país GRAVEDAD Premiered: 23rd of July of 2016 in Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City.

Produced by: National Coordination of Dance from the National Institute of Fine Arts and Cuatro X Cuatro.

Length of the show: 60 minutes.

SYNOPSIS

Cuatro X Cuatro emerged ten years ago from an artistic and a�ective place. Since the beginning we questioned our practice with what we observed inside and outside of our country and inside and outside of the stage. We are admirers of Tarkovsky, and after ten years we understand, with more urgency and vitality than ever, the necessity of art,

choreography and contemporary scenic arts to broaden the field of possibility in a world where almost everything is written by the capitalism.

país GRAVEDAD exposes urgencies of our context; welcomes the body, space and silence; awakening thresholds of perception and by creating community. Disposes the body and space in a multidirectional dialogue taking gravity as a starting point. Abstracts tensions from our context and exposes lines, vibrations, frequencies and energies.

This choreographic piece is an organization of the sensible; is a stand before the capitalism; it’s a urgency, it’s a homage, is the abstraction of a million tears; lines that share, produce, separate, brings the world and us together. This piece looks for the capacity of altering coordinates in the shared world; thru actions from the body.

This piece should have been produced by my sister Nadia, but Mexico didn’t allow her; the violence and sometimiento that we drag since the beginning of this nation did not allow it; this piece should have been photographed by Ruben, Rubencito and Rubencillo but their bodies and his camera were destroyed. This piece is about the body as main subject in a country where they disappear bodies; talks about the urgency of welcoming the silence in a country with a lot of noise; speaks about the urgency of welcoming the a�ective space, the nothing, the empty space, the utility of the useless; stands up for the individual body and the community body, defends the body as and autonomous

thinking entity, defends dance as right and left in a country and a world where there are no rights or left wing politics.

This work is for my sister Nadia, for her thought, for her voice, for her imagination and for her body. It is also for all those who dare to imagine other possibilities in a country, in a continent and in a world like the one we live in.

Cuatro X Cuatro is a laboratory for art ists and creat ive people who merged in 2007 in the c i ty of Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico. The group develops processes of creat ion and exper i-mentat ion from the construct ion and decons-truct ion of personal concepts and tools that come from mult ip le spaces , d isc ip l ines and contexts . Cuatro X Cuatro has committed, s ince i ts beginnings, to the process of research, exper imentat ion and integrat ion in the performing arts , in addit ion to the mana-gement process for new spaces for contem-porary dance in Mexico. S ince i ts incept ion, Cuatro X Cuatro has integrated dramaturgy, choreography, physical i ty, speech, phi loso-phy, exper imentat ion, architecture, color, sound, p leasure, photography and interven-t ion in every creat ive process . They form one dynamic unit where the body and the act ion are the center of creat ion in the laboratory of thought into act ion. “EL CUERPO VACÍO”, d irected by Shant í Vera , detonated the crea-t ion of d i�erent works , events , insta l lat ions and performing col laborat ions with other projects , groups and companies , and develo-ped a comprehensive dia logue between con-temporary dance and other d isc ip l ines .

Cuatro X Cuatro has premiered and presented i ts works in mult ip le spaces and fest ivals in Mexico, such as the Palacio de Bel las Artes , the V Meet ing of Performing Arts FONCA within the 39th Internat ional Fest ival Cervan-t ino, the FMX 25 Fest ival of Mexico City in the Histor ic Center, the XX Internat ional Fest ival Oc-Oht ic and the 2011 INBA-UAM Award in addit ion to prest ig ious nat ional and interna-t ional cultura l venues, fest ivals and meet ings in Mexico, Spain , France, Czech Republ ic , Ger-many, I ta ly, Sweden, Poland, Panama, Colom-bia , L i thuania , Northern I re land, Belarus and Costa Rica .

Cuatro X Cuatro and i ts members have recei-ved numerous awards, incent ives , scholars-hips and inst i tut ional and organizat ional support such as FONCA, IVEC, CENART; IBE-RESCENA; INBA-UAM; CEPRODAC, CND-INBA, NO BALLET-DE; RED CQD-UE; Fest ival Yuca-tán Escénica and Internat ional Fest ival Oc-Oht ic .

S ince 2009 they have organized Fest ival 4x4, a space for reflect ion, research, promotion,

educat ion and exhibit ion of contemporary performing arts through working with mult i -p le organizat ions in Mexico and abroad. Nadia Vera produced the Fest ival 4x4 from 2009- 2015.

Current ly, Cuatro X Cuatro col laborates with di�erent Mexican performing arts organiza-t ions , such as Crónico, Ampl io Espectro, Ma-remoto Producciones, La Santa Culpa, Arte Nómada, Moving Borders , Colect ivo AM, Stéphanie Janaina, Proyecto a l Margen, Técni-cas de Movimiento, SóloDos (España) and Tres Hermanos (Costa Rica) .

Shant í is d irector of the company Cuatro X Cuatro and of the Internat ional Fest ival Cuatro X Cuatro, both of which focus on expe-r imentat ion, research, promotion and exhibi-t ion of contemporary performing arts . S ince 2009, he has developed Cuerpo Vacío (Empty body) , a laboratory of putt ing thought into act ion, exper iencing and playing from mult i -p le areas of knowledge for the stage, and focusing on the body, the thought , the space and the stage. IT uses maps on the v is ib le and the speakable ; maps of the invis ib le and the unspeakable ; thresholds of percept ion and sensibi l i ty ; physical i ty, body playwrit ing, improvisat ion, rh izomatic th inking; aesthet ics pol ic ies , the speech, the phi losophy, the pho-tography and the Mexican-Lat in American context .

Dur ing his career he has worked as a perfor-mer, d i rector, choreographer and teacher, part ic ipat ing in nat ional and internat ional meet ings , presentat ions , res idencies , tours and fest ivals in Mexico, Guatemala , Chi le, Costa Rica , Panama, Colombia , I ta ly, Ger-many, France, Poland, Sweden, Czech Repu-

bl ic , I re land, Belarus , L i thuania and Spain . The Mexican press named Shant í Vera as “one of the youngest emerging creators , choreo-graphers and dancers most representat ive of Mexico” in 2012 (Reforma newspaper) and in 2014 as “one of the future creators of memo-rable works for the Mexican scene" (El Univer-sal newspaper) . He has col laborated with Mexican theatre magazine PASO DE GATO and the Mexican dance magazine FLUIR.

Shant i Vera graduated with a degree in Con-temporary Dance, inc luding a specia l ment ion by the Facultad de Danza Contemporanea, f rom the Univers idad Veracruzana (2008). His works inc lude: HAIKU 8 descomposic ión en rojo (2010) , INACABADO V4 (2011) , IMPOSSI-BLE (2012) , HABITANTE (2014) , EL REPARTO DE LO SENSIBLE (2015) , país GRAVEDAD (2016) y EL CUERPO VACÍO (2016) . He has received several specia l ment ions , awards and incent ives from inst i tut ions and fest ivals such as FONCA, IVEC, IEJ-Chiapas, Univers idad Ve-racruzana, Fest ival Yucatan Escenica , Red Ciudades que Danzan-UE, CEPRODAC, INBA, CENART and IBERESCENA.

In July 2016 he successful ly premiered the work “país GRAVEDAD” at the Palacio de Bel las Artes in Mexico City, which commemo-rated nine years of choreographic work of the company Cuatro X Cuatro. The Nat ional Coor-dinat ion of Dance of Nat ional Inst i tute of F ine Arts produced i t . In September 2017 i t was performed in the fest ival “ZGZ Escena” in Zaragoza, Spain .

In March 2017 h is p iece “HABITANTE” was performed in the Fest ival Kontext Mexiko in Kampnagel Arts Center in Hamburg, Germany. The press sa id that Cuatro X Cuatro was the “Highl ight” of the whole fest ival .

In May 2017 he premieres the piece “THE EMPTY BODY” commemorat ing the 10th anni-versary of choreographic invest igat ion of the project Cuatro X Cuatro; the empty body is a phi losophical work that acts and th inks from mult ip le bodies- mult ip le present and mult i -p le absent- f rom al l the bodies .
