    1. INTRODUCTION:

The Limestone and Dolomite are the carbonate rocksthat are mainly used for cement manufacture andmetallurgical purposes with other allied uses of calcinations, flux, refractory bricks, dimension stones etc. based on thegrade. These sedimentary rocks are precipitated in identicalenvironment to form widespread and continuous deposits.

Limestone comprises of high calcium carbonate, whileDolomite is a carbonate of Ca and Mg. Limestone is thenaturally occurring mineral resource.

The state of Gujarat is well known for the occurrence ofvast resources of limestone deposits. Most notable and

accessible among these are the chain of limestone depositsoccurring all along the coastal tract of Saurashtra region, inthe districts of Bhavnagar, Amreli and Junagadh. Suchdeposits are located in Vadnagar, Solaj, Pethawada, Arnej,Sindhaj, Ghatwad, Sugala, Jagatiya and Harmatiya, villagesof Kodinar tehsil and also in the nearby villages of

Sutrapada and Veraval tehsils of Junagadh district.

The coastal region of Gujarat stretching from Kutch toBhavnagar District contains large deposits of limestones, which are geologically known as Miliolite.

There are two distinct facies of deposits viz-one ismarine organic occurring further away from the sea and the

other consisting mainly of aeolian or wind-born sandoccurring occuring in the coastal part.

However, the formation of this miliolitic limestone is adisputed point. According to one theory, it is thought to beof marine origin, while according to another, it is thought to

    be of aeolian origin.

    2. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

Review of literature on the Miliolitic Limestone clearly

shows that, though lot of work has been carried out on the

depositional environment, Geochemistry and Genesis of

Miliolitic limestone on other parts of the world and in

different parts of India, very little work has been carried outon the Miliolitic limestone of Junagadh district of Gujarat.

Therefore, study of petrography, Geochemistry and Genesis of

Miliolitic Limestone is the part of the present study.

    3. STUDY AREA

Kodinar is a tehsil township located on the Veraval Una section of the

State coastal highway No. 6 which shall essentially be a part of the

West Coast National Highway. Kodinar is a meter guage rail terminus,

forming Kodinar- Talala section of the Western Railway. It covers an

area of around 520 sq. Kms. Ambuja Cements Ltd. has been quarrying

limestone from the same area since last two decades for the productionof cement, and the study area would be comprising of captive mines of

Ambuja Cements Ltd. and outcrops exposed in and around the mining

    area.

Latitude and Longitude of the study area:

    20 47' 25" N / 70 42' 11" E

    4. PLAN OF WORK

Literature survey of Miliolitic Limestone of India & other parts of theworld.

The work includes geological mapping in and around Kodinar covering

    parts of toposheet numbers 41L/09.

Rocks sampling for mineralogical, petrological, geochemical & other

studies. Detail mineralogical / petrological studies of the Miliolitic Limestone

and country rocks supported by microscopic studies, XRD, SEM and

    other instrumental techniques.

Major, trace and REE determinations by conventional wet chemical

techniques and advance instrumental techniques (AAS, XRF, ICP-AES,INAA etc) will be employed for studying the nature of source rock,

conditions of deposition and tectonic setting.

Statistical studies will also be carried out for miliolitic limestone

    modeling.

On the basis of above studies genetic model will be evolved for the

Miliolitic Limestone of the present area.
