Having read the struggles and nobles efforts of several western
educationists, now I would turn our attention to some of the eastern
educationists. In the context of this, only the background and
contributions of two such personalities will be presented, namely
HAMKA and Lao Tze.
1.0) HAMKA (Haji Abdul Mallik Karim Amrullah) (1908-1981)
Background
y He born in 1908 in Kampung Molek, Maninjau, West Sumtera.
y He got involved in teaching a religious teacher in Perkebunan Tebing
Tinggi and Padang Panjang two years later.
y After that, he assumed the post of dosen in Universitas Panjang andUniversitas Muhammadiyah from 1957 until 1958.
y HAMKA was a Rector in Perguruan Tinggi Islam and a Professor at the
Universitas Mustopo, Jakarta.
y He died in 1981 in Jakarta.

Contributions:
he is recognized as a prominent Indonesia theologian and scholar.
HAMKA was a journalist, writer, editor and publisher. Since 1920s, he was
already a journalist for several dailies such as Pelita Andalas, Seruan
Muhammadiyah, Bintang Islam and Seruan Islam.
Some of his famous works include the following:
I. Taksir al-Azhar consisting of five volumes.II. creative works like novels and short stories. Some of his novels are
Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck, Di Bawah Lindungang Kaabah and
Merantau ke Deli which have become the texts in Malaysia and
Singapore.
HAMKA was bestowed two honorary awards, that is Doktor Honoris Causa
from Universiti al-Azhar (1958) and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (1974).
Moreover, he also was given the title Datuk Indono and Pangeran
Wiroguno from the Indonesian Government.

2.0) Lao Tze (604- 521 BC)
Background
He was a Chinese philosopher as well as the founder of Taoist religion inChina. Lao Tze means Great Teacher or Old Master
He born in 570 B.C. in Luoyang, the former capital of ancient China.
According to history, Lao Tze was appointed as a Keeper of the Imperial
Archives by Emperor Zhou in Luoyang.
With the numerous books at his disposal, he wasted no time in reading allof the classic books. In the end, he became such a widely-read and
knowledgeable person. The situation in Luoyang become unsafe for LaoTse,
therefore he decided to leave the town on a bull and heading to west.
As Lao Tze arrived at Han Gu Pass, he was stopped by a security guard. Then
he has asked Lao Tze to share his wisdom and knowledgeable. Then, he gotdown from the bull and wrote about 5,000 words.
His master piece work, Tao Te Ching was create.

Contributions
Based on Lao Tze reading, he concluded that the world is made up of sky,
earth, human beings and principles which he called dao . According to him, everything in this world is regulated by natural laws.
Hence, we have concept like poor and rich, life and death, and beautiful and
ugly.
The Tao Te Ching contains the teaching of Lao Tze.
It covers certain areas such as individual spirituality and interpersonaldynamics to political techniques. Besides, it also stresses the changes to how
human beings do something and they do not do.

Zaba (1895-1973)
Background
Zaba or his full name is, Zainal Abidin bin Ahmad was born in 1895 in BukitKampung Kerdas, Jempol, Kuala Pilah. He received his formal and religious
education in Malay school in Linggi.
Then, he further his studies at St Pauls Institution. The following year, he
taught at the English College in Johor Bharu as a Malay teacher.
By beginning of 1923, he was working as a translator in the FederatedStates and Federated ofMalaya Education Office in Kuala Lumpur. A year
later, he became a lecturer at the Sultan Idris Teachers Training College but
also a translator.
in 1939, he was transferred to the Information Department in Singapore.
Three years later, he left for overseas to work in School of Oriental andAfrican Studies, University of London.
Zaba then partner with Royal Professor Ungku Aziz to form students
language body, and two years later, the formation of Persekutuan Bahasa
Melayu, University Malaya.

Contributions
1. Zaba was a linguist who contributed to the development of the Malaylanguage.
2. Zaba was also a school curriculum planner as well as textbook writer for
schools in Malaya and Sumatera during the Japanese era.
3. He was also active in community service.
4. In 1946, he was appointed as a committee member responsible forformulating the UMNO charter at Congress to oppose the Malayan
Union.
