RITE OF ACCEPTANCE /WELCOME The Combined Rite of Accepting Cate-

chumens and Welcoming Candi-dates for Full Communion and Full Initiation will be celebrated as part of the 9:00 AM Mass on Sunday, December 4.

This first step in the Rite of Chris-tian Initiation is a significant state-ment of faith by those who have been inquiring about the Catholic Church. As a result, the rubrics of the liturgy are slightly changed. Members of the parish are invited to attend and participate in supporting the inquirers. We do not expect any significant change in the duration of the service.

“You . . . must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.” — Matthew 24:44

REFUGEE FORUM ANOTHER SUCCESS FOR SOCIAL AWARENESS MINISTRY

On Sunday, November 6, approximately 60 people heard six speakers, all of whom had personal experienc-es as, or with, refugees. Their varied points of view helped us to begin to understand the enormous difficul-ties encountered by those who find themselves in such desperate situations that they must flee their homes and families seeking safety and shelter. Deacon Valencia, representing Bishop Kicanis, drew upon his experiences

in law enforcement with desperate border crossers who often were forced to carry illegal drugs into the U.S. Mudhafar Al-Husseini told of his early life living through three wars in his native Iraq. Jeffrey Cornish, Director of the Internation-al Rescue Committee, explained the complexities of attaining the right to, and subsequently, living in this country. Cherie Gray, as director of Tucson Refugee Ministry, explained the role faith communities can play in reaching out to help refugees settle successfully in a strange environment. She expressed profound gratitude for the participation of Tucson area groups and, particularly in this case, Santa Catalina. Gilbert Muganga, with the help of a translator, spoke in Swahili to relate his struggles fleeing his native Congo and grief at being forced to tempo-rarily abandon his family. The last speaker, Ronald Tocchini, a lawyer who has helped hundreds of refugees obtain documents enabling them to remain in the country, gave us a history of the sanctuary movement. A question and answer period followed which indicated a sincere desire to learn more and to participate in further efforts. The Social Awareness Ministry thanks those who attended and invites everyone to future forums and events.

“SNACK PACK” PROGRAM December 3 and 4

Santa Catalina Catholic Church, along with Vista de la Montana Methodist

Church, participates in the “Snack Pack” program of the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona. The purpose of the program is to provide supplemental food to children who are considered to be nutritionally at risk. Each week during the school year (plus an extra “Snack Pack” at Christmas), volunteers sort and pack the food in “Snack Packs,” which are delivered to Coronado K-8 School. At the end of the school day, 60 children receive these Packs.

This food truly makes a difference in the lives of these children and their families. One child writes, “Thank you so much for giving us delicious, nutritious snacks. I love the Cheeri-os, club crackers and many more of your delicious snacks. I can’t wait ‘till Friday!” A parent writes, “Thank you all for all the effort and time you put in helping others!”

On Saturday and Sunday, December 3 and 4, there will be a second offer-ing taken for this program. The cost of each pack is $4.40, a yearly total of $5,500. If you would like to donate, please make your check out to Santa Catalina Parish and on the “For” line, write “Snack Pack program." All of our volunteers and most of all, the children, thank you for your continu-ing generosity. If you have questions or would like to volunteer, please call Elizabeth at 825-7838 or Mike at 825-0500.

Let’s give the children the food they need!

On Tuesday morning, I went to a funeral service of a dear friend. Whenever I go to a funeral, I am reminded about how short life really is. We truly never know the last time we will see someone. Thanksgiving gives us an opportunity to reflect and give thanks for the people that God has put in our lives. I know for a fact that our youth ministry team is very grateful that you

are a part of our lives. We enjoy sharing our faith with you, during the times that you are with us.

We hope that you are enjoying your religious education here at Santa Catalina, and that you continue to bring joy to our lives by being here. May you and your family be blessed this Thanksgiving and throughout the rest of the year.

JESUS IS THE REASON In today’s world Christmas starts at Thanksgiving and ends on December 25, but the Church emphasizes this time as Advent, the season of expectation, when we prepare our hearts and lives for the Lord’s coming at Christmas. You may already have such customs in your household as an Advent wreath, a Jesse tree, a manger scene, or

special devotions. A German tradition called Kristkindl (“Christ child”) involves a family passing a bowl around with each person taking a rolled-up slip of paper with a family member’s name on it. For the rest of Advent that person is your Kristkindl, and you do a good deed for them every day, but in secret! Even young children can participate. You prepare to serve Christ by serving your Kristkindl: pray for them, save money to send to a good cause in their name, donate gifts to a shelter, do extra chores, adopt a needy family.
