaused the ITs has to be disconnec-
ted from the line and the insulator cleaned. The measure-
ments can vary greatly if this is
not done care f u l l y. On CTs it is
advisable for an insulated con-
nection point to be used for this
t e s t .
D. Other methods
T h e rmovision equipment can be
used to detect defects in the pri-
m a ry connections of CTs, exces-
sive heating in CVTs, etc. This is
a simple, highly sensitive met-
hod which is recommended by
e x p e r i e n c e .
To detect failures in condenser
units of CVTs, open delta volta-
ge can be used, as capacitor
f a i l u res normally occur gra-
dually.
Ultrasonic methods have also
been tried to detect internal dis-
c h a rges, but for the moment the sensitivity levels attained
a re not suff i c i e n t .
6. CONCLUSIONS
The classical oil paper insulation system is still norm a l l y
used in ITs. Improvements in material quality and design
have enabled dielectric characteristics to be considerably
i m p roved.
New materials are being used, especially SF6 gas in ITs
for GIS substations and by extension in normal uses.
The tests laid down in standards are considered insuffi-
cient, and need to be supplemented to ensure correct
transformer operation in service.
Various ways exist of learning the condition of the insulation
of a IT which has been in service for many years, though
for the moment none is considered to be sufficiently re l i a-
ble and simple.
