Como en la notable El molino y la cruz (Lech Majewski, 2011) esta pelcula basa su puesta en escena en obras pictricas. En este caso el artista homenajeado es el pintor y grabador estadounidense Edward Hopper, quien supo captar en su obra la vida moderna americana, tanto en escenas urbanas como rurales. Aqu el foco est puesto en Shirley, una mujer que pasa su vida en los Estados Unidos desde los aos treinta hasta los sesenta, y es desarrollado su devenir vital desde su viaje a Europa en los aos an-teriores a la Gran Depresin hasta la consecucin de los derechos civiles a mediados de los aos 60. Cada vieta es precedida de una locucin de un noticiero radial que sita la accin en determinado momento histrico; a continuacin se desarrollan las escenas que, nutridas de una gama de tonalidades y colores, recrean y dan vida a las obras de Hopper, esbozndose una sutil narrativa que utiliza el marco pictrico a modo de puesta en escena teatral. Pintura, teatro y cine se funden en un experimento extraordinario, elocuente sobre el devenir del teatro y la literatura, la filosofa y el compromiso socio-poltico.

Like in the outstanding The Mill and the Cross (Lech Majewski, 2011), this film bases its setting on paint-ings. In this case, the artist whos being paid homage to is the American painter and engraver Edward Hopper, who managed to capture the American modern life in his work, both in rural and urban settings. Shirley is the main focus, a woman who spends her life in the States, since she was thirty years old until she turns sixty; her life events are developed since her trip to Europe in the years before the Great Depres-sion until the achievement of the civil rights in the mid 60s. Every segment is preceded by a speech by a radio news anchor that sets the action in a historical moment; this is followed by scenes rich in tones and colors, recreating and giving life to Hoppers paintings, outlining a subtle narration which uses the picto-rial frame as a theatrical mise-en-scne. Painting, theater and film come together in an extraordinary experiment, very telling of the future of theater, literature, philosophy and socio-political commitment.

GUSTAV DEUTSCH(Viena, Austria, 1952)

Pintor, msico, fotgrafo, arquitecto, compaginador de found footage, director. Estudi arquitectura en la Universidad Tecnolgica de Viena. Fue colaborador de la artista Hanna Schimek durante aos y es miembro del grupo internacional de artistas Der Blaue Kompressor. En 2003 se convirti en director artstico de la Academia Aegina, en Atenas.

Painter, musician, photographer, architect, editor of found footage, director. He studied architecture at the Technological University of Vienna. He collaborated with the artist Hanna Schimek for several years and is a member of the international group of artists Der Blaue Kompressor. In 2003, he became artistic director of the Aegina Academy in Athens.
