SPIRITUALITY FOR LIVING: Uncovering Holiness Hidden in Daily Life Wednesday, May 1 9:30am-12pm Nestled in our experience of everyday life are rich elements that support our spiritual growth. Holiness is hidden in these folds if we but stop and take note. God uses all as-pects of our lives to draw us close. Come and discover what God is using in your own life to reveal more to you about the Sacred. Who are the persons that God is sending, the places God is using, and the stories that invite us to live more fully? Join us for a morning on Spirituality for Liv-ing… more fully awake and alive to God.

Facilitator: Nicki Verploegen, Ph.D. is originally from Mon-tana. She earned her doctorate in spirituality from Du-quesne University and has been accompanying people in their spiritual journeys for over 30 years through spiritual direction, retreat work, and teaching in graduate programs

around the United States. As a co-founder of TATENDA International, she travels to Africa and Asia frequently to offer retreats to caregiv-ers, who work in trying situations. Her desire is to encourage a cycle of gratitude between peoples in different parts of the world, always recognizing the Holy in each person, place, and thing.

CATHERINE OF SIENA FEAST DAY—APRIL 29 Virgin and Doctor of the Church Patroness of Fire Prevention

The Passion of Jesus Christ was the passion of St. Catherine of Siena. She meditated on Jesus's sufferings,

death, and resurrection intently. She thus experienced a union with Christ so deep that it could only be called a spiritual marriage. Fasting fueled her religious fervor. In one vision she received communion from Christ himself.

Born in 1347 among the last of her parents’ 25 children, she devoted herself to prayer and service. As a teenager she became a Dominican Tertiary — living at home with her family, but wearing the habit of a nun. Although she provided hands-on assistance to the poor and the sick, she became a correspondent with kings, queens, and popes. Hundreds of her letters survive.

For nearly 100 years the popes had been living in Avi-gnon, France, but others claiming to be pope took up resi-dence in Rome. In 1376 Catherine traveled to Avignon to convince Pope Gregory XI to leave and return to Italy, where the schism gradually came to an end. A statue of her resolute face stops pilgrims on their way to St. Peter's Basilica today.

Catherine died in 1380 on April 29, the day on which the entire church still celebrates her memory. Her body lies beneath the altar of Rome's Dominican church, Santa Maria sopra Minerva, though her separated head was re-turned to Siena. In 1970 she was proclaimed a doctor of the church.

The collect for her Mass acknowledges the fire of divine love that inspired Catherine in her mystical marriage with Christ. It prays that God's faithful people may exult in the revelation of the glory of Christ. His Passion can become our passion as well.

At our last class, the theme was "flowers” to be painted abstractly with watercolor and patterns were added with black sharpie markers. As you can see in the photo, we all painted how we wanted, real or abstract, with patterns or not. One participant chose to paint portraits. In this class, everyone learns a certain art technique but all can have fun choosing their own theme.

We also had new students join us and artist, Glenn Cavalli, would like to

teach us how to draw buildings in perspec-
