Happy Mother's Day! We celebrate Mother's Day in the month of May, which is also known as the Month of Mary. This year, May 13, marks a special event: the 100th anniversary of the appearance of Mary in Fatima, Portugal. Revealing herself as Our Lady of the Rosary, she asked for prayers to her Immaculate Heart, for conversion and penance. Penance and conversion do not have as their aim dour Christians, ringing their hands constantly at their own sinfulness and hopelessness in the world. I am not sure whose message it is, but it's certainly not our inheritance as followers of Jesus. I share with you the following quote from Saint John Paul II in his reflection on a Wednesday audience in 2004 (re-quoting what he shared in March 1984, when he entrusted all humanity to the Immaculate Heart of Mary in response to Fatima):

“Mother of Christ, let there be revealed, once more, in the history of the world the infinite saving power of the Redemption: the power of merciful Love! May it put a stop to evil! May it transform consciences! May your Immaculate Heart reveal for all the light of hope!”

Conversion and penance are a response to God's mercy. And mercy results in joy! The following is from Pope Francis, the opening paragraph from the encyclical, The Joy of the Gospel, paragraph 1:

The mother heart of Mary is one filled with joy (cf. the Magnificat), and as our Mother, her example and presence lead us to the joy of the merciful heart of the Father, through her Son. Let us, as the Cathedral of Saint Mary, point our expectation to the Lord's joy, made new each day in us.

Padre Tim
