PALM SUNDAY OF THE LORD’S PASSION – DOMINGO DE RAMOS DE LA PASION DEL SEÑOR 3/25/18

Jesus, the Suffering Servant - Today’s First Reading is from the third song of the Suffering Servant. The Suf-fering Servant brings consolation to others while enduring great suffering himself. Jesus considered Himself to be the fulfillment of this Suffering Servant prophecy. Despite his anguish, the Servant remains obedient to God’s will, trusting in His deliverance… the Resurrection on Easter. The Responsorial, Psalm 22, is a lamentation describing sufferings hauntingly similar to those Jesus would endure. Its last verse professes trust that God will deliver him. This is the psalm Jesus quoted from the cross. Typical of all lamentations, it begins with an appeal, lists sufferings being endured and ends with praise, declaring faith in eventual deliverance. It is awe-inspiring to see how this psalmist was so powerfully inspired by the Holy Spirit, hundreds of years before Christ. The Second Reading is an example of Jesus’ profound humility. It is also a teaching on emptying oneself, in the sense of spiritual surrender and humility. The ultimate degree of humility is obedience, even to death on a cross. This might seem too humiliat-ing, but Jesus saw it as the fullest expression of His love and trust in the Father. Today’s Gospel is the annual Palm Sunday account of the Lord’s Passion; His journey to, and death on, the cross. Since the Jews had no authority to put people to death, the Jewish leaders wanted Pilate to do their dirty work. Pilate really did not want to put Jesus to death, but succumbed to crowd pressure. As a preliminary to crucifixion, Jesus was scourged and further tortured by the guards. They took Jesus to Golgotha, the place of the Skull (since the outcrop of rock in that quarry resem-bled the shape of a skull). The stone in which the cross was placed had been left behind because it contained a flaw. Therefore, the stone rejected by the builders had become the corner-stone. Jesus, the Suffering Servant, having

come to bring us redemption from sin, prays aloud the Psalm 22 while dying for us on the cross. He expires and darkness covers the earth for three hours (noon ‘til three). The Ro-man centurion proclaims Him as not just a hero, but also the only-begotten Son of God, the Son of God. El Salmo Responsorial 22, es una lamentación que describe sufrimientos pare-cidos a los que llevara Jesús. Su último verso profesa confianza en que Dios lo liberará. Éste es el salmo que Jesús cita en la cruz. Típico de todas las lamentaciones, comienza con una apelación, listas de sufrimientos que se están viviendo y termina en alabanzas, declarando la fe en la segura liberación. Es inspirante ver como el salmista fue tan poderosamente inspirado por el Espíritu Santo cientos de años antes de Cristo. La Segunda Lectura, es un ejemplo de la profunda humildad de Jesús. También es una enseñanza de cómo vaciarse a sí mismo, en el sentido de un ren-dimiento espiritual y de humildad. El grado máximo de humildad es obediencia, hasta la muerte en la cruz. Esto puede parecer muy humillante, pero Jesús lo vio como la expresión más plena de Su amor y fe en el Padre. El Evan-gelio de Hoy es el recuento anual del Domingo de Ramos de la Pasión del Señor; Su peregrinaje a, y muerte en, la cruz. Ya que los judíos no tenían autoridad de poner a muerte a la gente, los líderes judíos querían que Pilatos hicie-ra su trabajo sucio. Pilatos realmente no quería mandar a Jesús a su muerte, pero cayó bajo la presión de la multitud. Como una crucifixión preliminar, Jesús fue azotado y torturado por los guardias. Llevaron a Jesús a la Gólgota, el lugar de la Calavera (ya que la pierda tenía la forma de un cráneo). La piedra en la que la cruz fue puesta fue de-jada porque tenía un defecto. Confessions – During Holy Week, we will have confessions available on Monday March 26 and Tuesday March 27 from

5:30 to 6:30 p.m. If you have been reluctant to come to the sacrament, have been away for some time, or just find it diffi-

cult to get to a Saturday afternoon confession time, this is a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with Christ and his Church.

World Day of Prayer for Vocations will be observed on Sunday, Apr il 22nd, also known as " Good Shepherd Sun-day." The purpose of this day is to publically fulfill the Lord's instruction to, "Pray the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into his harvest" (Mt 9:38; Lk 10:2). Please pray that young men and women hear and respond generously to the Lord's call
