BackgroundQuestionMethods The status of endangered species relies on a basic framework of information that can be used to evaluate their conservation status and propose management plans Echinomastus unguispinus is a globose cactus distributed in the northern states of the Chihuahuan Desert Mexico Even though it is considered endangered by the Mexican red species list there is currently no basic ecological information that can be used to assess its true status In this study we describe the distribution association pattern (nurse-protegeacute relationship) and plant community to determine a preliminary conservation status of Echinomastus unguispinus Fieldwork was conducted in the Mapimi Biosphere reserve (MBR) in the Southern Chihuahuan Desert Mexico We set up twelve 20 by 30 transects at five locations were populations of E unguispinus were located The transects were used as grids in which individual plants were measured and located in x y coordinates We determined distribution patterns of individuals and created vegetation to determine the tendency of association with nurse plants We correlated Shannons diversity index of the plant community with population density of Echinomastus unguispinus ResultsConclusions We found that the species tends to have a random distribution (IH= 04696) however 63 of the individuals were associated with a nurse plant and a positive relationship existed between Shannons diversity index and the population density of Echinomastus unguispinus Even though individuals appear to be associated to nurse plants the random distribution pattern suggests that it may not be restricted to the identity of the nurse plant The fact that a positive correlation exists between the diversity of the plant community and the density of E unguispinus tells us that the conservation of this rare species will largely depend on the conservation of its habitat

BackgroundQuestlonMethods Population ecology is an important tool for creating managing programs for preventing invasive species Cactoblastis cactorum (cactus moth) is native to South America olygophagous on Opuntia The cactus moth was used lor the control of Opuntia in Australia and other countries including some Irom the Caribbean Since the introduction 01 Cactoblastis cactorum in the Caribbean it has moved northward 10 Florida and Isla MUJeres and Isla Contoy in SE Mexico The presence 01 the cactus moth in Mexico is of great concern beca use most Opuncia species have a biological social or economic importance We modelled the potential distribution in Mexico of the Opunta species attacked by the cactus moth and 01 their morphologically related species using herbarium data and bioclimatic models based on national scale digital cartography We also modelled the demographic eHects 01 an invasion by C cacCorum on a wild Opuntia population using Lelkovitch matrix population models Demographic data was obtained Irom one wild Opuncia species and the damage by the cactus moth was projected with matrix population models Perturbations were done on the matrix elements simulating the reduction 01 demographic processes according to the damage reported by the cactus moth on Opuntia in South Africa

ResultsConcluslons The potential distribution of cactus moth partially coincides with the potential distribution of the Opuntia species The Opuntia species are mainly distributed in the north and center of Mexico by richness these areas are the most susceptible of damage by the cactus moth attack Demographically unperturbed OpunCia population showed numerical equilibrium or moderate population increase while a 10 reduction in plant growth considerably decreased the rate of population increase Qur results suggest that the 58 wild OpunCia species could be seriously aHected throughout Mexco by the cactus moth with important economic social and biological consequences
